Resident Evil Director Thinks A Giant Baby Is the Franchise's Scariest Monster

The Resident Evil franchise has plenty of creatures, but one stands out for the movie's director.

The giant infant from Resident Evil Village is the terrifying pinnacle of the entire franchise, at least according to upcoming Resident Evil film director Zach Cregger.

During a promotional event for his upcoming movie adaptation, Cregger revealed that the creature rattled him so badly he had to put the controller down and grab some candy to decompress before jumping back in.

The sounds that it makes are so f***ing scary.

Players confront the grotesque monster deep inside House Beneviento. Stripped of all weapons and gear, protagonist Ethan Winters must navigate the pitch-black basement while evading a colossal, wailing newborn that stalks him through the hallways.

Why Zach Cregger Couldn't Handle House Beneviento

Cregger noted that while he usually has a high tolerance for horror, playing Resident Evil Village in PlayStation VR2 took the tension to an unbearable level.

There's this gigantic baby that is chasing you through the dark. [...] I'm in virtual reality, and I'm in the garage, and I'm having a full-blown panic attack.

In a separate interview with PlayStation, he expanded on why the encounter completely broke his composure:

It was the only time playing a video game I've ever actually just noped out and taken a break. I was just like, "This is too intense."

Unlike standard franchise boss fights where players can fight back with an arsenal of weapons, the sequence forces players into a helpless, desperate game of hide-and-seek—one that clearly left a lasting mark on the filmmaker.

Proving His Survival-Horror Credentials

Cregger has consistently championed his long-standing passion for the franchise, citing the original Resident Evil 2 as his gateway into the series and Resident Evil 4 among his personal favorites. Crucially, he emphasized that his goal is to translate the claustrophobic dread of survival horror to the big screen rather than merely regurgitate existing game plots.

To keep his vision untainted, Cregger deliberately skipped watching previous Hollywood live-action films, choosing instead to craft a grounded adaptation peppered with genuine gaming lore and deep-cut Easter eggs.

His film takes place during the iconic Raccoon City outbreak alongside the timeline of Resident Evil 2. The story introduces Bryan, a medical courier fighting for survival through the collapsing city. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on September 18, 2026.
