A duck and a Golden Retriever have become best friends, and everyone loves it.
This heartwarming story proves that healing often comes from the most unexpected places. For a family in New York, a duck named Louie was only supposed to be a temporary guest—instead, he became an official family member and gave a struggling Golden Retriever named Barley a new lease on life.
A Duck Becomes Part of the Family
Justin and Tori Cannarelli live on Long Island with their two children, Cameron and Charlie, their family dog Barley, and now, Louie the duck. They never anticipated that a waterfowl would end up becoming a permanent fixture in their household.
Louie originally hatched as part of a science project in a local elementary school classroom. The Cannarellis, who were searching for a duck for Justin’s garden center, found Louie via Facebook Marketplace. Tori brought him home assuming he would stay briefly, but a unique bond quickly formed between Louie and the family’s Golden Retriever.
Some time earlier, Barley had developed severe health problems and began suffering from seizures. Although medication successfully managed the condition, the side effects took a heavy toll. The once energetic and playful dog became withdrawn and lethargic.
“She had simply lost her spark,” Tori recalled. Barley was no longer her old self, and the family worried her joyful personality was gone for good. That is, until Louie arrived.
Louie Brings Back Barley’s Joy
As Louie settled in, he began following Barley around the house, gently pecking at her paws and inviting her to interact. Gradually, Barley responded—playfully chasing the duck, cuddling beside him, and spending hours by his side.
Before long, Barley was visibly transformed. She began wagging her tail again, running through the yard, and showing her old self. “She started smiling again,” Tori shared. To the Cannarellis, it was clear that Louie had helped their dog rediscover her happiness.
Today, Barley and Louie are practically inseparable. Whether they are wrestling in the grass or relaxing side-by-side on the floor, the two are constant companions.
While veterinary science might not be able to definitively explain the psychological impact of their bond, the Cannarelli family doesn't need proof. For them, the evidence is in front of their eyes: a duck brought in for a temporary visit ended up saving their dog's spirit.
