Valhalla was there to serve the iconic role that Blood Gulch and Coagulation had served in Halo 1 and 2 respectively, and although it was not as strong as its predecessors, Valhalla is still a great map. A good size for larger teams and vehicles, Valhalla was perhaps best suited to capture the flag. | © Microsoft

To see High Ground place third on this list may come as a surprise to some, and I'll admit there's a little bias here. Some of my favorite games in Halo 3 were High Ground matches - DragonFury to my right, Afrosamurai227 to my left - it was time to open the gate beneath the turret and get that flag! | © Microsoft

2. Guardian

For many, this would perhaps place first rather than second, and I wouldn't oppose that too strongly, it's an incredible map. Guardian was just the right size, it offered tunnels and corridors to try and escape through, and a central platform for when you felt more confident. I think any self–respecting Halo 3 fan knew this was coming when they saw Guardian in second place. Yes, Pit is my number one. It was just so well-designed for Halo 3's chaotic multiplayer. It was also perhaps the most versatile map, working as well for FFA Oddball, as multi-team King of the Hill. There were claustrophobic areas, like the room you'd inevitably have to fight for the Energy Sword in, and open corridors, like the Rocket Launchers' spawn, where you get some sweet BR play. Halo 3 will always be remembered, and not just as one of the best shooters, but as one of the best games of all time. It was a golden age for those lucky enough to have experienced it; an unbelievable amount of content for a single game, and all of it free to play with up to four friends, provided you had just one copy. Truly, split-screen will never reach those glorious heights again.
