15 Retro Horror Games That Will Still Keep You Up at Night

1-15

Old scares hit different.

Rule Of Rose

15. Rule of Rose (2006)

A dog named Brown guides a girl named Jennifer through a world that looks like a children's book and feels like a slow descent into dread. Rule of Rose buries its horror in schoolyard cruelty rather than monsters, which somehow makes it worse. The combat is clunky and the camera fights you, but the orphanage flashbacks stick around long after you put the controller down. Few games have ever made childhood itself feel this unsafe. | © Atlus
The Suffering

14. The Suffering (2004)

Torque wakes up on death row with no memory of murdering his family, and the game never tells you if he actually did it. The Suffering turns a prison riot into a monster parade, but the real tension lives in the choices that shape which ending you earn. Your morality gets tracked in real time, judged by how you treat guards, inmates, and the things that used to be human. It is a horror game that never lets you off the hook with a simple good or evil label. | © Midway Games
Cropped haunting ground

13. Haunting Ground (2005)

Fiona Belli cannot fight back, and that single design choice turns Haunting Ground into a different kind of nightmare. Her dog Hewie is her only real weapon, a companion you have to train and trust while something unkillable stalks the halls of a castle. Stealth here means hiding under tables with your heart pounding, not shooting your way to safety. The helplessness is the whole point, and it works exactly because it refuses to let you feel powerful. | © Capcom
Siren

12. Siren (2003)

Thirty playable characters, a cursed village, and a mechanic called sightjacking that lets you see through the eyes of the things hunting you. Siren builds dread out of information rather than jump scares, forcing you to track enemy patrols using their own vision against them. The red water and shibito villagers gave PlayStation 2 owners a very specific kind of insomnia. It asked more patience than most horror games dared to, and it paid off every time. | © Sony Computer Entertainment
Cropped Eternal Darkness Sanitys Requiem

11. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (2002)

Alexandra Roivas investigates her grandfather's murder and uncovers a magic book spanning centuries, and that premise alone set Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem apart from everything else on GameCube. The sanity meter is the real star, messing with the television itself through fake volume changes, fake save-file deletions, and walls that bleed when nobody else can see it. No other game of its era turned the player's own trust in the hardware into a weapon. It remains one of the strangest, boldest things Nintendo ever published. | © Nintendo
System Shock 2

10. System Shock 2 (1999)

SHODAN's voice is the reason System Shock 2 still crawls under people's skin. She purrs insults while you scavenge a wrecked spaceship, low on bullets and psi points, surrounded by things that used to be the crew. The RPG systems forced real tradeoffs, so every upgrade choice felt like it mattered later. Few villains have made being talked to feel this dangerous. | © Electronic Arts
Parasite Eve

9. Parasite Eve (1998)

Manhattan burns from spontaneous combustion, and a cop named Aya Brea turns out to be the reason why. Parasite Eve mixed turn based combat with real time movement, which sounds strange on paper but felt tense in motion. The game leaned on mitochondria and opera house horror instead of zombies, which made it stand apart from everything else on PS1 that year. It played like a monster movie that happened to also be a role playing game. | © Square (Square Enix)
Fatal Frame

8. Fatal Frame (2001)

A camera that only hurts ghosts by looking at them is a strange idea, and Fatal Frame commits to it completely. You explore a mansion where every doorway might hide something that only appears through the viewfinder, and lining up the shot takes just long enough to feel unsafe. There are no guns here, only film, so every encounter is a negotiation instead of a fight. That restraint is exactly why the dread never lets up. | © Tecmo
Cropped Dino Crisis

7. Dino Crisis (1999)

Dinosaurs and survival horror sound like a strange combination until you remember Dino Crisis made it work. Regina navigates a research facility where a raptor can appear from any angle, faster and smarter than the undead ever were. Ammo stays scarce, doors stay locked, and every corridor turns into a held breath. It took the formula Capcom already owned and made it sprint. | © Capcom
Silent hill 2

6. Silent Hill 2 (2001)

Fog rolls through the streets of a town that shouldn't still be standing, and James Sunderland walks into it anyway, chasing a letter from a wife who's already dead. Silent Hill 2 uses its monsters as mirrors instead of jump scares, with Pyramid Head existing because James needs him to. The writing trusts players to sit with discomfort instead of explaining it away. Decades later, people still replay it just to feel that particular kind of sad. | © Konami
Phantasmagoria

5. Phantasmagoria (1995)

Seven CDs of full motion video, and Sierra bet the whole game on them. Phantasmagoria cast real actors in a haunted house plot about a writer slowly realizing her husband is possessed by something ancient. The murders were gory enough that parts of it got pulled in Australia. For a lot of players it was the first time a game actually made them feel gross instead of scared. | © Sierra On-Line
Alone in the Dark

4. Alone in the Dark (1992)

Edward Carnby walks into Derceto Manor looking for a missing person and finds a house that seems to be rearranging itself against him. Alone in the Dark put a fixed camera behind every corner years before anyone called that a genre. Tank controls, zombie-infested libraries, a soundtrack that creaks louder than the floorboards. Every survival horror game that followed owes it rent it never paid. | © Infogrames
Scissorman Clock Tower 1995 1

3. Clock Tower (1995)

Jennifer Simpson gets dropped into an orphanage and the only weapon the game gives her is the ability to run and hide. Clock Tower built its entire horror around Scissorman, a lanky stalker who could show up in any room without warning. There's no combat, no health bar to manage, just panic and a point and click cursor shaking in your hand. It proved helplessness could be scarier than any monster with teeth. | © Human Entertainment
Silent Hill

2. Silent Hill (1999)

Harry Mason walks into Silent Hill looking for his daughter and the town answers with fog instead of directions. Silent Hill used the original PlayStation's weak draw distance as a design choice, turning limitation into atmosphere. Radio static meant something was close before you ever saw it. Konami built dread out of hardware restrictions that most studios were still apologizing for. | © Konami
Resident Evil 2

1. Resident Evil 2 (1998)

Leon Kennedy's first night on the job is a zombie outbreak, and Raccoon Police Department is already lost. Resident Evil 2 split the story into two campaigns so Claire Redfield's run through the same halls never felt redundant. Mr. X stomping through the station turned exploration into something closer to being hunted. It is the rare sequel that made the original feel like a rough draft. | © Capcom

Dated graphics and clunky controls don't make these any less terrifying, and some of gaming's most genuinely unsettling experiences came from decades ago. Here are 15 retro horror games that will still keep you up at night.
