15 TV Shows That Ruined Their Own Best Characters

1-15

They deserved better.

TV Shows & Movies - October 7th 2026, 19:00 GMT+2
Desperate Housewives Katherine Mayfair

15. Desperate Housewives — Katherine Mayfair

Katherine Mayfair showed up on Desperate Housewives as a woman who'd survived real tragedy and still had sharp edges left over. Wisteria Lane gave her a second act built on secrets, a dead daughter, and a marriage worth blowing up for something honest. Then the show got distracted by new arrivals and reduced her to a jealous rival sniping over men. A character built on grief deserved better than a subplot about who gets to keep a boyfriend. | © ABC
Beverly Hills 90210 Kelly Taylor

14. Beverly Hills, 90210 — Kelly Taylor

Nobody on Beverly Hills, 90210 went through more rewrites than Kelly Taylor. She started as the pretty mean girl, softened into the emotional center of the group, then got stuck in a love triangle that ran so long it stopped meaning anything. Her drug storyline hit hard, her later seasons did not, cycling through breakdowns just to keep her relevant. By the finale she felt less like a person and more like a plot device with good highlights. | © Fox
That 70s Show Jackie Burkhart

13. That '70s Show — Jackie Burkhart

Jackie Burkhart started out as the spoiled princess of That '70s Show, which was funny precisely because she never noticed how spoiled she was. Growing her up meant giving her flaws worth examining, a father in prison, a mother who bailed, real reasons for the armor. Instead the later seasons just made her needier, pairing her off with Fez in a swap that felt like a writer's room shrug rather than an ending. A character who used to have teeth left the show declawed. | © Fox
Roseanne Roseanne Conner

12. Roseanne — Roseanne Conner

There is no version of the Roseanne revival that fans asked for, and it starts with what happened to Roseanne Conner herself. Decades of watching her hold a broke, exhausted family together got undone by a single lottery-win retcon and a political stunt casting that overshadowed everything she used to represent. The reboot then killed her off entirely just to keep the show going without her. A character who spoke for an entire economic class got erased so the franchise could survive her. | © ABC
Two and a Half Men Charlie Harper

11. Two and a Half Men — Charlie Harper

Two seasons in, Charlie Harper had already become the whole reason to watch Two and a Half Men. His charm was the joke and the point, a man who should have been miserable but somehow made selfishness look easy. The writers kept escalating the drinking and the women until there was no version of him left to root for, just a punchline waiting to happen. Killing him off by train felt less like closure and more like the show finally admitting it had nowhere left to take him. | © CBS
Once Upon a Time Regina Mills

10. Once Upon a Time — Regina Mills

Regina Mills spent seasons earning a redemption arc that actually meant something, clawing her way from villain to someone worth rooting for. Then Once Upon a Time kept finding reasons to drag her back into evil-adjacent territory whenever the plot ran dry. Her romance with Robin Hood ate up time that should have gone to her own growth. The show built a genuinely complex woman, then treated every relapse like a season finale twist instead of a step backward. | © ABC
lisa cuddy

9. House — Lisa Cuddy

Fifteen years of running a hospital, and Lisa Cuddy still got reduced to the woman waiting on House to grow up. House spent its middle seasons building her into someone who could match him argument for argument, budget line for budget line. The final stretch threw that away for a relationship plot that made her look like a hostage to his chaos. She left the show not because the story earned it, but because the writers ran out of other ways to use her. | © NBCUniversal
Joey Tribbiani

8. Friends — Joey Tribbiani

Joey Tribbiani worked as the lovable dumb guy for exactly as long as the writers kept him from actually thinking about anything. Friends leaned harder on the bit every season, until the failed actor with a good heart became a punchline generator with no inner life left. Storylines that once gave him real stakes, like his acting career or his loyalty to Chandler, got traded for jokes about food and women. The character who could have aged into something with dimension instead calcified into a catchphrase. | © Warner Bros. Television
Gossip Girl Serena van der Woodsen

7. Gossip Girl — Serena van der Woodsen

Nobody needed Serena van der Woodsen to be a good person, just a consistent one, and Gossip Girl couldn't commit to either. One season she's the moral center feeling guilty over old mistakes. The next she's blackmailing friends and sleeping with someone's fiancé like the show forgot her own history. By the end her chaos read less like character and more like a writers room that never agreed on who she was. | © The CW
The Walking Dead Andrea

6. The Walking Dead — Andrea

Andrea walked onto The Walking Dead as a lawyer who could out-shoot half the men around her, sharp enough to challenge the group's every decision. The back half of her run swapped that instinct for a baffling loyalty to the Governor, a man the audience already knew was a monster. Her judgment, the trait that defined her, evaporated right when the story needed her to see the obvious. She died still trying to fix a mistake the writers never should have made her make. | © AMC
Sex and the City Miranda Hobbes

5. Sex and the City — Miranda Hobbes

A lawyer sharp enough to make partner got reduced to punchlines about her hair and her love life. Sex and the City built Miranda Hobbes as the voice of reason, the one friend who called out nonsense before it started. Then the show quietly stopped writing her cases, her ambition, anything that made her more than the cynical one at brunch. By the movies she existed mainly to react to everyone else's plot. | © HBO
Gilmore Girls Rory Gilmore

4. Gilmore Girls — Rory Gilmore

Somewhere between Yale and that Season 7 finale, Rory Gilmore stopped being the girl readers rooted for. Gilmore Girls spent years selling her as brilliant and driven, a kid who read Faulkner for fun and still made curfew. The revival then handed her an affair, a jobless thirties, and a smugness that never got challenged. A character built on promise ended up coasting on her mother's charm instead of earning her own. | © The WB / The CW
How I Met Your Mother Barney Stinson

3. How I Met Your Mother — Barney Stinson

Nine seasons is a long time to keep a joke funny, and How I Met Your Mother could not do it. Barney Stinson started as a slick parody of pickup culture, self-aware enough to be tolerable. The writers kept doubling down anyway, stretching the bit until his arc became an actual redemption story nobody bought. A finale that undid his growth in minutes proved the show never knew what to do with him beyond the suit. | © CBS
Alex Karev

2. Grey's Anatomy — Alex Karev

Fifteen seasons in, longevity started working against Grey's Anatomy instead of for it. Alex Karev spent a decade earning real growth, from the hospital's worst intern to a doctor who fought for kids nobody else would. Then he vanished off screen in a text message, leaving his wife for a woman he barely spoke to in years. It is hard to think of a bigger insult to a character the show once treated as its emotional backbone. | © ABC
Daenerys Targaryen

1. Game of Thrones — Daenerys Targaryen

Eight seasons of buildup ended with a woman burning a city she came to save. Daenerys Targaryen was framed for years as the exception to tyranny, the ruler who freed slaves and broke wheels instead of turning them. Game of Thrones needed her to snap fast, so it skipped the slow unraveling that might have made Dracarys land as tragedy instead of whiplash. A show that spent years building a liberator torched her into a cautionary tale in a single episode. | © HBO
