Jack’s tattoos did not require an origin story. That infamous detour captures the frustrating side of *Lost*: an island full of urgent mysteries occasionally put on hold for another flashback explaining somebody’s baggage. The early third-season captivity storyline particularly tests how long confinement can substitute for momentum. Excellent performances and genuinely moving payoffs make quitting difficult, which almost makes the stalling worse. You can follow every timeline in *Westworld* and still struggle to care about what happens next. The first season’s revelations work because Dolores and Maeve give the elaborate machinery an emotional purpose. Subsequent identity swaps and fractured chronology increasingly interrupt that connection. Even the move outside the park, into a society governed by the predictive system Rehoboam, trades the western setting’s unsettling intimacy for broader technological debates. A fairy-tale character struggling through ordinary small-town life is a lovely premise. *Once Upon a Time* gets considerable mileage from that contrast, especially through Regina, whose bitterness gives Storybrooke more bite than its storybook residents suggest. Repeated curses and tangled family revelations eventually make the emotional stakes difficult to hold onto. 11. Prison Break (2005)

Breaking out was the easy part. Finding enough story afterward proves considerably trickier for *Prison Break*, whose opening season turns architecture, alliances, and Michael Scofield’s tattoo into an ingenious escape puzzle. The fugitive chase offers a reasonable next step, but the later pursuit of Scylla pulls the series toward a sprawling conspiracy thriller. Michael remains resourceful; the writing becomes overly reliant on that resourcefulness. Joe Carroll’s recruitment skills deserve their own investigation. The murderous novelist in *The Following* has enough devoted accomplices to make Kevin Bacon’s Ryan Hardy distrust practically every introduction. Initially, that uncertainty gives the thriller a nasty charge. Repeated ambushes and concealed allegiances then make suspicion automatic, draining the reveals of surprise. James Purefoy brings charisma to Carroll, but charisma can only sustain so many variations on the same pursuit before another escaped killer becomes an administrative inconvenience. | © Warner Bros. Greys Anatomy — 9. Grey’s Anatomy (2005)

The elevator doors open, two doctors exchange a loaded glance, and your evening disappears into another relationship crisis. *Grey’s Anatomy* built an enormously effective rhythm around surgery, sex, and professional ambition. Over its long run, however, familiar departures and replacement interns make the hospital feel like a workplace you should have resigned from several promotions ago. Individual patients can still supply affecting stories. Keeping up with everyone treating them takes considerably more enthusiasm, particularly once your favorite doctors have left. | © Shondaland

8. Riverdale (2017)

How does a show featuring murderous conspiracies, superpowers, and a return to high school in the distant past become boring? *Riverdale* demonstrates that constant incident can eventually flatten suspense. Jason Blossom’s murder gives the opening season a mystery with recognizable emotional stakes; later upheavals repeatedly alter the rules under which those stakes operate. The absurdity is often enjoyable, especially when the cast commits completely. 7. The Walking Dead (2010)

An entire episode away from the main conflict can deepen an ensemble drama. Several such detours, scattered across an already prolonged confrontation, can make you forget why everyone was fighting. *The Walking Dead* repeatedly runs into this problem, particularly during the buildup to the war with Negan and its drawn-out execution. Its quieter chapters sometimes reveal more than the carnage does, but separating the survivors so frequently makes the viewing experience fragmented. 6. Stranger Things (2016)

Hawkins works best when its kids can actually share a scene. As *Stranger Things* spreads its ensemble across separate adventures, maintaining that chemistry becomes harder, even when individual storylines deliver. Season four divides attention between Hawkins, California, Russia, and Eleven’s laboratory experiences, with expanded runtimes accommodating the traffic. Max’s story demonstrates how powerful that extra space can be. 5. Sherlock (2010)

Benedict Cumberbatch rattling through deductions while Martin Freeman looks understandably irritated remains a reliable pleasure. Unfortunately, later *Sherlock* increasingly treats solving crimes as an interruption to the Holmes family’s spectacular personal problems. The fourth season’s Eurus storyline pushes that preference into elaborate psychological games, with ordinary detective work barely getting a look-in. Feature-length episodes leave plenty of room for declarations about Sherlock’s exceptional mind. At some point, an anonymous threatening message should qualify for an automatic spam filter. *Pretty Little Liars* stretches its central harassment mystery across seven seasons, repeatedly offering answers that open another round of suspicion. Aria, Spencer, Hanna, and Emily’s friendship gives the series something sturdier than its increasingly elaborate explanations. Still, the accumulation of secret connections and replacement suspects makes deduction feel pointless. Rooting for Lip Gallagher becomes exhausting when every promising opportunity comes with the expectation that he’ll sabotage it. *Shameless* understands how poverty, addiction, and family obligations obstruct progress, and its early seasons make those setbacks hurt. Across eleven seasons, repeated reversals can also undermine the pleasure of watching anyone grow. Fiona’s departure after season nine removes a particularly valuable source of emotional continuity. Watching Frank Underwood acquire power is considerably more entertaining than watching the series invent reasons he might lose it. *House of Cards* initially makes political maneuvering feel intimate and dangerous, inviting the audience to enjoy its protagonist’s appalling methods. Later rounds of threats, negotiations, and betrayals produce diminishing returns. Claire’s presidency gives Robin Wright a deserved spotlight, but the final season’s Shepherd family adds another competing interest when the drama needs focus.
