The Night in the Woods Sequel Has Been Canceled

The long-awaited sequel to indie sensation Night in the Woods is effectively no more, as health complications have forced the development team to stop working on it.

If you're a fan of indie games you'll probably have heard of Night in the Woods at some point. The award-winning small-town mystery game featuring cute animal characters and surprisingly heavy story themes was a real hit in the indie scene back in 2017. Its spiritual successor, Revenant Hill, was announced in May of this year, but now it seems that it won't be coming out anytime soon. Or ever, really.

Its developers, The Glory Society, posted an announcement on X (formerly Twitter) yesterday saying as much. According to the post, two key members of the team encountered serious health issues that forced them to step away from the project. And since this was a small-team effort in the first place, they simply don't have the resources to continue working on the game. "For all intents and purposes, this is the end of the development of Revenant Hill," the announcement reads.

Revenant Hill: What's Next?

Unfortunately this kind of thing happens all the time in the indie scene. With small teams and smaller budgets, even minor roadblocks can be enough to grind a project to a sudden halt. That doesn't make it any less disappointing to hear about though. Especially in this case, since Revenant Hill looked very promising and had a team with a great track record behind it! But it seems like there will be no recovering from this setback, unfortunately.

As for what's next for the rest of the team, the announcement mentions that The Glory Society have "decided to suspend operations" and are effectively no more. But who knows, you might one day spot their names in the credits of other great games. They certainly have the talent.
