Elliot went from Australia to Ireland the last time around, so where will he go next? Is there even another destination for him? Actor Jamie Dornan has the answer regarding a potential season 3 of The Tourist on Netflix.
The Tourist on Netflix gathered quite the fanbase in recent weeks, following the story of Elliot on his quest to regain his memories – quite the task if you know nothing about yourself and with people trying to kill you while you figure out who you actually are.
The Tourist was initially planned as a mini-series with only six episodes, but after the response the show got from fans, it was renewed for a second season by Netflix, bringing Elliot (Jamie Dornan) and Helen (Danielle Macdonald) to Ireland to follow a new lead to Elliot's past.
And, not to spoil anything, but the ending of season 2 is complete bonkers. It also sets up a potential third season if creators Harry and Jack Williams are so inclined – and if the cast is on board. Jamie Dornan shares some more insight on that.
Jamie Dornan Says He's "Very Busy For The Next Couple Of Years"
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, lead actor and our favorite amnesia-stricken traveler Jamie Dornan was asked about the chances of season 3 of The Tourist happening. We're still waiting for an official announcement by Netflix, but they have remained tight-lipped on that front. Dornan, on the other hand, shared bits and pieces.
He said there are "conversations" about a new season – honestly, we've figured as much. With the ending of season 2 being the ending that it is, there's quite a lot to unpack about Elliot's past. That's ideal for another season and, to be frank, it's a little obvious that the Williams aren't done telling their story.
It's not only in their hands if that happens, though: Netflix needs to give green light, and, ideally, the cast needs to be ready. And that's a problem, at least for now, as Dornan shared that he's "very busy for the next couple of years" – basically too busy for another season of The Tourist, at least for now.
The Tourist's Season 3 Would Take Place In The Netherlands
Just because a third season doesn't seem too likely in the near future, that doesn't mean there are no plans for it already. At the end of the last season, Elliot (or rather: Eugene) and Helen went off to Amsterdam, so chances are – if the show gets renewed, of course – we'll pick up right where we left off. Dornan would be on board with that, too:
There’s probably a world where it happens in Holland in some capacity, if they were to do more, which wouldn’t be a bad thing. I like the Dutch, they’re an interesting bunch, and always really fun, and it’s a beautiful place. But who knows!
Dornan also told Tudum that he's not the only one with a busy schedule, so going to Amsterdam is hard for his co-stars as well, even though the ending of the show is purposely open-ended: "I think this time they are leaving [the future of the show] to all kinds of factors –– of if and when and how that would happen to do more –– and to see if people want more. But that’s also a timing thing. Everyone’s busy! I’m busy, Danielle’s busy. So we will see, but they’ve definitely left the option open, I think."
