A newborn has been given a fitting fast-food nickname following his birth at an unusual location.
A couple rushing to the hospital for the birth of their child ended up making an unexpected pit stop at KFC after their baby decided he simply couldn't wait.
Katie Murphy and her partner Stephen Kirby were driving to the hospital in Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England, on August 29 when Murphy suddenly realized that their son was on his way.
The couple had already visited the hospital earlier that day after Murphy began experiencing contractions. However, they were sent home at around 4 p.m. after being told it was still too early for the baby to arrive.
By around 9 p.m., the contractions had continued, so the couple decided to make the roughly 30-minute drive back to the hospital. But about halfway through the journey, Murphy told Kirby that she could feel the baby coming.
Dad Helped Deliver the Baby At KFC
Kirby immediately called emergency services and began looking for somewhere to stop. He eventually spotted a KFC restaurant that the couple regularly visited and pulled into its parking lot.
The couple didn't have much time to wait for help. Before an ambulance could arrive, Murphy gave birth to their son inside their car at approximately 9:35 p.m.
Murphy described how the event unfolded in an interview with SWNS, stating:
When the ambulance dispatcher was trying to locate our location, the only place we could find was the KFC. As my partner pulled into the car park, and as he made his way round to the passenger side and opened the door, he caught my son just in time.
Kirby rushed around to the front of the vehicle and helped deliver the baby, with paramedics arriving roughly five minutes later. Both mother and newborn were then taken to the hospital. Thankfully, the unexpected delivery went well, and Murphy said her son was healthy and happy.
The newborn was named Cody, but the family quickly came up with another name that was particularly appropriate given where he was born.
Meet "Colonel Cody"
Because Cody was born in the parking lot of KFC, his parents decided to give him the nickname "Colonel Cody", a playful reference to Colonel Harland Sanders, the founder and famous face of the fried chicken chain.
Murphy joked, "It was decided that we have to take him to KFC for his first birthday and get him his first weekend job there."
KFC also got involved in the unusual story. A spokesperson sent the family "bucket loads of love" and said KFC would provide merchandise and vouchers to help them celebrate Cody's memorable arrival. The company also said it looked forward to welcoming the family back for a meal.
