In an era where influencers livestream their daily lives to millions of viewers, concerns over privacy and online safety continue to grow. Real–time content creation has blurred the line between public and private life – sometimes with deadly consequences.

Streamers share their real–time location while broadcasting, this can turn into a dangerous scenario for them. Viewers who misinterpret their parasocial relationship to the influencer could take advantage of this, turning it into stalking, or even worse.

Most streamers in this situation are defenseless due to a lack of protection for IRL creators. The possible violence is shared online in real time with thousands of people and most streaming platforms react too slowly while screen recordings continue circulating online.

One of the most disturbing examples remains the killing of Valeria Márquez on May 13 of 2025, who was shot during a livestream and passed away while the stream was still going.

Who Was Valeria Márquez?

Márquez was a beauty and lifestyle influencer from Zapopan, Jalisco. Her content focused on beauty tutorials, entrepreneurship and lifestyle. She brought joy to her fans with her positive and authentic personality and even owned her own beauty salon: “Blossom The Beauty Lounge”.

She had over 113,000 followers on TikTok and over 100,000 on Instagram, which quickly rose to around 260,000 IG-followers after her death.

How Did the Attack on Valeria Márquez Happen?

Earlier on May 13, 2025, two men reportedly visited the beauty salon and claimed they had an “expensive gift” for the salon’s owner. Márquez, however, was absent at that time. Later, she addressed the incident during her livestream and appeared visibly nervous and worried. She even stated that she feared they “might want to hurt or kidnap” her.

Later, the two men from before returned to the salon. One of them reportedly asked: “Are you Valeria?” She answered him, and seconds later multiple gunshots were fired during the livestream.

The killer escaped on a motorcycle with his accomplice. More than a year later, the murder of Valeria Márquez remains unsolved.

Public Reactions and Conclusion

Following the attack, nationwide outrage and protests erupted and President Claudia Sheinbaum publicly addressed the case, calling for justice and stronger protection for women. More than a year later there, nobody has been arrested.

Social media was flooded with tributes and demands for accountability of the responsible people.

While her case has become part of larger discussions surrounding cartel violence, femicide and the dangers of online visibility, many people still remember her for who she was beyond the headlines, a young entrepreneur and content creator who built a community through positivity, beauty and authenticity.

Her death not only shocked millions online but also highlighted how vulnerable public figures can become in an era where everyday life is constantly shared in real time.

For many of her followers, Valeria Márquez is no longer just a viral news story, but a reminder that behind every livestream is a real person with a life, ambitions and a future that can never be replaced.
