Streamers Are Grieving Because One Of The Funniest DbD Memes Is No Longer In The Game

One of Dead By Daylight's biggest memes sadly met its end with the arrival of the game's latest Stranger Things Chapter 2. Streamers are sad to see this go, be it for content reasons or just because it was a fun little gimmick.

It has already been six years since the first Stranger Things chapter made its way into the asymmetrical horror game Dead by Daylight. The chapter introduced Nancy Wheeler and Steve Harrington as playable survivors. With the addition of new perks such as Scene Partner, players unintentionally created one of the community’s most infamous memes.

Steagull, We Will Miss You

The meme originated from Steve’s distinctive scream, which would occasionally play when it was triggered ingame. It truly reached its peak when Nicolas Cage was released as a survivor. Nic Cage introduced the perk Scene Partner into the game, which triggers a scream when the survivor looks directly at the killer. Streamers and players alike quickly equipped this perk on Steve Harrington, giving birth to the legendary “Steagull.”

The name comes from the sound Steve makes; the community likened it to the cry of a seagull, hence, Steagull. Many DbD streamers and community members are sad to see it go. While some found the meme annoying, it was undeniably iconic.

Social media was flooded with posts commemorating Steagull following the release of the new Stranger Things Chapter 2. Behaviour, the Studio behind Dead by Daylight, decided to change Steve’s voice actor for this chapter. Allegedly, the previous voice actor was a member of the development team, which may have influenced the decision to update the voice.

As a result of this change, the infamous scream was removed from the game entirely. Steve now has full voice lines that play during matches, something that was not present before the latest patch.

The Loss Weighs Heavy On Some Members Of The Community

There has even been an online petition, shared by several DbD content creators, as a last-ditch effort to bring Steagull back before the community has to say goodbye for good, at least for some players.

As with any controversial change, there are winners and losers in this story. While Steagull may have been irritating to some, it brought genuine joy to many others. Discussions surrounding its removal are still ongoing within the community, and who knows, perhaps Behaviour will show mercy.

Another meme that actually received recognition from the development team originated from a bug where players would see a random pole on their loading screen. Behaviour eventually patched it out, which sparked yet another wave of mock grief from streamers and players alike. To accommodate the community’s wishes, Jim the Pole is now an official profile picture available in the game.
