On March 26, 2026, the death anniversary of US rapper Eazy-E marks 31 years. Although his career lasted only a few years, he remains one of the most influential figures in hip-hop history. As a member of the legendary group N.W.A and as a solo artist, he played a major role in making gangsta rap known worldwide.
A Childhood In Compton And N.W.A.
Eazy-E was born Eric Lynn Wright on September 7, 1964, in Compton. In the 1970s and 1980s, Compton was shaped by social inequality, violence, and conflicts with the police. These experiences would later have a strong influence on his music.
As a teenager, Wright dropped out of school early. To earn money, he was at times involved in criminal activities. However, he later used the earnings from this period to finance his entry into the music industry a decision that would fundamentally change his life.
In the mid-1980s, Wright, together with producer Dr. Dre, rapper Ice Cube, and other artists, founded the group N.W.A. At the same time, he founded the label Ruthless Records, which became an important driver of the new rap movement. In 1988, the group released the album Straight Outta Compton. The work is now considered one of the most influential hip-hop albums of all time.
The songs depicted life on the streets of Compton, police brutality, and social tensions in an unvarnished way. Particularly, the track “Fuck tha Police” triggered a nationwide controversy and at the same time made N.W.A symbols of a new, uncompromising rap generation.
Conflicts Within The Group And Solo Career
In addition to his work with N.W.A, Eazy-E also released his own music. His debut album Eazy-Duz-It was a commercial success and solidified his reputation as one of the most distinctive voices in hip-hop.
His style was characterized by a high, distinctive voice, provocative lyrics, and a mix of humor and street reality. Although he was not always the main songwriter of his songs, he became an unmistakable figure of identification for West Coast rap.
With growing success, tensions within N.W.A increased especially between Eazy-E and Ice Cube, and later also with Dr. Dre. Financial disputes and personal conflicts led several members to leave the group. By the early 1990s, N.W.A had finally disbanded.
HIV Diagnosis And Significance Beyond Death
In February 1995, Eazy-E suddenly became seriously ill. Shortly thereafter, he was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS. Only a few weeks later, on March 26, 1995, he died at the age of 30 in Los Angeles. His early death shocked the hip-hop scene worldwide. Shortly before his death, Eazy-E released a public message warning others about the disease and calling for more awareness about HIV and AIDS.
Despite his short career, Eazy-E’s influence remains enormous. He is still considered a founder of gangsta rap, because with N.W.A he played a decisive role in making gangsta rap a global phenomenon. Through Ruthless Records, he helped promote numerous artists and build the West Coast hip-hop scene. Many later rap stars from West Coast artists to international hip-hop acts cite Eazy-E as an inspiration.
Even more than three decades after his death, Eazy-E remains a central figure in hip-hop history. His music continues to be listened to, his story is told in documentaries and films, and his influence is clearly felt in the development of the genre.
