The Watcher on Netflix has been renewed for a second season, much to everyone's surprise. As the show is loosely based on true events – and I mean really loosely – many viewers wondered how the show could even continue as the case never got solved. Turns out: the ambiguous ending of the show wasn't because of the equally unsure ending of the true story, but because the show's story isn't over yet.
Netflix already changed several details from the original story of a dream house turned nightmare home, so we're expecting even more creative liberty and even less parallels between fact and fiction with Season 2. But when is it time for The Watcher to return?
The Watcher Season 2: Expected Release Date – If It Releases, That Is...
While the show has initially been renewed just one month after its release in 2022, there wasn't really any hopeful update about the production. For the longest time, that wasn't reason to worry, considering the Hollywood Strikes delayed a lot of projects.
But to this day, we're still waiting for Netflix to come forward and share further plans. At this point, a second season would have been expected to release in fall 2024, but instead, fans just got more uncertainty – from one of the lead actresses, to make matters worse.
Naomi Watts told Entertainment Weekly that she doesn't know how the show would continue and also hasn't heard anything other than the fact that it has been greenlit. But what does that mean for the show's future?
We expect a release in early-2025 at the soonest.
The Watcher Season 2 Might Ditch Nora And Dean
There are lots of theories out there about why Watts doesn't know the future plans. One of them claims that The Watcher is supposed to become an anthology series and completely switch characters. That wouldn't be creator Ryan Murphy's first rodeo with a format like that, so it's entirely possible that season 2 will focus on the new owners of the house.
That would probably also make the most sense, at least more than following Dean and Nora into their new home. Those poor folks deserve a house without all the creepiness, don't you think?
