Jim faxing messages to himself from inside the same office should not have worked as comedy gold, but it did. Season 2 of The Office is where Michael Scott stopped being unbearable and started being tragic in a way that made you love him anyway. The Jim and Pam tension, "Casino Night," Kevin's M&Ms fundraiser, all of it clicked into place at once. Dexter — 14. Dexter — Season 4 (2006-2013)
John Lithgow walked onto Dexter and made Arthur Mitchell, the Trinity Killer, into the most unsettling presence the show ever produced. Season 4 slows the pace down and lets dread build inside an ordinary suburban house instead of a dark alley. The final twist still lands like a gut punch even on a rewatch, because you know exactly what's coming and it doesn't help. Nothing happens in a lot of season four of Seinfeld, and that's exactly the point. This is the run where Jerry and George pitch NBC a show about nothing, which was basically Seinfeld making fun of itself while it was still figuring out what it was. "The Contest" alone earns this season a permanent spot in sitcom history. The Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce years give the show its rawest stretch, with Don drinking through his own identity crisis in real time. "The Suitcase" is forty-five minutes of Don and Peggy that plenty of people still call the best hour the show ever made. Four kids in West Baltimore carry most of this season, and none of them get a fair shot. The Wire shifts its focus to the school system without losing the corner boys or the cops circling them. Namond, Randy, Michael, and Dukie each end up somewhere different, and none of those endings feel like an accident. Few shows have made systemic failure feel this personal. | © HBO

Kendall, Shiv, and Roman spend the final season of Succession circling a throne that was never going to fit any of them. The Ferrari funeral opens the season on a joke about grief and ends up defining it. Boardroom votes replace sword fights, but the show still makes every meeting feel like a coronation. Big Pussy is a rat, and everyone at the table has no idea. The Sopranos spends its second season tightening that noose so slowly you almost forget it's there. Richie Aprile shows up as a genuine threat, restless and dangerous in a way Tony has to actually manage. A plane splits apart on an island, and forty-eight strangers have to figure out what happens next. Lost spends its first season building out characters through flashbacks that make the mystery feel secondary. Jack, Kate, Sawyer, Locke, all of them get introduced as people first, survivors second. The polar bear and the smoke and the hatch in the ground barely matter next to how much you end up caring who lives. | © ABC

Cropped stranger things season 4 — 6. Stranger Things — Season 4 (2016-2025)
Nine episodes wasn't enough, so Stranger Things gave season four movie length runtimes and somehow made it work. Vecna turns Hawkins into something genuinely unsettling instead of just nostalgic horror pastiche. Eddie Munson shreds "Master of Puppets" on a cliff in the Upside Down and the show earns every second of it. Max running from Kate Bush remains one of the best needle drops the series has ever pulled off. | © Netflix

True Detective Season 1 — 5. True Detective — Season 1 (2014-)
Rust Cohle's flat drawl narrating time as a flat circle shouldn't have worked on network television, let alone HBO prestige drama, but it turned into the thing everyone quoted for a year. The six minute tracking shot through that botched raid still gets passed around as proof of what a TV episode can pull off. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson spend most of the season arguing across decades, and neither performance blinks first. True Detective never fully matched this stretch again, which is exactly why people keep circling back to it. | © HBO

Friends Season 5 1 — 4. Friends — Season 5 (1994-2004)
The one where Ross and Emily's wedding falls apart in London closes out a season that never really slows down. Ross screaming "Rachel" at the altar is the kind of moment that gets replayed even by people who haven't seen the episode. Chandler and Monica's secret hookup, born out of that same trip, quietly sets up years of story nobody saw coming yet. Homer sells his soul to the Devil for a donut, and somehow that's not even the strangest thing season 5 of The Simpsons tries. This is the run with "Homer the Great," "Cape Feare," and Sideshow Bob taping rakes to his chest for no reason anyone can fully explain. The jokes come at a pace later seasons never quite matched, packing three punchlines into scenes that other shows would stretch across an act. Oberyn Martell dies with poison already working through his veins, and the Red Viper's fight against the Mountain still gets brought up as one of the roughest deaths the show ever staged. Season 4 of Game of Thrones also gives Tyrion his best courtroom scene, spitting fury at a trial rigged against him from the start. The Wildling attack on Castle Black turns into a full battle episode that HBO had never attempted at that scale before. Hank's death, the phone call to Skyler, the kidnapped baby, all of it lands in a single hour that never once slows down to catch its breath.
