1-26

About

About this gallery:

To create this list, we decided to take a chronological journey through some of the biggest failures in video game history (with some companies being the usual suspects).

We're limiting ourselves to the top 25, though I'm sure you're thinking of a game we didn't include. If so, why not mention it in the comments? | © Hello Games

Cropped E T the Extra Terrestrial

25. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

Imagine being so confident in a movie tie-in that you give a single developer five weeks to make it. Atari thought E.T. would be the Christmas miracle of 1982. Instead, they produced a game so awful that it ended up buried in a landfill. Literally.

Cropped Pac Man

24. Pac-Man (Atari 2600, 1982)

Atari’s version of Pac-Man was like an unseasoned meal – a lot of the good stuff was lost in translation. Rushed to meet deadlines, it was poorly optimized, visually unappealing, and filled with flickering ghosts. It might have been better off staying in the maze.

Cropped Daikatana

23. Daikatana (2000)

John Romero famously promised to "make you his b***h," but it turns out Daikatana only made Ion Storm the laughingstock of gaming. With endless delays, sky-high hype, and outdated gameplay upon release, the katana fell flat on its face rather than slicing through the competition.

Duke Nukem Forever

22. Duke Nukem Forever (2011)

Fifteen years is a long time to wait for... well, this. Duke might’ve been king in the '90s, but after being passed between developers like an unwanted casserole, Duke Nukem Forever became a relic of outdated jokes, aged gameplay, and awkward graphics. Not very "forever" indeed.

Aliens Colonial Marines

21. Aliens: Colonial Marines (2013)

A trailer full of tense atmosphere and xenomorph terror? Count us in! Too bad the final product felt like a community theater version of Alien. Bugs in both the technical and literal sense, clunky AI, and broken promises turned what should have been an epic shooter into a cosmic flop.

Cropped Simcity

20. SimCity (2013)

When a game about city building can't handle the population of its own servers, you know something's wrong. Always-online DRM made SimCity a ghost town at launch. It’s like someone built a bustling metropolis and then forgot to install plumbing – it looked nice, but nothing worked.

Battlefield 4

19. Battlefield 4 (2013)

Battlefield 4's grand ambitions met reality in the form of crashing servers and missing features. It launched with enough bugs to start an entomology class, proving that rushing development to meet a next-gen console release doesn’t always lead to victory.

No Mans Sky

18. No Man's Sky (2016)

Promises of an endless universe full of adventure quickly turned into a lonely, empty wasteland. With hyped features missing and only a smattering of procedurally generated sameness, players felt like Hello Games had misplaced their sense of exploration. At least it got better... eventually.

Lawbreakers

17. LawBreakers (2017)

You’d think a fast-paced arena shooter by one of the creators of Gears of War would be a slam dunk, right? Sadly, LawBreakers entered an oversaturated market, and it turns out gamers were more interested in colorful heroes than grim gravity-defying combat. Cliffy B's attempt fell to gravity after all.

Mass Effect Andromeda

16. Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017)

Mass Effect had high standards, so when Andromeda debuted with glitchy animations and a half-baked plot, fans weren't exactly thrilled. The behind-the-scenes chaos of rushed deadlines and mismanaged teams showed us that the Pathfinder needed a few more years to chart this course.

| © BioWare

STAR WARS Battlefront II

15. Star Wars Battlefront II (2017)

It takes skill to turn Star Wars into a PR nightmare. DICE managed it with Battlefront II, thanks to egregious loot boxes that felt more like gambling than gaming. The rebellion this time wasn't against the Empire but against EA's wallet-squeezing practices.

Fallout 76

14. Fallout 76 (2018)

An online multiplayer Fallout seemed like a good idea – until players discovered the game was as buggy as a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Glitches, repetitive quests, and a lack of NPCs made the experience feel empty, which isn't what you want when everyone around you is out for survival.

| © Bethesda Game Studios

Artifact

13. Artifact (2018)

Valve entered the card game arena with high hopes, but Artifact was more “what even is this?” than groundbreaking innovation. A complicated economy and pay-to-play model made players bail faster than Valve could say “Half-Life 3,” leaving Artifact to gather digital dust.

Anthem

12. Anthem (2019)

Iron Man suits? Check. Cool jetpacks? Check. Anything fun to do with them? Uh, not really. With a story that never took flight, bugs that dragged the experience down, and endgame content thinner than a rogue's patience, Anthem was more like a sad trombone.

| © BioWare

WWE 2 K20

11. WWE 2K20 (2019)

Fans wanted a smooth wrestling experience, but what they got was closer to slapstick comedy. Characters twisted into unholy abominations, bugs ran rampant, and the only thing WWE 2K20 managed to pin was its own dignity to the mat.

Marvels Avengers

10. Marvel's Avengers (2020)

Superheroes might be able to save the world, but they couldn’t save this game. Bland missions, a lack of variety, and way too much grinding left players feeling less like mighty Avengers and more like office interns running an errand list for Nick Fury.

Cyberpunk 2077

9. Cyberpunk 2077 (2020)

What started as a highly anticipated future RPG ended up with glitches that could break space-time. Despite some cool story moments, the countless bugs, particularly on older consoles, showed us that even cyber-enhanced promises can come crashing down if you forget to debug.

BALAN WONDERWORLD

8. Balan Wonderworld (2021)

Yuji Naka tried to recapture the magic of his Sonic days, but this time it felt more like a fever dream. With weird level designs, a nonsensical story, and confusing one-button gameplay, Balan Wonderworld showed us that nostalgia isn’t always a free pass to success.

| © Square Enix

E Football

7. eFootball 2022 (2021)

Who knew that turning PES into a free-to-play reboot could be so disastrous? With horrifying character models and awkward gameplay that made it feel more like a slapstick comedy than a sports sim, eFootball flubbed its debut like a soccer player missing an open goal.

BABYLONS FALL

6. Babylon's Fall (2022)

When the creators of Bayonetta bring out a game, you expect good things. Instead, Babylon's Fall looked like a student project that Platinum had forgotten to finish. The generic visuals and boring grind meant that by the time it fell, no one really noticed.

| © PlatinumGames

Gotham Knights

5. Gotham Knights (2022)

Gotham's heroes were supposed to shine after Batman left, but instead, Gotham Knights tripped over its own cape. Repetitive missions, clunky combat, and a lot of missed potential made this game more like the sidekick nobody asked for.

| © WB Games Montréal

Overwatch 2

4. Overwatch 2 (2022)

For a game with a “2” in the title, you’d expect it to be... different? Instead, Blizzard gave us a glorified patch and called it a sequel. The promised PvE modes never materialized, and the whole experience left players feeling like they'd been thrown into a repeat match they never queued for.

| © Blizzard Entertainment

Saints Row

3. Saints Row (2022)

The Saints Row reboot tried to recapture the series’ irreverent magic but ended up feeling as generic as a random fast-food burger. With bland humor and uninspired gameplay, this reboot made players long for the chaotic nonsense of yesteryear's Saints.

| © Deep Silver Volition

Redfall

2. Redfall (2023)

A vampire-hunting co-op game sounded exciting, but Arkane gave us a mostly empty open world, repetitive missions, and AI that forgot how to vampire. It was supposed to be thrilling, but instead, Redfall ended up as a gentle stumble into mediocrity.

| © Arkane Studios

Concord

1. Concord (2024)

Concord tried to jump into the hero shooter arena, but it seemed like Firewalk missed the memo on what makes them fun. Bland characters, lackluster design, and generic gameplay led players to agree on one thing: this was one Concord nobody was flying.
