15 Games People Defend More Than They Actually Enjoy

1-15

Dark Souls II

1. Dark Souls II (2014)

“Level Adaptability” sounds like helpful advice until you realize you’re upgrading how reliably a dodge avoids damage. Dark Souls II rewards understanding its peculiar rules, and Majula’s exhausted beauty deserves every admirer it gets. Still, explaining why an attack connected isn’t quite the same as enjoying the encounter. Sometimes you want to fight a knight without first consulting his insurance policy. | © FromSoftware

Cropped Death Stranding

2. Death Stranding (2019)

Finding a stranger’s ladder exactly where you need it makes Death Stranding’s ideas about cooperation wonderfully tangible. Getting there, however, might involve a lengthy negotiation between your boots, a hillside, and several precariously stacked deliveries. The labor gives those connections meaning, but meaning doesn’t automatically make every journey absorbing. Admiring Kojima’s experiment and wishing the next destination were closer are perfectly compatible feelings. | © Kojima Productions

League of Legends

3. League of Legends (2009)

A perfectly timed team fight can justify an embarrassing number of miserable evenings. That’s the bargain behind League of Legends: intricate champion matchups and coordinated plays, delivered through four teammates whose plans may bear no resemblance to yours. The strategy deserves its reputation. Whether another ranked match will improve your night is a separate question, usually answered by clicking “Play” before thinking. | © Riot Games

Destiny 2

4. Destiny 2 (2017)

Try selling a friend on Destiny 2 without eventually explaining which parts of its history Bungie removed. Content vaulting complicates an otherwise irresistible pitch: gorgeous weapons, explosive abilities, and raids that turn a group’s confusion into collective triumph. The shooting can carry an evening almost by itself. It just shouldn’t also have to carry every grievance accumulated on the way to that evening. | © Bungie

Starfield

5. Starfield (2023)

Your lovingly customized spaceship should be the beginning of an adventure, rather than its most satisfying accomplishment. Starfield’s shipbuilder gives you wonderful control over the vessel; the exploration beyond it feels much less personal when familiar facilities reappear across distant planets. There’s pleasure in inhabiting Bethesda’s space fantasy, but describing everything you can do can sound more exciting than choosing something to do next. | © Bethesda Game Studios

Dragon Age Inquisition 2014

6. Dragon Age: Inquisition (2014)

The conversation you remember from Dragon Age: Inquisition probably wasn’t about requisition supplies. BioWare’s companions give you excellent reasons to care about saving Thedas, then its sprawling quest structure keeps finding errands between you and the next meaningful exchange. Even war-table assignments can involve real-time waits. Commanding a powerful organization sounds glamorous until your fantasy adventure starts asking you to check back after the paperwork clears. | © BioWare

Cropped The Last of Us Part II

7. The Last of Us Part II (2020)

Finishing The Last of Us Part II can leave you ready for a serious discussion and absolutely uninterested in pressing “New Game.” Its shifting perspectives demand attention, while crawling through grass and improvising escapes make individual encounters fiercely engaging. The exhaustion comes from the relentless emotional pressure surrounding them. Calling that deliberate is reasonable; treating anyone who finds it draining as intellectually unqualified is less convincing. | © Naughty Dog

FINAL FANTASY XIII

8. Final Fantasy XIII (2009)

Once Final Fantasy XIII’s Paradigm system clicks, battles become brisk exercises in changing roles, building stagger, and knowing when to abandon an attack. Getting to that confidence requires a considerable stretch of restricted choices and narrow routes. Fans aren’t inventing the tactical depth; they’re remembering the payoff. Recommending the whole journey on that basis is rather like praising a restaurant while forgetting the queue outside. | © Square Enix

METAL GEAR SOLID V THE PHANTOM PAIN

9. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (2015)

Enemy soldiers adapting to your tactics is a terrific reason to praise The Phantom Pain. Its stealth systems encourage experiments that genuinely deserve another attempt, which makes the uneven campaign surrounding them especially frustrating. Chapter Two mixes new developments with harder versions of earlier missions, disrupting the momentum. You can spend hours happily testing approaches while still wishing the story gave that ingenuity a more satisfying destination. | © Kojima Productions

Assassins Creed Valhalla

10. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (2020)

England apparently cannot conduct a single awkward political transition without Eivor’s personal attendance. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla builds its campaign around regional alliances, giving local characters room to become more than quest dispensers. Across so many territories, though, that generosity starts working against the central story. “You get your money’s worth” becomes a shakier compliment when you’d happily surrender several counties to reach the next major revelation. | © Ubisoft

KINGDOM HEARTS III

11. Kingdom Hearts III (2019)

Toy-box mechs and Caribbean sailing make Kingdom Hearts III an easy game to enjoy in snapshots. Across the full adventure, however, the Disney excursions and the overarching drama struggle to keep the same appointment. Major resolutions crowd into the closing stretch after long periods of waiting. Familiar faces can make those reunions land beautifully, without making every hour spent anticipating them feel equally worthwhile. | © Square Enix

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

12. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet (2022)

Catching a new favorite shouldn’t require apologizing for the scenery juddering behind it. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet made roaming among wild Pokémon wonderfully tempting, while their original Switch performance repeatedly interrupted that pleasure. The Switch 2 update improved frame rates and image quality, so the criticism needs that context. Loving Paldea was always understandable; acting as though its rough presentation never mattered was the unnecessary part. | © Game Freak

Halo Infinite

13. Halo Infinite (2021)

The grappleshot makes a persuasive argument for Halo Infinite every time Master Chief launches himself toward trouble. Its launch package was harder to champion: Forge and online campaign co-op arrived later, leaving early enthusiasm waiting for familiar features. Those additions deserve credit, but they also expose the awkwardness of defending potential. A great combat encounter can’t retroactively supply the evenings your friends already spent playing elsewhere. | © 343 Industries

Diablo IV

14. Diablo IV (2023)

One useful drop can rescue an otherwise forgettable session of Diablo IV, which is both the attraction and the problem. Experimenting with builds gives the demon slaughter direction; hunting incremental improvements can turn it into background activity. Seasonal characters offer a fresh beginning, but enthusiasm doesn’t reset automatically alongside progression. There’s a point where anticipating the reward becomes more entertaining than earning another chance at it. | © Blizzard Entertainment

Cropped The Lich Kings Scourge World of Warcraft

15. World of Warcraft (2004)

Leaving World of Warcraft can mean leaving the place where your friends still meet. That gives every discussion about its quality an emotional complication: a mediocre session might contain an excellent conversation. Raids and character progression provide plenty of genuine satisfaction, but habit can quietly take over the schedule. Defending Azeroth sometimes means defending a social routine you value more than the activities keeping everyone occupied. | © Blizzard Entertainment

“It gets good after 30 hours” is a brave way to recommend a hobby. Ask what makes a beloved video game fun, and you can end up hearing a defense of its tedious quests, punishing grind, and everything the developers supposedly intended. We’ve all made excuses for a favorite, but these 15 games raise an awkward question: are we enjoying ourselves, or just getting better at winning the argument?
