The handheld market is growing stronger again, after the Nintendo Switch paved the way for bigger games, like Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom or Super Mario Odyssey being playable on the go.

The Switch walked so that the Steam Deck could run, making PC gaming mobile and becoming a big success in the process. Now, it looks like PlayStation could follow suit and create a brand-new handheld set to compete with the upcoming Switch 2.

New PlayStation Handheld Device Potentially In Development

Sony was a big player in the last big handheld boom, especially with the much-beloved PSP. Its successor, the PS Vita, was unfortunately so unsuccessful that Sony left the market entirely, leaving all the handheld gaming demand to Nintendo.

It looks like Sony is ready to re-enter the ring, though. According to tech YouTuber Moore’s Law Is Dead, Sony is working on a brand-new portable gaming system. AMD is supposed to be involved in the making of this device, which is set to be at least 2 years away – if it will actually ever come out, which hasn’t been decided yet.

The video suggests, that the device is aiming to run PS4 games, as well as PS5 titles. However, these would need some kind of tweaking to work. This would be the main use for the new handheld, so it sounds closer to a Steam Deck than the Switch.

For now, we will just have to wait and see if this handheld will actually happen and what exactly it will look like. It is definitely an exciting idea, and Sony going back to their PSP ways could potentially be a huge hit.
