Well, it only took over a decade, but Madoka Magica is finally back to make us cry again.

It’s actually happening. 13 long years after the last movie Rebellion, Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Walpurgisnacht: Rising will finally come to theatres.
The long-delayed sequel is set to hit theaters in February 2026, and fans got another real look at what’s coming with a brand new trailer.
You can watch the trailer here.
12 Years in the Making
Yes, it’s been twelve years since the last movie aired.

Fans have been holding out hope ever since the Rebellion movie dropped in 2013 – and when the concept short was shown back in 2015 at the Madogatari exhibitions, people thought the next installment was just around the corner.
Spoiler: It wasn’t.
Things finally got official at the 10th anniversary event in 2021, where Walpurgisnacht: Rising was announced. Then came another wait… and another delay. It was originally supposed to release in 2024, but got pushed back again. Now, with new footage and key art revealed, it’s safe to say: it’s really happening!
Trailer Breakdown: Homura’s Still Suffering (And So Are We)
In the trailer, we can hear Homura’s voiceover (translated from Japanese) set the mood with some possible hints towards the plot of the movie:
“Yes… Even if this calamity has no name, I know the term used to describe this phenomenon. A fusion of multiple witches. An accumulation of curses beyond imagination. Once, people called it Walpurgisnacht.”
It looks like she’s the only one who remembers the events of Walpurgisnacht from previous timelines and the other girls are clueless about it.
In the promotional material, we also get a closer look at two new magical girls that have been teased in previous trailers and still, nobody knows who they are.
Theories range from “Homura’s puppets” to “fragments of old witches” to “just new characters, calm down.” Their new designs are beautiful, and probably tragic. We wouldn’t expect anything less.
Madoka’s New Look (And That Poster)
The new key visual is gorgeous and packed with symbolism.

Madoka has a completely new outfit, featuring a skirt that seems to nod to the Law of Cycles, and she looks... intense.
No more soft smiles, this Madoka is serious.
Yes, the other magical girls of the group also feature a new look. And yes, it will all be merchandised to oblivion.
But also, there’s a chance the new looks are part of the story, we will have to see.

In fact, the whole poster feels packed with meaning. Some fans noticed the pose of Homura and Madoka is similar to Michelangelo’s Creation of Adam (which has been parodied endlessly). Whether that was intentional or not, it totally fits the whole "god, humans and devils" vibe the series leans into.

Oh – and there’s also some newly released art of Homura and Madoka from AnimeJapan 2025, that fans are already saying will make a perfect poster. Clear some space on your wall.
Now excuse us while we watch the trailer 10 more times to look for details... As for you, prepare for more emotional trauma coming in February 2026 and stay safe until then!
In case you are still shaking from the excitement of the news, be sure to let all these thoughts out in the comments! :)
