Prison Break — 15. Prison Break (2005-2017)
Michael Scofield escapes Fox River in season one, and that should have been the whole show. Instead Prison Break spends the next several years sending him back into custody or back into a scheme, as if freedom was just a temporary status effect. Every season resets the same board: a new prison, a new conspiracy, a new reason Michael can't just stay out. The premise only worked once, and the show kept cashing that check anyway. | © Fox

Shameless — 14. Shameless (2011-2021)
Frank Gallagher gets sober, then he doesn't, then he does again, and Shameless treats that loop like it's still revealing something new about him. Across eleven seasons on Showtime, the Gallagher kids cycle through the same fights about money, loyalty, and who's abandoning who this time. Fiona leaves, someone else steps into her role, and the show acts surprised when the family breaks down the exact same way. Nobody in Charming ever seems to learn what a truce is worth. Sons of Anarchy runs on a specific engine: SAMCRO makes peace with a rival gang or cartel, something violent breaks that peace within a few episodes, and Jax ends up covered in someone else's blood by the finale. Miami keeps producing serial killers with oddly specific moral codes, and Dexter Morgan keeps finding the one that mirrors his own issues that season. Dexter leans on this formula so hard that by the later seasons it feels like a job description rather than a plot. House M D — 11. House, M.D. (2004-2012)
Every episode of House, M.D. starts with a patient collapsing somewhere unrelated to medicine, and that cold open never really changes. Gregory House then spends forty minutes rejecting two wrong diagnoses before landing on the rare condition nobody else considered. Wilson worries, Cuddy pushes back, House breaks a rule to save the patient anyway. The show ran that exact shape for eight seasons and called it character development. | © Fox

A curse gets broken, then reset, then broken again, and somewhere in there Once Upon a Time forgot to move forward. Storybrooke residents spend seven seasons rediscovering the same memories through the same magic loophole. New realms got bolted on every time the old ones stopped generating story, from Neverland to Camelot to Oz. Oliver Queen cannot walk past a mirror without seeing a man torn between two lives, and by season four that internal conflict had worn a groove into the floor. Arrow built entire seasons around a new Big Bad who mirrors Oliver's methods, questions his code, then dies in a finale that resets the board. Diggle gives the speech about darkness and family. Felicity threatens to leave the team, again. The show that kick-started an entire network universe never figured out a second gear. | © The CW

Six seasons of Lost and the survivors of Oceanic 815 kept circling the same questions about fate versus choice without ever landing anywhere new. Someone finds a hatch, a set of numbers, a smoke monster with an agenda, and by the time the flash-sideways arrived people had stopped keeping track of which mystery mattered. Characters wander the jungle, distrust each other, reconcile, then wander again. The show sold itself on answers it never had any intention of giving. | © ABC

How i met your mother — 7. How I Met Your Mother (2005-2014)
Nine years of build-up, and How I Met Your Mother spent most of them making Ted fall in love, get his heart broken, and swear off dating before doing it all again. Robin and Barney break up and reunite so many times the pattern becomes the joke. Marshall and Lily fight about Marshall's career, forgive each other, then fight about it again two seasons later. Pretty Little Liars — 6. Pretty Little Liars (2010-2017)
Someone in Rosewood always knows too much, and that someone is never who the show claims it is. Pretty Little Liars ran through Mona, then Charlotte, then a small army of copycats, each reveal promising closure before quietly opening the exact same door. The girls get threatening texts, panic, investigate, and land in danger with almost mechanical consistency. Riverdale — 5. Riverdale (2017-2023)
A town this small should not have room for a serial killer, a cult, and a musical episode. Riverdale burned through its Archie Comics setup so fast that by season three it was just recycling its own twists with new names attached. Betty finds a dark secret, Jason Blossom's death gets reinterpreted again, and some new masked figure threatens the town for the fourth time. The Walking Dead — 4. The Walking Dead (2010-2022)
Ten years in, the survivors of The Walking Dead were still finding a new settlement, trusting the wrong leader, and watching it burn. That loop ran through the Governor, Terminus, the Saviors, and the Whisperers with barely a change in the furniture. Rick's group would arrive, sense something off, and get proven right within a few episodes every single time. The zombies stopped being the point somewhere around season four, and the show never found a replacement. | © AMC

Greys Anatomy — 3. Grey's Anatomy (2005-)
Fifteen seasons in, Grey Sloan Memorial has survived a shooting, a bombing, a ferry crash, and a plane crash. Grey's Anatomy keeps a surgeon on the table while a doctor delivers the emotional monologue of the week, then repeats that structure with different organs. Meredith loses another person she loves, cries in a stairwell, and gets back to work by the next episode. The hospital drama figured out its formula early and simply refused to retire it. | © ABC

Elena Gilbert cannot date anyone in Mystic Falls without a body count following shortly after. The Vampire Diaries ran the Salvatore brothers through the same triangle for eight seasons, swapping who was cursed, who was dying, and who had amnesia about loving her. Someone always needed saving, some ancient villain always showed up wanting the doppelganger, and Elena always ended up drained of blood by the finale. Two brothers, a haunted car, and apparently an infinite well of dead parents. Supernatural killed Sam or Dean, brought them back, and then killed the other one, over and over, for fifteen years. Heaven's plans failed, Hell's plans failed, God showed up disappointed, and somehow the Winchesters were always the last men standing.
