Home Alone 2: Lost in New York director calls Trump’s Cameo a “Curse”

Over 30 years after its release, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York is making headlines again, and this time, it’s not about burglars getting hit with paint cans. Director Chris Columbus has now spoken openly about Donald Trump’s infamous cameo – and says he deeply regrets it.
„I Wish It Was Gone“
In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Columbus described Trump’s scene as an “albatross” – a kind of curse that still hangs over the film to this day. The scene was shot at the Plaza Hotel, which Trump owned at the time. According to Columbus, Trump insisted on being included in the film as a condition for allowing the crew to shoot there. The cameo ultimately made it into the final cut only because test audiences in the theater reacted surprisingly well to it.
Trump Responds – Columbus Pushes Back
Trump didn’t stay silent. On his platform Truth Social, he claimed that Columbus and his team were practically begging him to appear in the film. “I was very busy and didn’t want to do it. They were very nice – but above all, persistent,” Trump wrote. “I agreed, and the rest is history!”
Chris Columbus quickly responded, saying, “He claims I’m lying – but I’m not.” The director made it clear he would never beg a non-actor to be in a movie. “But we were desperate to get access to the Plaza Hotel,” he added.

Where Politics Meets Pop Culture
Even though Trump’s brief appearance in the film only lasts a few seconds, it has become one of the most talked-about moments in the sequel over the years. Whether the scene will remain in future versions or possibly be cut is still unknown. One thing’s certain: it has become a lasting part of the film’s public legacy.
