15 Acclaimed Video Games That Do Not Hold Up Today

1-15

Praised then, painful now.

Crash Bandicoot

15. Crash Bandicoot (1996)

Crash Bandicoot looked incredible in 1996, mostly because it proved the PS1 could render a 3D character without falling apart. That technical flex is the whole legacy at this point. The camera sits directly behind Crash on narrow paths, so every jump becomes a guessing game about depth you can't actually judge. Toss in save points that force you to collect crystals just to record progress, and the whole thing feels more like a tech demo than a game people willingly replay. | © Sony Interactive Entertainment

Tomb Raider

14. Tomb Raider (1996)

Tomb Raider put Lara Croft on the map, but going back to those tank controls feels like wrestling a shopping cart down a staircase. Every jump requires stopping, lining up at a perfect angle, then praying the camera does not swing behind a wall mid-leap. The block puzzles that once felt clever now just eat time, since precision movement was never this engine's strength. Fans remember the exploration, but nobody misses navigating Lara through a doorway one pixel at a time. | © Eidos Interactive

Golden Eye 007

13. GoldenEye 007 (1997)

GoldenEye 007 basically invented console shooters, but going back to it now feels like wrestling with a joystick underwater. The auto-aim is generous in some spots and completely useless in others, and stealth missions like the facility level punish you for enemy AI that barely reacts until it's too late. Split-screen multiplayer still has charm because chaos with three friends never really gets old. Everything else, from the frame rate chugging in bigger rooms to controls that need a diagram to explain, feels like a museum piece now. | © Nintendo

Cropped Bastila Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2003

12. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (2003)

Knights of the Old Republic gave players one of the best twists in gaming, but getting there means slogging through Taris for hours. The combat is basically D20 tabletop rules dressed up as real time, so half your screen time is watching characters whiff attacks based on hidden dice rolls. Menus eat up huge chunks of playtime, and the pathing gets characters stuck on geometry constantly. The story still lands, but the mechanics around it feel like homework now. | © LucasArts

Metal Gear Solid

11. Metal Gear Solid (1998)

Metal Gear Solid asked players to sneak around guards using a camera angle that made sneaking nearly impossible. Hideo Kojima's dialogue runs long, with codec conversations that stop the game cold for minutes at a time. The tank controls turn basic movement into a chore, especially during any fight that needs quick reflexes. Psycho Mantis reading your memory card is still a great trick, but it's surrounded by mechanics that fought against the player constantly. | © Konami

Cropped The Elder Scrolls III Morrowind

10. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (2002)

Morrowind still gets treated like the golden age of open world RPGs, but booting it up now is rough. You can swing a sword directly into an enemy's face and the game just says "miss" because of a hidden dice roll, which feels insane in real time combat. The menus are a maze of tiny text and stat screens that nobody under thirty has the patience for anymore. Vvardenfell is still a wild, alien place to explore, but the systems holding it together have not aged nearly as well as the world design. | © Bethesda Softworks

Fallout 3

9. Fallout 3 (2008)

The Capital Wasteland felt huge in 2008, but walking through it now exposes how empty that scale really was. Combat leaned on VATS because the actual gunplay was clunky and stiff, and enemies often just stood there absorbing bullets. The dialogue wheel promised choice but funneled you toward the same few outcomes anyway. Bethesda's later games fixed so much of this that going back feels like using a flip phone after years of touchscreens. | © Bethesda Softworks
Mass Effect

8. Mass Effect (2007)

The combat in Mass Effect feels like a tech demo that shipped by accident. Cover mechanics glitch out constantly, and the Mako's driving physics make every planet exploration section a chore. BioWare's dialogue wheel and character writing still hold up fine, but the shooting underneath it all is rough. People remember Garrus and the Citadel, not the hours spent fighting sticky cover and dumb enemy AI. | © Electronic Arts

Grand Theft Auto III

7. Grand Theft Auto III (2001)

Liberty City felt like a miracle in 2001 because nobody had walked around a living city like that before. Play it now, and the miracle wears off fast. Missions restart you across town with zero direction, the draw distance turns traffic into a guessing game, and Claude never says a word because he never got the chance. The template GTA III built still runs the industry, but the actual game underneath it hasn't aged nearly as gracefully as its influence has. | © Rockstar Games

Cropped Assassins Creed II

6. Assassin's Creed II (2009)

Ezio's early adventures get credit for saving the franchise, but booting the game up now means fighting a camera that never wants to cooperate. Combat is a button mash dressed up as swordplay, and every enemy dies the same repetitive way. The Renaissance setting still looks nice, but climbing feels sticky compared to what Ubisoft built later. Nostalgia carries this one more than the actual mechanics do. | © Ubisoft
Dead Space

5. Dead Space (2008)

Dead Space made zero gravity feel like a genuine threat, but going back to it now exposes how clunky that tech actually was. The strafing feels stiff, the inventory menus freeze you in real time in ways that break tension instead of building it, and backtracking through the Ishimura gets repetitive fast. Necromorphs stop being scary once you realize dismemberment is basically the only puzzle the game has. The 2023 remake fixed so many of these issues that it quietly proved the original was coasting on atmosphere alone. | © Electronic Arts

Half Life

4. Half-Life (1998)

Half-Life sold the world on scripted sequences and physics-driven storytelling, but the shine wears off fast once you're back in Black Mesa today. Gordon Freeman never speaks, sure, but the silence gets exposed by combat that's mostly hitscan soldiers unloading on you from across a hallway. The Xen section near the end still gets brought up as one of gaming's most tedious closers, full of floaty jumps and enemy spam. It changed the industry, but playing it now feels more like homework than fun. | © Valve

Resident Evil

3. Resident Evil (1996)

Resident Evil practically invented the survival horror genre, but going back to that Spencer Mansion now feels like wading through wet cement. The tank controls turn every zombie encounter into a fumbling mess, and the voice acting gives you lines so wooden they became internet legend on their own. Fixed camera angles that once built tension now just hide enemies in ways that feel cheap instead of scary. It changed gaming forever, but the actual playing experience aged worse than almost anything else on this list. | © Capcom

Cropped The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 1998

2. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998)

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time carried the greatest game ever made label for over a decade. Playing it now exposes some rough edges fast. The camera fights you at every turn, and Navi never stops yelling the same three lines. Then the Water Temple shows up and turns into a boot-swapping chore that kills all momentum. | © Nintendo

Final Fantasy VII

1. Final Fantasy VII (1997)

Final Fantasy VII in 1997 blew people away with pre-rendered backgrounds and a plot twist nobody saw coming. Going back now, those same backgrounds make the blocky, triangle-headed character models look worse by comparison. The battle system asks you to grind through random encounters constantly, and the original translation has lines that barely make sense. Remake exists for a reason, because the original plays like a museum piece you have to squint through. | © Square Enix

Some games earned rave reviews and awards in their heyday, only for clunky controls, dated design, or aged visuals to make them a chore to revisit. What felt revolutionary back then can feel downright rough now. Here are 15 acclaimed video games that don't hold up today.
