The PlayStation 6 as a handheld console? That's what the gaming community is speculating about right now.

First of all, it is important to clarify that this information comes from leaks by YouTuber Moore's Law is Dead (MLID). In the past, MLID has made both correct and incorrect predictions. The community speculates that MLID does indeed have insider sources, but may be misinterpreting them. Therefore, the following information is not set in stone.

MLID had previously leaked that the PlayStation 6 would be released in two versions: a stationary console and a handheld console. This leak is now considered confirmed, and other leakers such as Kepler L2 have also confirmed it.

MLID has now released a video in which he discusses the specs and price of the handheld console, among other things.

The Handheld Is Dockable?

Under the code name “Canis”, the handheld is supposed to be able to play PS5 and PS4 games in addition to PS6 titles. The portable console will apparently be offered in two performance modes: 1080p and 720p. When held in your hand, you'll be carrying around half the power of a PS5, while when docked, it will reach about 75% of the PS5's performance.

Because yes, the handheld will indeed be dockable. This means Sony will naturally be competing with Nintendo, with the Canis being even more powerful than the Switch 2. That will most likely result in exorbitant prices, won't it?

Powerful And Affordable?

In his video, MLID provided a detailed insight into the components of the PlayStation 6 consoles and was thus able to calculate approximate prices. He points out that the prices he quotes will result in a small loss for Sony. This is in line with the reality that consoles always cause losses for companies at first, as companies primarily profit from the sale of games.

MLID was right about the current console generation. His predictions regarding PS5 prices actually came true, which gives him a certain degree of credibility, at least in this regard. MLID has announced the following prices for the PS6 consoles:

  • Playstation 6 "Orion": $549 - $700
  • Playstation 6 "Canis": $399 - $499
  • Playstation "6s Canis": $299 - $399

PS4-Players Are The Target Group

The “6S Canis” variant is probably a slightly less powerful but cheaper version of the handheld. Interestingly, however, all the prices listed are actually quite a bit lower than one might have expected.

According to MLID, the two handheld versions have two main goals: to compete with the Switch and to introduce PS4 players to the new generation. At the time, many players stuck with the reliable PS4 instead of buying the next generation. This makes it difficult for developers in particular to optimize games for newer and older generations.

Would you buy a dockable Sony handheld console for $300? Could the console war be replaced by a handheld war?
