Epic Games has launched a new tournament mode for Fortnite's competitive scene in Chapter 3, Season 1. The tournament mode is called "Lightning Cup" and is different from the other competitions in the Battle Royale. But let's take a closer look at the new tournament mode...

What is the Lightning Cup?

In a series of tweets, Fortnite Competitive has explained in detail what the Lightning Cup is all about. Epic is looking to host regular Lightning Cups this season to fill the weekly tournament schedule. Formats, game mechanics, and weapons may change from cup to cup!

When Is The Next Lightning Cup Taking Place?

The next Lightning Cups are happening on these dates:

  • "Target Practice" - Duo Lightning Cup: 25 August 2022 at 7:00 PM CEST

What's The Format Of The Lightning Cups?

There is a wide variety of formats for the Lightning Cups:

"Target Practice" Lightning Cup

This Lightning Cup will utilize alternate scoring rules. Players will earn 1 point on the alternate leaderboard for every 150 player damage and 1 point for every 50 headshot damage.

"Best Of" Lightning Cup

You and your partner can participate in up to 7 matches in 2 hours. However, only your 5 best matches will count towards your ranking on the leaderboard.

"High Score" Lightning Cup

You and your partner can participate in as many matches as you want in 3 hours. However, only your best match will count towards your ranking on the leaderboard. Also, you can switch duo partners during this event to try and get an even higher score!

As with any Cup, points are awarded for elimination and placement.

"Zero Build" Lightning Cup

You will need three more mates for this Lightning Cup. It also takes place in Fortnite's new "Zero Build" mode. That means you have to concentrate on your aim and find cover elsewhere.

Highscore - "Eliminations Only" Lightning Cup

This Lightning Cup is being played in the "Highscore" format – only your team's best match counts. There are no points for the ranks you end up in, only your eliminations count!

"Architect" Lightning Cup

This Lightning Cup is being played by the "Architect" rules which means not only you but also other players are able to edit your structures.

"Starting Loadout" Lightning Cup

This Lightning Cup will utilize the "Starting Loadout" game rule. Each player will start with a "Striker Burst Assault Rifle", "Striker Pump Shotgun", "Stinger SMG", a pair of "Floppers", and a stack of "Small Shield Potions"!

"No Sweat" Lightning Cup

This laid-back lightning cup will use normal competitive Battle Royale game rules.

"Wild Storm" Lightning Cup

This Lightning Cup will utilize new or varied storm behavior at various phases of gameplay.
