It’s hard to imagine walking through a home and not finding at least one piece of IKEA furniture somewhere – yet the story behind the founder of the Swedish retail giant is not only fascinating, but also marked by controversial aspects. Today, the business world remembers Ingvar Kamprad as one of the most influential entrepreneurs of the 20th century. Kamprad, who died in 2018 at the age of 91, founded the furniture company IKEA and built it into a global corporation. At the same time, his biography is among those entrepreneurial stories that also contain difficult political chapters.

From Early Ideas To The Founding Of IKEA

Ingvar Kamprad was born on March 30, 1926, in Småland in southern Sweden and grew up on the family farm Elmtaryd near the village of Agunnaryd. Even as a child, he showed remarkable entrepreneurial talent.

At just five years old, he began buying matches in bulk and reselling them for profit. Later, he also sold seeds, Christmas cards, and pens. This early interest in trade shaped the course of his life.

In 1943, Kamprad founded IKEA at the age of 17. The company name is an acronym made up of his initials and those of his family farm and hometown: Ingvar Kamprad, Elmtaryd, Agunnaryd.

Originally, the company sold a variety of goods via mail order. Only later did IKEA focus on furniture. The decisive innovation came in the 1950s with the introduction of flat-pack furniture, designed to be assembled by customers themselves. This concept significantly reduced transport costs and made furniture more affordable for many people.

In the following decades, IKEA expanded globally and grew into one of the largest furniture companies in the world.

Business Philosophy

Kamprad’s business philosophy was based on several core principles, including functional design at affordable prices, efficient production and logistics, and a frugal approach to resources.

He himself lived a relatively modest lifestyle for many years, despite being one of the richest people in the world. This simplicity was often presented as part of IKEA’s corporate culture.

From the 1960s onward, IKEA began a strong international expansion. Stores first opened across Europe, later followed by North America, Asia, and many other regions. Today, IKEA is present in numerous countries and is one of the best-known global brands in furniture and home furnishing.

Links To Swedish Fascism

A less well-known but historically significant chapter of Kamprad’s biography concerns his connections to nationalist and far-right movements in Sweden during his youth.

In the 1940s, Kamprad was for a time a member of an organization that sympathized with Swedish National Socialism and maintained contacts with far-right circles. Historical research later also confirmed his personal acquaintance with the Swedish fascist leader Per Engdahl.

This past became publicly known in the 1990s and sparked international debate. Kamprad responded with a public statement describing his former associations as “the greatest mistake of his life” and distancing himself from them.

He repeatedly stated that his political views from his youth were wrong and that he later fully abandoned them. In letters to employees and in interviews, he expressed regret over those connections.

Historians still view this part of his biography as an example of how complex the life stories of many figures from the World War II era can be.

More Than A Furniture Magnate

Ingvar Kamprad was married and had several children. For many years, he lived outside Sweden for tax reasons, but later returned to his homeland.

He died on January 27, 2018, in Småland at the age of 91, leaving behind a company that supplies millions of people worldwide with furniture and home solutions. His business ideas fundamentally changed the furniture industry and made modern design accessible to a much broader public.

At the same time, his biography remains an example of how major economic achievements and problematic historical chapters can coexist. To this day, Kamprad’s name stands both for one of Europe’s most successful business stories and for a past that continues to be critically examined and debated.
