After 15 Years of videos on YouTube, the Gaming Historian now calls it quits after feeling burned out and lacking motivation for new projects.

The End Of An Era

Norman Caruso, also known as the Gaming Historian has spent the last 15 years making documentary-style videos about video games and consoles, telling their stories from development to release. He currently has over 1 million subscribers.

On April 3, he uploaded a video titled "Thanks for Watching", announcing his departure from YouTube after 15 years of uploading videos.

Today, I’m announcing I will no longer be making Gaming Historian videos. There’s nothing dramatic behind it, I promise.

He says he realized that he lost his spark with YouTube. After finishing one of his biggest projects ever – his "The Story of The Oregon Trail" video – in 2024, which took him years to make, he just felt exhausted.

I was burned out. The thought of starting a new project felt overwhelming, and at the same time, I felt like I was neglecting other parts of my life.

But not wanting to quit immediately, he started doing YouTube part-time while waiting and hoping for the motivation to spark again. Sadly, that never happened. He says the "itch to make a new video" never really came back to him.

He attempted to start another project but felt like his "heart just wasn't in it" and he didn't want to release a video that he thought was lacking. That's when he decided to move on from the Gaming Historian.

This next project was supposed to cover the 1982 case between Universal Studios and Nintendo, where Universal Studios sued Nintendo for their new character "Donkey Kong" being to similar to Universal's "King Kong". Nintendo won the case. Caruso had already spent months reading and compiling documents from the National Archives and decided, as a parting gift, to upload the files including game design documents, courtroom testimonies, and sketches from Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto to the Internet Archive.

The YouTuber will not be uploading videos anymore. His channel and all his videos however, will stay online for viewers to enjoy. Moreover he will also continue the podcast "An Old Timey Podcast" he has with his wife.

He thanks his viewers for their support and they still continue support him even with his decision to leave. The comments seem sad to see him go but understanding of the situation and are wishing him well.

End of an era. Thank you for your contributions to gaming history.
This is some of the highest quality gaming content on the platform. Thank you for what you've done.

And so, the Gaming Historian ends his last video with:

And with that, there is only one thing left to say. Thanks for watchin'!
