15 Best Open World Games Most People Never Finished

1-15

Too big to beat.

Star Wars Outlaws

15. Star Wars Outlaws

Star Wars Outlaws puts you in the boots of a low-level criminal instead of a Jedi, which sounded refreshing on paper. Kay Vess spends her time scraping together jobs, dodging syndicates, and slowly building a reputation across a handful of planets. The problem is the stealth sections and forced failure states that punish you for playing your own way. A lot of players got through the opening hours and just drifted off before ever seeing the bigger heists pay off. | © Ubisoft

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

14. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth turns Midgar's aftermath into a sprawling map stuffed with card games, chocobo races, and side quests for every single party member. Chadley's tower scanning alone can eat up dozens of hours before the main story even moves forward. The combat and the character moments still land, but the sheer volume of busywork wore a lot of players down long before the ending. Plenty of fans adored the first thirty hours and then quietly wandered off into a Gold Saucer minigame and never came back. | © Square Enix

Xenoblade Chronicles 3

13. Xenoblade Chronicles 3

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 throws players into a world split between two nations locked in a war that eats people's lifespans for fuel. The combat system alone takes hours to fully click, layering classes, arts, and chain attacks into something closer to a spreadsheet than a button masher. Add in a story that stretches past 70 hours before the credits roll, and plenty of players simply lost momentum somewhere around chapter five. The side quests pile up fast too, and most people who wandered off never found their way back to Aionios. | © Nintendo

S T A L K E R 2 Heart of Chornobyl

12. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 drops you into the Zone with a gun that jams, a body that needs food, and mutants that do not care about your survival instincts. GSC Game World spent years rebuilding this thing through an actual war in their own country, and that history bleeds into every irradiated corner of the map. The bugs at launch were rough, crashes and broken quests included, but the atmosphere underneath was never in question. Most players got swallowed by the anomalies and side paths long before they saw where the main story actually goes. | © GSC Game World

Dying Light 2 Stay Human

11. Dying Light 2 Stay Human

Dying Light 2 Stay Human hands you a whole city built for parkour, then buries it under a story nobody asked for. The climbing and combat still feel great, especially once you get the grapple hook and paraglider late game. The problem is, getting there means slogging through faction quests and a dialogue system that pretends your choices matter more than they actually do. Most players had their fill of rooftop running long before the credits rolled. | © Techland

Dragons dogma 2

10. Dragon's Dogma 2 (2024)

Dragon's Dogma 2 asks you to hike everywhere on foot, and it means it. Fast travel is deliberately limited, so most trips turn into monster encounters, weird side quests, or your pawns chattering about loot. That commitment to friction is exactly why so many players bounced off it after the initial climb up from the starting town. The game rewards patience most open-world titles never even ask for. | © Capcom

Fallout 4

9. Fallout 4

Fallout 4 hands you a fully voiced protagonist, a kid to find, and a wasteland that could not care less about your urgency. Settlement building turns into its own addiction, with players dumping forty hours into Sanctuary before touching the main quest. Then the crafting system swallows people whole, scrapping junk for mods and building bigger bases nobody needed. The Institute storyline sits there waiting, sometimes for years, while Preston Garvey hands out one more settlement to save. | © Bethesda Softworks

Elden Ring

8. Elden Ring

Elden Ring hands you an entire continent and refuses to explain almost any of it. That openness is exactly why so many players stall out somewhere between Limgrave and Leyndell, buried under optional bosses they wandered into by accident. The game never gates progress behind a map marker, so plenty of people just keep exploring instead of pushing toward the ending. Malenia alone has ended more save files than any actual story choice ever could. | © Bandai Namco

Starfield

7. Starfield

Starfield hands you a thousand planets and somehow makes that number feel like a punishment instead of a gift. So many of those worlds turn out empty, filled with the same copy-pasted outposts and rock formations no matter which star system you jump to. Bethesda built a universe so big that the main story gets lost in menus, loading screens, and fast travel between samey locations. People loved the character creator and the ship building, then quietly drifted away long before reaching the Unity. | © Bethesda Softworks

Death Stranding

6. Death Stranding

Death Stranding asks you to play a delivery driver crossing a broken America, and that pitch alone sent half its audience running. The first several hours are just walking, balancing cargo, and trying not to trip on rocks, with barely any combat to break it up. People who pushed through found a weird, sincere story about connection hiding under all that hiking simulator surface. Most players just saw a UPS job with extra steps and never opened the second map. | © Sony Interactive Entertainment / 505 Games

Assassins Creed Valhalla

5. Assassin's Creed Valhalla

Assassin's Creed Valhalla drops Eivor into a Viking saga that stretches across England, Norway, and eventually France. The map keeps growing long after most players expect the credits to roll, with entire regions like Ireland and Vinland tucked away as side content. Raiding monasteries and building up a settlement feels great for the first thirty hours, then the game keeps adding more of the same systems on top. People fall in love with the setting and just run out of steam before Eivor's story wraps up. | © Ubisoft

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt

4. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The Witcher 3 has a main story that wraps up in maybe sixty hours, but almost nobody stops there. Blood and Wine alone is basically a full game bolted onto the ending, and Gwent turns into its own side obsession for a huge chunk of players. People get distracted chasing every question mark on the map long before they reach Skellige, let alone the final choice for Ciri. The game rewards wandering so much that finishing it starts to feel optional. | © CD Projekt

Red Dead Redemption 2

3. Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 asks for patience before it gives you anything resembling fun, and that trade-off breaks a lot of players early on. The opening hours bury you in slow horse rides, snow trudging, and camp chores that feel more like a chore list than an adventure. Arthur Morgan's story only really lands once you push past that crawl, which means plenty of people quit right as the game starts becoming something special. The tragedy is that the back half contains some of the best written material in gaming, sitting there unfinished on countless hard drives. | © Rockstar Games

Cyberpunk 2077

2. Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 launched in 2020 with so many bugs that Sony pulled it from the PlayStation Store entirely. Night City looked incredible, but players kept hitting crashes, broken quests, and NPCs that stopped functioning mid-mission. A lot of people quit early just to wait for patches that took years to arrive. By the time the game actually worked the way it was supposed to, plenty of players had already moved on and never went back to finish V's story. | © CD Projekt

Far Cry 6

1. Far Cry 6

Far Cry 6 hands you a whole tropical dictatorship to topple, complete with Giancarlo Esposito chewing scenery as the villain. The problem is that Yara starts feeling like every other Far Cry map about twenty hours in. Camps to clear, towers to climb, guerrilla fighters to recruit, all dressed up in a new coat of paint. Most players torched a few outposts, admired Esposito's performance, then wandered off before the revolution ever finished. | © Ubisoft

1-15

Open-world games love to hand you a massive map, a hundred side quests, and endless distractions, and somewhere in all that freedom, plenty of players quietly drift away before the ending. It's not that these games are bad, they're often too big and too full for their own good. Here are 15 great open-world games most people never finished.
