Turns out decades of rescuing her didn’t even get Mario out of the friend zone.

Mario and Peach’s relationship was often portrayed with Peach as the damsel in distress and Mario as the knight in shining armor. Alongside couples like Link and Zelda, Steve and Alex, or Cloud and Aerith, Mario and Peach have been one of the most iconic video game duos of all time. But now, according to Nintendo, it turns out it was all just headcanon?
Mario and Peach Are Actually Just Friends?!
On the Nintendo Today App, a user recently discovered new information about the relationship between Mario and Princess Peach. Apparently, they are just “good friends”? Really??

The duo that’s always been portrayed as destined to be together – but constantly separated – is officially stuck in the friend zone. What a bummer. Mario and Peach have had a thing going on for a long time. Ever since her first kidnapping in Super Mario Bros., Mario’s been jumping through fire and lava to save her from Bowser again and again. She called him her “knight in shining armor,” and he called her his “special someone.” So yeah – there were definitely feelings.
They clearly care about each other, even if Peach sometimes gets a little annoyed. Like in Super Mario Odyssey, when Mario and Bowser literally fight over her hand in marriage – and she shuts both of them down.
It feels like the biggest situationship in video game history. Mario is obviously head over heels in love with Peach, while she… well, she’s doing her thing. Slay, princess!
