Some series don’t just air, they take over the conversation for twelve months. Here are 15 TV shows that defined the year they came out.

Paramount Has Blacklisted These 15 Actors
15. Dallas (1978-1991)
Who shot J.R.? That question actually stopped conversations at work the next morning. Dallas turned oil money and family betrayal into appointment viewing, with cliffhangers so sharp the whole country waited months for answers. It is the reason "primetime soap" became a genre people took seriously. | © CBS
14. Happy Days (1974-1984)
A leather jacket and a thumbs up turned Fonzie into the coolest guy on television. Happy Days looked back at the 1950s with so much warmth that the decade itself got rebranded in the public imagination. Richie Cunningham's small dramas felt huge because the show never winked at its own nostalgia. It just lived in it, and audiences happily moved in too. | © ABC
13. The Andy Griffith Show (1960-1968)
Mayberry did not have crime, traffic, or much of anything stressful, and that was the entire point. Andy Taylor solved problems with patience instead of a gun, raising his son and tolerating Barney Fife's chaos with the same easy calm. The Andy Griffith Show made small town life feel like something worth protecting. Few shows have ever been this gentle without turning boring. | © CBS
12. Star Trek (1966-1969)
Three names, one mission: Kirk, Spock, and a five year journey through space nobody on television had attempted before. Star Trek used alien planets to sneak in arguments about war, race, and ethics that network executives would never have approved outright. The Enterprise crew argued like family and bled like soldiers. It got canceled after three seasons and somehow became bigger after it ended. | © NBC
11. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (1990-1996)
A kid from West Philadelphia lands in a mansion, and suddenly culture clash comedy has a new blueprint. Will Smith played a version of himself loud enough to carry every episode, while Uncle Phil's disappointed stare became its own punchline. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air balanced jokes about money and family with moments that landed harder than sitcoms usually dared. The episode where Will's father leaves again still catches people off guard decades later. | © NBC
10. ER (1994-2009)
Blood, shouting, and a gurney crashing through double doors within the first thirty seconds. ER moved faster than television was supposed to move, with dialogue overlapping and cameras weaving through County General like they had somewhere urgent to be. George Clooney's Doug Ross gave the chaos a soft center, a doctor who broke rules for kids nobody else fought for. Medical dramas before this felt like waiting rooms. This one felt like a pulse. | © NBC
9. The Golden Girls (1985-1992)
Four women over fifty, sharing a house in Miami and absolutely nobody's idea of a toned-down sitcom cast. The Golden Girls let Dorothy, Blanche, Rose, and Sophia talk about sex, death, and loneliness at the kitchen table over cheesecake, no subject off limits. Sophia's one-liners landed harder than jokes from characters a third her age. The show figured out that getting older could be the funniest, most honest stage of the whole story. | © NBC
8. Sex and the City (1998-2004)
Four friends, one city, and a typewriter narrating sex lives nobody on network TV would touch. Sex and the City gave Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda the kind of frank, funny conversations women usually had in private, now happening over brunch on screen. Manolo Blahniks became a punchline and a flex at the same time. It made wanting more out of love and your own life look less like a flaw and more like a plan. | © HBO
7. All in the Family (1971-1979)
Archie Bunker sat in his chair and said the things polite television had spent decades avoiding. All in the Family put racism, sexism, and generational resentment right in the living room, then dared you to laugh anyway. Norman Lear built a sitcom where the bigot was the punchline, not the hero, even when the studio audience groaned instead of laughed. Nothing before it had trusted a sitcom audience with that much discomfort. | © CBS
6. The Sopranos (1999-2007)
A duck family lands in Tony Soprano's pool, and a grown man having a panic attack over it opens the whole show. The Sopranos took the mob story everyone thought they knew and handed it to a guy in therapy, worried about his mother and his weight. David Chase refused easy answers, including that ending, cutting to black mid-conversation like the cable just died. Prestige television exists because this show proved people would sit with a character this ugly and still not look away. | © HBO
5. I Love Lucy (1951-1957)
Lucille Ball got her arm stuck in a candy factory conveyor belt and somehow made it one of the funniest things ever filmed. I Love Lucy ran on physical comedy at a time when television barely knew what to do with a camera, let alone a woman willing to fall over for a laugh. It also quietly invented the three camera setup that basically every sitcom after it would borrow. People remember the grape stomping and the chocolate factory, but the real trick was making a housewife the smartest person in every room. | © CBS
4. The Simpsons (1989-)
Springfield has no state, no map location, and somehow every American still recognizes it instantly. The Simpsons turned a nuclear family into something sharper than most live action shows ever managed, hiding real class anxiety and workplace misery under yellow skin and overbites. Homer choking Bart was a punchline, sure, but the show also found room for actual tenderness between gags. Few series have lasted long enough to outgrow their own golden age and still get credit for having one. | © Fox
3. The Twilight Zone (1959-1964)
Rod Serling stood in front of the camera and told you, calmly, that none of this was going to end well. The Twilight Zone used aliens and mirrors and time loops to say things about paranoia and conformity that a straight drama never could've gotten past a network. "To Serve Man" remains one of the great gut punch twists in anything, television or otherwise. It proved science fiction on TV could carry real weight instead of just rubber monsters. | © CBS
2. Seinfeld (1989-1998)
Nothing happens in most episodes of Seinfeld, and that was the entire point. A soup vendor, a parking garage, a marble rye, all turned into fully formed crises because Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer treated every minor inconvenience like a personal betrayal. The show trusted its audience to laugh at pettiness without needing any of it to mean something bigger. Calling it "a show about nothing" sold it short; it was really a show about how insufferable everyone secretly is. | © NBC
1. Friends (1994-2004)
Central Perk's orange couch probably logged more screen time than some actual cast members. Friends figured out that twentysomethings stumbling through jobs, breakups, and bad apartments could carry a decade of television without ever running out of material. Ross and Rachel's will-they-won't-they stretched across years and somehow never fully wore out its welcome. The show turned hanging out into a genre, and nothing since has quite matched how easy it made friendship look. | © NBCSome series don’t just air, they take over the conversation for twelve months.
