15 Video Game Moral Choices That Divided the Entire Community

1-15

No right answer.

Fable II

15. Fable II (2008)

Peter Molyneux promised Fable II would let a dog die and make you feel it, and for once the hype matched the game. The real fight was never about the dog. It was about the ending, where you choose between resurrecting a village of dead villagers, getting rich, or getting your dog back. Most players picked the village and still felt cheated out of something. | © Microsoft Game Studios

Infamous

14. inFAMOUS (2009)

Cole MacGrath electrocutes a city and the game keeps score in blue or red. inFAMOUS ties your karma to actual gameplay power, so going evil in Empire City is objectively easier than staying good. Sucker Punch built a moral system where the harder path gives you weaker lightning. That imbalance is still the thing people argue about, not which ending is "right." | © Sony Computer Entertainment

Cropped Bastila Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2003

13. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (2003)

Revan's entire backstory hinges on a twist BioWare kept from players for the first twenty hours of Knights of the Old Republic. Finding out you were the villain doesn't erase the choices you already made under your old identity. The game asks you to reconcile a hero's actions with a Sith's history. Nobody agrees on which one deserves more weight. | © LucasArts

Dishonored

12. Dishonored (2012)

Corvo Attano can finish Dishonored without killing a single guard, and Arkane built a whole chaos system to reward it. Low chaos gets you a brighter Dunwall and a better ending. High chaos turns the city into plague-ridden misery by the final act. The argument isn't whether stealth is better, it's whether punishing violent playstyles this hard was ever fair game design. | © Bethesda Softworks

Frostpunk

11. Frostpunk (2018)

Frostpunk hands you a frozen city of survivors and a law book with child labor in it. 11 bit studios built a game where refusing that law can cost you the workforce that keeps the generator running. The city can survive intact and still fail what the game calls The Book of Laws ending. Winning and staying decent turned out to be two separate scoreboards. | © 11 bit studios

Life Is Strange

10. Life Is Strange (2015)

Max Caulfield can rewind time far enough to undo almost anything, except the storm that ends Arcadia Bay. Square Enix's Life Is Strange forces a choice between saving Chloe or letting an entire town survive. Dontnod built five episodes on the idea that friendship justifies the cost. Plenty of players rewound that final decision a dozen times and still picked wrong by their own standard. | © Square Enix

Cropped Dragon Age Origins

9. Dragon Age: Origins (2009)

Alistair asks you to choose between his claim to the throne and Loghain's usefulness, and Dragon Age: Origins does not soften either option. Loghain let King Cailan die at Ostagar, a betrayal the game never lets you forget. Keeping him alive to fight the Blight anyway feels like rewarding treason for competence. BioWare shipped this fight in 2009 and Alistair fans have not forgiven the writers for making Loghain's argument sound reasonable. | © Electronic Arts

The Walking Dead

8. The Walking Dead (2012)

Clementine watches every decision Lee Everett makes for five episodes, then The Walking Dead puts the final one in her hands instead. Kenny and Ben both die based on choices that felt urgent at 2 am and pointless on a second playthrough. Robert Kirkman's comic never had to answer for a branching finale like this. The game sold over 8.5 million episodes by 2013, and none of those buyers agree on whether Clementine's ending earned its weight. | © Telltale Games

Bioshock

7. BioShock (2007)

Would you kindly turns out to be the actual subject of BioShock, not a throwaway line. 2K's game spends its entire runtime pretending you're choosing between harvesting Little Sisters and saving them. Ken Levine built the twist so the choice you thought mattered gets exposed as none at all. Rapture's whole pitch was free will, so watching the game strip yours away is either the smartest trick in 2007 or the cruelest one. | © 2K Games

Detroit Become Human

6. Detroit: Become Human (2018)

Connor's ending in Detroit: Become Human can go three different ways depending on choices made hours earlier with no warning attached. Quantic Dream built the game around branching paths so tangled that David Cage claimed over 40 different endings exist across all three androids. Markus can lead a peaceful protest or a violent uprising, and the game refuses to say which one actually frees anybody. Some players finished Kara's story convinced they'd done everything right and watched her die anyway. | © Sony Interactive Entertainment

Spec Ops The Line

5. Spec Ops: The Line (2012)

Walker's final act in Spec Ops: The Line asks you to keep pulling the trigger on people who never fired back. Yager built the whole white phosphorus scene on a loading screen line that reads "To kill for yourself is murder." Players who quit the level felt smug about it, but the game had already made them complicit ten chapters earlier. Nobody walks away from this one agreeing on how much blame belongs to the controller in their hand. | © 2K Games

Fallout New Vegas

4. Fallout: New Vegas (2010)

Fallout: New Vegas came out in 2010 and its ending slides still start arguments about which flavor of control counts as the least bad one. Josh Sawyer put four factions at Hoover Dam and refused to let any of them fix the Mojave. House brings order through surveillance, the NCR brings bureaucracy and overreach, the Legion brings slavery dressed as strength. Yes Man hands the dam to the player alone, which sounds like freedom until you realize nobody else agreed to it. | © Bethesda Softworks

Red Dead Redemption 2

3. Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018)

Arthur Morgan spends Red Dead Redemption 2 dying of tuberculosis while the honor system quietly tallies every choice he makes. Rockstar lets you rob a train and still earn a peaceful death scene if you give enough to strangers along the way. That math feels wrong to people who think redemption should cost more than a few campfire donations. The game shipped in October 2018 and the two different final chapters it produces are the reason nobody's Arthur ends the same way. | © Rockstar Games

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt

2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2015)

Geralt can spend forty hours protecting Ciri and still watch her die in one specific epilogue if he was cold to her too often. CD Projekt Red tied that ending to a hidden approval score players couldn't see while playing. The Bloody Baron questline gets praised as the game's best writing, yet his family's fate splits into outcomes nobody rates as clearly right. The Witcher 3 launched in May 2015 and its epilogues are still the subject of guides promising to unlock "the good one." | © CD Projekt

Mass Effect

1. Mass Effect (2007-2012)

Mordin Solus sings Gilbert and Sullivan in his lab right before you can decide whether the genophage cure he built gets destroyed or finished. BioWare spread that choice across three games starting in 2007, so the weight of it built for years before Mass Effect 3 cashed it in. Renegade players call the cure reckless interference with an alien species that tried to wipe out humanity twice. Paragon players point out that Mordin himself, the man who helped design the genophage, spent his death agreeing with them. | © Electronic Arts
