Most trilogies stumble somewhere along the way, but a rare few nailed all three films from start to finish. Here are 15 movie trilogies where every single entry was flawless.

The 50 Best Games With An Amazing Story
15. The Naked Gun (1988-1994)
Leslie Nielsen plays Frank Drebin like the dumbest man alive is also the most confident man alive, and that contrast is the whole joke. The Naked Gun trilogy stacks sight gags so fast you miss half of them laughing at the other half. Nobody in these movies knows they're in a comedy, which is exactly why it works. Rewatching them now feels like finding a stash of jokes you forgot you knew by heart. | © Paramount Pictures
14. The Apu (1988-1959)
Three films, one boy, and a childhood in rural Bengal that unfolds without a single wasted frame. The Apu Trilogy follows Apu from a mud hut to manhood, through hunger, death, and small unexpected joy. Satyajit Ray shoots poverty without ever asking for pity, just attention. Watching it feels less like viewing a story and more like remembering one. | © Janus Films
13. Evil Dead (1981-1992)
Blood, chainsaws, and a cabin that should really just be condemned at this point. The Evil Dead trilogy starts as straight horror and ends up somewhere between slapstick and fever dream, and somehow the shift never feels like a betrayal. Sam Raimi's camera swoops through the woods like it's got its own opinion about what's coming. Bruce Campbell's chin alone deserves its own franchise. | © New Line Cinema
12. Three Colours (1993-1994)
Blue is about grief, White is about spite, Red is about connection, and together they form a color wheel of human feeling. Krzysztof Kieslowski built the Three Colours trilogy around the French flag but never made it feel like a lesson. Every glance and every silence carries weight without a single line explaining it. These are the kind of films you absorb rather than watch. | © Miramax
11. The Cornetto (2004-2013)
Cornettos show up in every single one of these movies, a running joke that somehow never gets old. The Cornetto Trilogy takes Edgar Wright's love of genre mashups and turns it into three completely different flavors of chaos: zombies, cops, and the apocalypse. Simon Pegg and Nick Frost anchor each one like old friends who happen to be surrounded by madness. It's proof that a running gag can carry more heart than most entire movies. | © Focus Features
10. Planet of the Apes (2011-2017)
Caesar never speaks much in the first film, but his eyes do all the work. Watching him go from a lab experiment to the leader of an entire species across three movies is the rare trilogy arc that actually earns its ending. Andy Serkis under all that motion capture makes you forget you're watching a digital ape at all. By the time War rolls around, you're not rooting for humans anymore, and that shift sneaks up on you. | © 20th Century Fox
9. How to Train Your Dragon (2010-2019)
Hiccup and Toothless meet because a kid too small to kill a dragon decides to befriend one instead. That single choice, made in a Viking village that hates dragons on principle, carries three full movies without ever running out of feeling. DreamWorks let this one age its characters for real, so the kid in the first film is genuinely a young man by the third. Few animated trilogies let their hero grow up on screen this convincingly. | © Universal Pictures
8. The Dollars (1964-1966)
Nobody in these movies has a real name, just squints and ponchos and a whistle that means trouble. Sergio Leone stretched silence out until it felt louder than gunfire, and Clint Eastwood built an entire career out of saying less with more. The three-way standoff at the end of The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is still the gold standard for tension in a Western. These films taught a generation of directors that patience is its own kind of violence. | © United Artists
7. The Before (1995-2013)
Two people talk on a train, then a street, then a bookstore, and somehow that's the whole movie. Richard Linklater checked in on Jesse and Celine every nine years, letting real time do the aging instead of makeup. Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy talk like people who've actually known each other, not actors reciting a script. By Before Midnight the romance has turned into something harder and more honest, and it never once feels like a betrayal of where they started. | © Warner Bros. / Sony Pictures Classics
6. Toy Story (1995-2010)
A cowboy doll and a spaceman action figure spend fifteen years teaching kids what it means to be replaced. Pixar could have stopped after the first Toy Story made its money back, but instead they let Andy grow up in real time across three films. The incinerator scene in the third one has traumatized more adults than any horror movie ever made. Few franchises manage an ending this final and still leave you wanting one more day with these toys. | © Walt Disney Pictures
5. Back to the Future (1985-1990)
A DeLorean, a flux capacitor, and 1.21 gigawatts turned time travel into something you actually wanted to try at home. Marty McFly bouncing between decades gave the trilogy a playground to mess with, and it never wastes the premise on a single lazy sequel cash-in. Part II doubles back on the original film's events and somehow makes rewatching your own plot feel fresh. Few franchises trust their own gimmick enough to take it this far and still land every landing. | © Universal Pictures
4. The Godfather (1972-1990)
Michael Corleone starts the story as the son who wanted out. By the end of Part II he's colder than the father he replaced, and the trilogy never rushes that transformation. Coppola treats crime less like spectacle and more like inheritance, something passed down at dinner tables and christenings. Even Part III, the one everybody argues about, still has scenes that hit like a gut punch. | © Paramount Pictures
3. The Dark Knight (2005-2012)
Heath Ledger's Joker walks into a hospital, flips a switch, and blows the place up like he's lighting a birthday candle. That scene alone tells you everything about why The Dark Knight trilogy still feels dangerous in a genre built on safety. Nolan treats Gotham like a city that could actually collapse under its own weight, not a backdrop for guys in costumes. Batman Begins earns the fear, The Dark Knight earns the chaos, and Rises earns the exhaustion of a man who gave everything. | © Warner Bros.
2. Star Wars (1977-1983)
1977 changed what a summer at the movies could feel like. Star Wars gave audiences a used, lived-in galaxy where the spaceships had dents and the heroes had doubts, and that texture carried straight through Empire and Jedi. Han Solo frozen in carbonite, Yoda flipping expectations about what a Jedi looks like, Vader's helmet coming off for one quiet human moment. None of it needed CGI polish to work, because the story never leaned on spectacle to begin with. | © 20th Century Studios
1. The Lord of the Rings (2001-2003)
Nine strangers agree to walk into danger together, and somehow three movies later you know every one of their footsteps. The Lord of the Rings never treats its runtime as a burden, it uses every extra minute to let Middle-earth breathe. Sam carrying Frodo up Mount Doom lands harder than any battle scene in the whole series. Peter Jackson built something so complete that going back feels less like rewatching and more like visiting. | © New Line CinemaMost trilogies stumble somewhere along the way, but a rare few nailed all three films from start to finish.
