Star Wars Outlaw only sold a million copies in its first month

Star Wars Outlaws was absolutely slammed when it launched, but this wasn't just a review-bombing campaign; leaked sales figures suggest the game has been a huge commercial flop.

Although we actually quite liked Star Wars Outlaws (read our review here), a lot of you didn't. This comes as more bad news for Ubisoft, who earlier this week also had to admit to their investors that XDefiant was "falling behind expectations", and the week before were forced to delay AC Shadows.

Star Wars Outlaws was one of the worst-performing AAA games of the year

Star Wars Outlaws sold only 1 million copies in its first month, according to leaked information from Insider Gaming:

Insider Gaming hasn’t been able to learn what the expected sales figure was for Star Wars Outlaws, but we have secured a current sales figure from sources close to the game. At the time of writing [September 30, 2024], Star Wars Outlaws has just ticked over one million sales worldwide.

To put that figure in context, here is how other AAA games performed this year:

  • Helldivers II sold 8 million units in its first month
  • Black Myth: Wukong sold 20 million units in its first month
  • Palworld sold 15 million units in its first month
  • Dragon's Dogma II sold 2.5 million units in its first month
  • Space Marine 2 sold over 2 million units in a single day

As you can see, Star Wars Outlaws performed very poorly for Ubisoft. If the figure of 1 million copies is correct, it will be doubly disappointing given how large of an IP Star Wars is.

We have to wonder whether the Ubisoft brand is simply so tainted at this point that it's putting off potential buyers. Many now assume they will deliver a generic open-world experience, irrespective of what the marketing suggests. Here's to hoping they produce something genuinely innovative soon to turn around the ship.

Did you play Outlaws, and do you think it sucks as bad as these numbers suggest? We honestly had fun with the game, despite a number of flaws.
