The Backrooms have been an important part of internet culture for many years. It started out as a simple post on 4chan: clipping through the world you know and ending up in a horrifying maze of yellow 70s wallpaper, wandering around and if you're lucky you survives. Now, after stories, YouTube series, games and more the internet classic is getting its own movie.

The Backrooms Movie

The first teaser for THE BACKROOMS recently gained a lot of attention on social media. Instead of having a traditional trailer that shows the actors or part of the story, this teaser rather conveys a feeling: First, it shows a regular room. As the camera slowly goes through the floor, it shows more levels and finally ends with the well-known empty room covered yellow wallpaper.

Though this is a very simple way of teasing the movie, the internet immediately got excited. Not only does a story that so many people are familiar with and hold close to their hearts finally get the recognition it deserves, the way it is done feels perfect.

Between Hype And Speculations

Especially Twitter seems very excited to see this story come to life. The trailer now has Millions of views and many people started sharing their thoughts and speculations surrounding the contents of the movie. While the trailer only shows the iconic first level of the backrooms, people hope it will show more of the other classic levels that feel like liminal spaces:

This sort of hype is also very reminiscent of Iron Lung, a movie that YouTuber Markiplier created based on an indie game he played on his channel years ago. As soon as you get the internet really interested in something, they will support your ideas. A few years ago, YouTuber Kane Pixels posted "found footage" backrooms content on YouTube and has gained not only well over 2 Million followers by now, his first backrooms video currently stands at 71 Million views. If you are familiar with the backrooms, you know his videos. Now, he is directing the movie.

We hope to receive more teasers and trailers until the movie's release on May 29, 2026. Until then: What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments.
