A plan that backfires: Carlos Barbería Hernando thought that a uniform draws attention away from 22 pounds of cocaine.
On July 13, 2026, Carlos Barbería Hernando attempted to board a flight from Bogotá to Barcelona. What sounds like a routine trip was anything but: Colombian authorities say the Spanish national was carrying around 22 pounds (ca. 10 kg) of cocaine while pretending to be an airline pilot.
A Half-Baked Plan
Hernando apparently hoped that a pilot’s uniform would help him avoid the scrutiny faced by ordinary passengers. The plan, however, was undermined by details that did not quite add up. His uniform fit poorly, while several of his accessories failed to match the equipment typically worn by commercial pilots. His behavior and appearance raised enough suspicion for anti-narcotics officers at Bogotá’s El Dorado International Airport to pull him aside for additional checks.
A body scan revealed several unusual objects beneath his clothing. During a subsequent pat-down, officers cocaine packages taped around his torso and legs. The drugs were allegedly concealed beneath the fake uniform using tape and a support garment.
Investigators later learned that Hernando had actually completed pilot training in Spain several years ago. However, aviation records reportedly did not show that he held a valid pilot’s license or was employed as an active commercial pilot. That background may have helped him assemble a more convincing disguise, but it was not enough to avoid closer inspection.
The suspect was handed over to Colombia’s Attorney General’s Office and faces allegations related to drug trafficking and possession. Authorities are now investigating whether the disguise was an improvised scheme or part of a wider smuggling method used by organized criminal networks.
In the end, the would-be pilot never made it past the airport, and his flight plan was grounded before takeoff.
