15 Movies That Were Didn't Match Up to the Marketing

1-15

The trailer lied.

TV Shows & Movies - October 28th 2026, 20:30 GMT+1
Snow Dogs

15. Snow Dogs (2002)

Every trailer for Snow Dogs promised talking huskies cracking jokes through an entire movie. That gimmick shows up for about ninety seconds in a dream sequence and then vanishes completely. What audiences actually got was a fish out water comedy about a dentist discovering his birth family in Alaska. Parents who rented this for their kids based on the poster alone got a very different afternoon than expected. | © Walt Disney Pictures
Kangaroo Jack

14. Kangaroo Jack (2003)

A kangaroo steals a jacket full of cash and hops off into the Australian outback. That's the entire premise Kangaroo Jack sold through posters of a CGI marsupial wearing sunglasses and rapping. The real movie spends most of its runtime on two guys from Brooklyn bickering while barely interacting with the animal at all. Kids showed up for a wisecracking cartoon kangaroo and sat through a mob subplot instead. | © Warner Bros. Pictures
Click

13. Click (2006)

Picture a universal remote that skips you past every boring moment in your life. That's the pitch Click sold, and for the first half hour it delivers exactly that kind of broad Adam Sandler comedy. Then the remote starts skipping ahead without permission, and the movie turns into a meditation on missed childhoods and dying fathers. Nobody buying a ticket for fart jokes expected to leave in tears. | © Sony Pictures Releasing
The Fountain

12. The Fountain (2006)

Space travel, warrior monks, a dying tree, three timelines colliding across a thousand years. The trailers for The Fountain leaned hard into that imagery and sold something close to science fiction spectacle. What actually plays out is a quiet meditation on grief, framed as a husband refusing to accept his wife's death. Anyone expecting another effects-driven adventure got something far stranger and far sadder instead. | © Warner Bros. Pictures
Downsizing 2017

11. Downsizing (2017)

Shrinking yourself down to five inches tall sounds like pure comedy, and that's how every ad for Downsizing played it. Matt Damon getting miniaturized next to tiny mansions and tiny margaritas practically begged people to expect a broad satire about consumerism. Instead the back half drifts into class struggle, climate dread, and a refugee storyline nobody saw coming from the poster. The shrinking is barely the point by the time the credits roll. | © Paramount Pictures
Cropped Adventureland

10. Adventureland (2009)

Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg on a poster screamed another raunchy teen comedy in the Superbad mold. What Miramax actually sold was a quiet story about broke twentysomethings stuck at a crappy amusement park job after college. The jokes are there but they sit next to real stuff like dead parents, failed marriages, and the panic of going nowhere. People expecting a party movie got a slow summer instead. | © Miramax
Cropped Bridge to Terabithia

9. Bridge to Terabithia (2007)

A lion, a witch, and a wardrobe energy ran through every ad Disney cut for this one. Kids went in expecting a kingdom full of giants and monsters based on the trailer alone. Most of that world only exists in the heads of two lonely kids escaping a cruel school year. The ending has nothing to do with fantasy creatures and everything to do with loss. | © Walt Disney Pictures
Sweeney Todd

8. Sweeney Todd (2007)

Blood sprays across the screen in nearly every shot of Sweeney Todd, and that's exactly what the trailers leaned on. What they buried was the fact that Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter are singing through almost the entire thing. This is Stephen Sondheim's stage musical first, throat-slitting barber second. Warner Bros sold a horror movie and handed audiences an opera about grief. | © Warner Bros. Pictures
Jennifers Body

7. Jennifer's Body (2009)

Megan Fox licking a knife was the entire pitch for this one, and Fox sold it that way on purpose. Teenage boys showed up expecting a slasher built around a hot girl killing people for shock value. Diablo Cody's script is actually about a friendship curdling under jealousy and trauma, with the horror as backdrop. The marketing buried its own best feature to chase an audience that walked right past it. | © 20th Century Fox
Cropped Crimson Peak

6. Crimson Peak (2015)

Guillermo del Toro built a career on monsters, so Universal cut every trailer for this one like a haunted house ride. Ghosts do show up in Crimson Peak, but they're barely the point of the story. What's actually running the show is a gothic romance about inheritance, betrayal, and a house that's rotting from greed. Horror fans left confused while the people who would've loved it never bought a ticket. | © Universal Pictures
Cropped Colossal

5. Colossal (2016)

Anne Hathaway drinking her way through a breakup is not what Colossal is actually about. The posters sold a quirky monster comedy, giant creature stomping Seoul while she stumbles around her hometown looking confused. What it actually traces is a controlling man slowly revealing how dangerous he is, with the monster as a metaphor for that threat. Neon sold it as a kaiju comedy because the real pitch was a much harder sell. | © Neon
It Comes at Night

4. It Comes at Night (2017)

Nobody in It Comes at Night ever explains what "it" is, and that's the entire problem with how A24 sold it. Trailers cut together shadowy threats behind a red door like a creature was waiting on the other side. The real horror is two families turning on each other over a sickness nobody can see or stop. Audiences expecting a monster reveal got a story about paranoia eating people alive instead. | © A24
The Grey

3. The Grey (2011)

Liam Neeson punching a wolf. That's the image Open Road Films put on every poster for The Grey, and that fight barely exists in the actual film. What plays out instead is a quiet, brutal meditation on mortality, with plane crash survivors freezing and starving in the Alaskan wilderness one by one. The wolves matter less than the men slowly making peace with dying. | © Open Road Films
The Driver Drive 2011

2. Drive (2011)

Ryan Gosling in a scorpion jacket, a getaway car, neon lights streaking past. FilmDistrict leaned hard into that image and sold Drive as a fast, loud action thriller built for adrenaline. Long stretches of it move in near silence, built on glances and stillness rather than chases. People who showed up expecting Fast & Furious got something closer to a European arthouse film wearing a stunt driver's jacket. | © FilmDistrict
Mother

1. Mother! (2017)

A couple's home gets invaded by strangers, and that's as far as Paramount's marketing for Mother! was willing to go. Underneath that setup sits a dense biblical allegory, with Jennifer Lawrence's character standing in for Mother Earth getting destroyed by humanity itself. Jump scares and tension got pushed front and center while the film's actual ambitions stayed hidden until opening weekend. Walking in cold meant watching something closer to a fever dream than a thriller. | © Paramount Pictures
