15 Movie Villains People Find Weirdly Attractive

1-15

Shouldn't, but do.

Scar

15. Scar

Jeremy Irons voiced Scar in The Lion King and admitted he leaned into the camp because Shakespeare's Richard III was the model. That villain math shouldn't work on a cartoon lion built for children. Yet "Be Prepared" gives him a Broadway number and a body that owns every frame he's in. People built entire arguments about attraction around a character who murders his own brother. | © Walt Disney Pictures
Pirates of the Caribbean The Curse of the Black Pearl Captain Barbossa

14. Captain Barbossa

Geoffrey Rush plays Barbossa as a corpse under moonlight for half of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, cursed gold and all. Nobody asked for a rotting pirate captain to become anyone's type, and yet the swagger survives the reveal. He quotes the Code at Elizabeth Swann like scripture he wrote himself. That confidence is the entire disagreement in one sentence. | © Walt Disney Pictures
Bane

13. Bane

Tom Hardy trained his voice for months to make Bane's mask sound almost gentle in The Dark Knight Rises, released in 2012 by Warner Bros. Half the audience heard menace. The other half heard something closer to intimacy, filtered through rubber and static. A villain whose face you never fully see becoming a body-type discourse says more about the fanbase than the film. | © Warner Bros.
Dracula

12. Dracula

Gary Oldman turns into a young man again just by feeding on blood in Bram Stoker's Dracula, Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 film for Columbia Pictures. That transformation scene is the hinge the whole debate turns on. Some viewers can't get past the count who stalks Mina Harker across centuries. Others point out he cries actual tears before he does anything monstrous at all. | © Columbia Pictures
Cropped Commodus Gladiator 2000

11. Commodus

Joaquin Phoenix based Commodus on a childhood that never earned his father's approval, and Gladiator makes sure you feel it. He begs Marcus Aurelius for love in one scene and strangles him for the throne in the next. That whiplash is exactly why people can't agree on how to feel about him. Ridley Scott gave the emperor real history to distort and turned him magnetic in the process. | © Universal Pictures
Agent Smith

10. Agent Smith

Hugo Weaving turned down a return to the role in later sequels before coming back for The Matrix Resurrections in 2021. Agent Smith has no body of his own, just a face borrowed from a system that hates humans. That should make him repellent, not magnetic. Somehow the flat vowels and the contempt in every line reading became the whole appeal. | © Warner Bros.
David Carradine

9. Bill

David Carradine almost died during production of Kill Bill, accidentally hanged in a closet scene gone wrong in 2003. Bill spends most of his screen time talking, not fighting, which is rare for a Quentin Tarantino villain. He raised The Bride's daughter, poisoned her wedding, and still gets a death scored like a tragedy. Nobody agrees on whether that ending asks you to grieve him or not. | © Miramax
Severus Snape in Harry Potter

8. Severus Snape

Alan Rickman knew Severus Snape's full arc years before most of the Harry Potter books were even published, according to J.K. Rowling herself. Snape spends seven films being cruel to a child who reminds him of the man who took Lily from him. The reveal in Deathly Hallows recasts every cold scene that came before it. Whether that recontextualizing earns forgiveness or just explains cruelty better is where people split. | © Warner Bros.
Magneto

7. Magneto

Ian McKellen was 61 when he first put on Magneto's helmet for X-Men in 2000. Erik Lehnsherr survived a concentration camp as a child, a detail the film uses to justify almost everything he does afterward. His argument against Charles Xavier is coherent, sometimes more coherent than the hero's. Giving a villain the better speech is a choice, and this franchise keeps making it. | © 20th Century Fox
Tyler Durden

6. Tyler Durden

Brad Pitt gained real muscle for Fight Club but refused a stunt double for the bare knuckle scenes, insisting on doing them himself. Tyler Durden exists to sell an audience on destruction dressed up as freedom. Chuck Palahniuk wrote the character years before David Fincher ever cast him, and the novel is even harder on him than the movie. People still walk out quoting him like he won the argument the film was trying to make against him. | © 20th Century Fox
Eric Killmonger

5. Eric Killmonger

Eric Killmonger tells T'Challa "bury me in the ocean, with my ancestors that jumped from the ships" and then dies standing up rather than get saved. Michael B. Jordan spent months on his body for that final scene, but the line is what people quote. Black Panther gave its villain a real historical wound, colonialism and stolen lineage, instead of a generic grudge. Wanting him to win a little doesn't cancel out the coup and the bodies along the way. | © Walt Disney Studios
Kylo Ren

4. Kylo Ren

Somewhere between "let the past die" and taking his helmet off, Kylo Ren stopped being just Han and Leia's disappointing kid. Adam Driver plays him twitchy and overgrown, throwing tantrums with a lightsaber like a toddler who found a weapon. He kills his own father in The Force Awakens and the franchise still asks you to mourn his redemption later. That whiplash is exactly what keeps the argument over him alive. | © Walt Disney Studios
Christoph Waltz Hans Landa

3. Hans Landa

Christoph Waltz won an Oscar in 2010 for playing a Nazi who compliments strudel before he orders a family shot through the floorboards. Hans Landa switches between English, French, German and Italian in the opening scene alone, and Quentin Tarantino wrote every language shift on purpose. Nothing about the character asks for sympathy, only attention. The charm is the trap, and people fell for it anyway. | © The Weinstein Company
Cropped American Psycho 2000 Patrick Bateman

2. Patrick Bateman

Patrick Bateman recites Huey Lewis and the News trivia right before he puts an axe through Paul Allen, and the scene plays it completely straight. Christian Bale kept his voice flat and his skincare routine longer than the murders themselves. Bret Easton Ellis wrote the character as a satire of empty status obsession, not a role model. Somehow he became a business-card meme and a fitness inspiration at the same time. | © Lions Gate Films
Loki

1. Loki

Loki dies in the first ten minutes of Avengers: Infinity War, choked out by Thanos, and Tom Hiddleston still got his own streaming show three years later. He's killed civilians in Stuttgart, enslaved half of New York in The Avengers, and lied to everyone including himself. Marvel kept giving him better suits and softer lighting instead of consequences. The rehabilitation worked so well people forget what got him arrested in the first place. | © Walt Disney Studios
