Most people start losing patience in a supermarket after ten minutes in the checkout line. Four MrBeast contestants stayed for 202 days. Their endurance challenge eventually became a mission to clear roughly 4.3 million calories of food, with a shared $1 million prize giving them a very good reason to finish.

Released on October 3, Eat Everything In A Grocery Store, Win $1,000,000 turned more than six months of supermarket living into a roughly hour-long video. MrBeast says it attracted his biggest first-day audience ever. Getting the contestants out of the building, however, required a substantial change of plan.

Four Rivals Became Teammates After 67 Days

The original competition offered $250,000 to the last person remaining inside the store. After 67 days, four contestants were still holding out. MrBeast responded by offering to restock the supermarket and increase the prize fund to $1 million if they could clear its food together. Suddenly, the people they had spent two months trying to outlast became the people they needed to succeed.

Despite the title’s enormous eating challenge, the finalists did not have to personally consume everything. Guests helped work through the stock, while challenges allowed food to be donated and removed from the remaining total. There was also a financial incentive to keep an eye on expiration dates: calories lost to spoilage counted against the prize.

The challenge finally ended on day 202, with almost all the food cleared and 6,614 calories recorded as waste. The advertised million-dollar pot was shared between the four finalists and subject to deductions. It had taken more than six and a half months to reach that checkout.

The Payoff Went Beyond a YouTube Record

One of the finalists, Juan García, became a fan favorite during the marathon. The 56-year-old Mexican immigrant and father of six entered alongside his son Ángel, who eventually left to return to school. García stayed, winning viewers over with his patience and warmth toward the other contestants. His rewards included $248,346, a truck and an excavator for his business, plus a ring for his wife. He has said he wants to build a home for his family.

For MrBeast, the finale delivered another audience milestone. On October 4, he announced that it had become his most-viewed upload in its first 24 hours, with more than 70 million views reported during that period. He also said viewers had collectively watched more than a billion minutes, averaging over 20 minutes each.

The money explains why the contestants stayed. García’s plans for his family help explain why viewers cared whether they finished. After 202 days, leaving a supermarket meant being able to afford a very different life outside it.
