12 Open Worlds You’d Actually Want to Live In

1-12

Crimson desert

12. Crimson Desert

Pywel makes a persuasive argument for abandoning your responsibilities and taking up fishing. Across Crimson Desert’s grasslands, forests, and busy settlements, cooking and gathering give the landscape a purpose beyond hosting the next spectacular fight. You can imagine knowing these places intimately: a favorite stretch of river, a familiar road into town, somewhere to stop before heading home. Kliff has a mercenary company to reunite, admittedly, but an afternoon off seems entirely reasonable. | © Pearl Abyss

Horizon

11. Horizon Zero Dawn (2017)

Humanity’s replacement landscaping department has done excellent work. In Horizon Zero Dawn, vegetation swallows the remains of our civilization, while animal-like machines make the wilderness feel like an extraordinary, occasionally murderous nature reserve. Meridian offers a more practical address, with its elevated architecture and bustling markets overlooking the surrounding landscape. Watching a Tallneck cross the distance would certainly improve the view from your window. Just leave the machine hunting to somebody with Aloy’s qualifications. | © Guerrilla Games

Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 1

10. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II (2025)

You could probably spend a respectable afternoon gathering herbs in Bohemia, then lose the proceeds over tavern dice. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II makes that modest existence surprisingly attractive through hands-on alchemy, blacksmithing, and settlements where your reputation matters. Trosky’s countryside supplies the rural daydream; Kuttenberg supplies the bustle when solitude wears thin. Medieval life comes with substantial drawbacks, but the game understands why learning a trade and becoming a familiar face somewhere can feel satisfying. | © Warhorse Studios

Red Dead Redemption 2

9. Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018)

A fishing rod, a good horse, and absolutely no financial arrangements with Dutch van der Linde: that’s the retirement plan. Red Dead Redemption 2 gives its frontier an unusually convincing daily rhythm, from shopkeepers tending their businesses to animals moving through the undergrowth. Around Big Valley, open meadows and wooded slopes make even an uneventful ride feel worth taking. The appeal is having enough space to spend an entire afternoon accomplishing very little. | © Rockstar Games

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt Blood and Wine

8. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015)

Our forwarding address would be Toussaint, specifically. Added in the Blood and Wine expansion, this vineyard-covered duchy trades much of the wider world’s misery for colorful gardens, elaborate chivalry, and people with strong opinions about wine. Geralt’s Corvo Bianco estate makes the fantasy tangible: you can renovate the house and give a professional wanderer somewhere to belong. There are still monsters, but at least this corner of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt offers a convincing retirement prospect. | © CD Projekt Red

Cropped Assassins Creed Origins

7. Assassin’s Creed Origins (2017)

Egypt deserves more than a hurried visit between assassinations. Along the Nile in Assassin’s Creed Origins, cultivated riverbanks and working settlements make the ancient world feel inhabited, while Alexandria offers streets you could happily spend days learning. Ubisoft even accommodated the urge to linger with Discovery Tour, which removes combat and turns exploration into a history lesson. Consider that the preferred relocation package: access to the extraordinary surroundings, with substantially fewer armed men interrupting the sightseeing. | © Ubisoft Montreal

No Mans Sky

6. No Man’s Sky (2016)

House hunting gets complicated when the next viewing is in another star system. No Man’s Sky lets you search for a planet with the right landscape, wildlife, and weather, then establish a base that makes the discovery feel personal. The universe becomes easier to appreciate once you have somewhere to return to. Choose carefully and that enormous alien sky becomes your everyday backdrop; choose badly and you’ll develop very strong feelings about the local storms. | © Hello Games

Minecraft

5. Minecraft (2011)

Don’t like the house? Knock it down. Don’t like the hill behind it? That can go too. Minecraft offers an unusually generous version of settling down, where your surroundings can gradually become whatever you need them to be. A vegetable patch, a waterfront cabin, and a railway to a friend’s place are all achievable ambitions. Creative mode removes the material constraints, while Peaceful difficulty makes domestic life considerably less vulnerable to something exploding beside the tomatoes. | © Mojang Studios

Hogwarts Legacy Pre Order

4. Hogwarts Legacy (2023)

The acceptance letter was always the real fantasy. Hogwarts Legacy understands the appeal of belonging at Hogwarts, filling its castle with intricate corridors, distinctive common rooms, and distractions that make walking to class unnecessarily lengthy. The customizable Room of Requirement adds a private retreat for growing plants and brewing potions, while Hogsmeade provides an excuse to leave the grounds. Being able to cross the surrounding countryside by broom also makes ordinary commuting look like a terrible administrative mistake. | © Avalanche Software

Breath of the wild

3. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (2017)

Hateno Village makes a stronger case for settling down than another dangerous expedition ever could. In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Link can buy and furnish a house there, giving all that wandering a welcome domestic counterweight. Beyond the village, cooking, horse riding, and the network of stables suggest a pleasantly unhurried way to travel. Hyrule remains in serious trouble, but its surviving communities offer something worth saving—and somewhere worth coming back to. | © Nintendo

Far cry 6 is beautiful v0 u3nb3gwjql191

2. Far Cry 6 (2021)

Yara would photograph beautifully in a relocation brochure, although the small print would need several extra pages. Far Cry 6 fills its fictional Caribbean island with palm-lined shores, lush inland scenery, and towns whose colorful buildings practically demand a leisurely stroll. Fishing and exploring the coast offer glimpses of the life you’d want there. Castillo’s dictatorship makes that dream painfully conditional: the attraction is imagining what this place could be if its people could finally live freely. | © Ubisoft Toronto

Skyrim

1. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (2011)

Breezehome isn’t especially grand, but after a miserable expedition through a draugr-filled ruin, that little house in Whiterun feels palatial. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim earns its homely appeal through familiar routines: selling supplies, visiting the inn, and returning to streets you know by heart. The Hearthfire add-on extends that attachment with house building and adoption. Eventually, picking ingredients beside the road can feel more urgent than fulfilling your destiny. The mountain can wait; you’re going home. | © Bethesda Game Studios

1-12

Saving the world can wait. You’ve found a lakeside village with a decent tavern, and suddenly the main quest feels like someone else’s problem. The best open-world games make you consider things the developers probably never intended, like where you’d buy a house or spend a lazy Sunday. These 12 video game worlds had us browsing imaginary property listings—even if a few would require unusually comprehensive home insurance.
