Today, the Scottish actor Ewan McGregor is celebrating his 55th birthday. Since the 1990s, McGregor has been one of the most prominent actors in the United Kingdom, establishing a name for himself both in independent cinema and in major Hollywood productions. He became especially well known for his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars saga.

Early Years And Breakthrough In British Cinema

Ewan Gordon McGregor was born on 31 March 1971 in Perth, Scotland. Both of his parents worked in education his mother was a teacher, and his father was also a teacher and later a headmaster.

From an early age, McGregor showed an interest in acting and film. An important influence was his uncle, actor Denis Lawson, who had himself appeared in the original Star Wars trilogy. After finishing school, McGregor studied acting at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

McGregor gained international recognition in the mid-1990s for his role in Danny Boyle’s film Trainspotting. In it, he played the heroin addict Renton a raw and controversial performance that instantly made him one of Britain’s most exciting young actors.

The film became a cult classic and helped define British cinema in the 1990s.

When Star Wars Spoke Again

At the end of the 1990s, McGregor landed a role that would make his career truly global: he played the young Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. His appearances in Star Wars: Episode I–III made him one of the most recognizable faces of the science fiction franchise.

For McGregor, this fulfilled a childhood dream. As a devoted Star Wars fan, he was so enthusiastic on set that he often imitated the iconic sound effects of lightsabers during fight scenes much to the frustration of the film crew.

The humming he produced was also picked up by sensitive microphones, making parts of the on-set audio unusable. As a result, new soundtracks had to be recorded in which Kenobi no longer sounds like an excited child humming with a lightsaber. There are many destinies and heroes among the stars, but only one man managed to make the entire Star Wars universe go silent because of him.

Many years later, McGregor returned to the role, including in the series Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Beyond major blockbusters, McGregor has appeared in a wide range of films, including Moulin Rouge! a musical by Baz Luhrmann Big Fish by Tim Burton, and Doctor Sleep, a sequel to The Shining. His career is defined by his ability to excel in both artistic independent films and large studio productions.

Passion For Motorcycles And Social Engagement

Outside of his acting career, McGregor is also known for his passion for motorcycles. Together with his friend Charley Boorman, he undertook several spectacular motorcycle journeys, which were later produced as documentary series: Long Way Round, Long Way Down, and Long Way Up. These journeys took the two across numerous countries and continents.

Ewan McGregor has also been involved in humanitarian work for many years. He serves as a UNICEF ambassador and supports programs for children in crisis regions. As part of this work, he has traveled to countries such as India, across Africa, and the Middle East to raise awareness of children’s living conditions. Environmental issues also play a role in his advocacy, particularly in relation to sustainable mobility and nature conservation.

A Versatile Actor

At 55 years old in 2026, Ewan McGregor looks back on an extraordinary career. From British independent cinema to musical film experiments and one of the most iconic roles in science fiction history, he has continually reinvented himself. His combination of artistic versatility, international success, and social commitment makes him one of the defining acting figures of his generation.
