The trading card business has been growing for years and it seems it has reached a new peak: Logan Paul sold his most prized Pokémon card for over $16 million. While many would probably expect some Charizard card to maybe be the most sought after Pokémon card, the rarity of this one is what makes it so popular.

The Business Around Trading Cards

Collecting, buying and reselling trading cards, especially Pokémon cards, has been a popular hobby for a long time now. While some already collected those cards as children, others just recently jumped onto the trend, as the trading card business started exploding in recent years. In fact, it has grown so much that card shops are frequently getting robbed. If you want to know more about that, click here: $100,000 Worth Of Pokémon Cards Stolen – What Could That Mean For Fans?

While my own most expensive Pokémon card currently sits at a not-so-impressive 4€, other cards go far beyond that price. According to CNN, YouTuber Logan Paul purchased the Pokémon card Pikachu Illustrator for over $5 Million about five years ago, and it seems as though that turned out to be an excellent investment: Now, this very card sold for over $16 Million at an auction.

The card that got sold was a PSA 10 Pikachu Illustrator, meaning a very rare card in pristine condition. It is actually a card that was never in a regular card pack: according to Logan Paul, there are only 39 copies in the world and you could only get it by participating in a Pokémon illustration contest. He stated:

This card couldn't be bought. It was earned.

The final price in the auction was $16,492,000 – a sum so large that most people can not even really grasp it. Since that was officially the most expensive trading card transaction in history, he even received an official Guinness World Record title for it.

While the YouTuber has often posted about his interest in Pokémon cards, his Pikachu Illustrator seemed especially dear to him. Not only is it protected by a case, he also added a necklace to it so he can wear it as jewelry.

The last time a known media personality gained this much attention for purchasing or selling a trading card was when Post Malone acquired the most expensive Magic: The Gathering card.
