Fallout 4: How To Remove The Next-Gen Update

With the highly successful Fallout show on Amazon Prime Video (are you ready for season 2? 'Cause I sure am!), the games experience a real revival at the moment. New players joined the community because of the show and old fans were inspired to pick up the game once more to roam the Wastelands.

For a better experience of the game, Bethesda then rolled out the next-gen update with improved graphics, but in true Bethesda fashion, it was quickly becoming very clear that the update wasn't all that optimized. There were annoying bugs, the game crashed frequently for many players and, the worst of all, mods for the game stopped working.

Thankfully, there's an easy fix to the whole disaster. Here's how to remove the next-gen update.

Removing The Next-Gen Update For Fallout 4 Allows You To Use Your Mods Again

Modders are obviously working on their creations to work with the new update as well, but if your favorite mod still isn't working, you might miss out on your favorite playstyle. For many players that ruins the fun or whole playthroughs that relied on mods in the past.

But the Fallout mod community has already fixed the problem – in a way at least. How, you may ask? Well, with mods, of course!

First up, there's the "Steam – Skip Next-Gen Update." If you haven't already updated the game, this mod prevents Steam from annoying you with the update altogether. If you initially thought "How bad can it be?" and updated Fallout 4, you might want to take a look at the "Fallout 4 Downgrader" mod which brings you back to the already beaten paths and removes the improvements from the updates.

Your old mods should work just fine with them, again. If you play on console, though, you'll probably have to wait for a similar project to rise until you can get back to your modded playthrough.
