15 Actors Who Demanded Changes To Their Characters

1-15

Not playing it that way.

Crispin Glover

15. Crispin Glover

Thin Man dialogue in Charlie's Angels essentially vanished because Crispin Glover pushed to play him mute. The character was originally scripted with lines, but Glover argued the silence made him scarier. His only sound in the 2000 film is breathing and the occasional grunt. Sony released the film anyway with barely a word from its creepiest villain. | © Sony Pictures
Benicio del Toro

14. Benicio del Toro

An accent nobody could place became Fenster's whole identity in The Usual Suspects. Benicio del Toro built it himself, mumbling on purpose so his lines were barely legible. Director Bryan Singer reportedly kept the mush intact rather than asking for a retake. The 1995 film's producers apparently didn't fully understand him either, and that confusion made the screen. | © MGM
Reese Witherspoon

13. Reese Witherspoon

Kathryn Merteuil's cruelty in Cruel Intentions got sharper because Reese Witherspoon wanted her own lines. Witherspoon has said she reworked dialogue to make the character colder and more calculating than the script allowed. The 1999 film cast her opposite Sarah Michelle Gellar in the manipulative lead role. Columbia Pictures kept the rewritten edge instead of the softer original draft. | © Columbia Pictures
Jason Isaacs

12. Jason Isaacs

Lucius Malfoy's platinum hair and cane came from Jason Isaacs, not the costume department. Isaacs has said he built the look himself, right down to the walking stick used as a weapon. Warner Bros. cast him across eight Harry Potter films between 2001 and 2011. The wand snapped from Malfoy's cane in Chamber of Secrets was his own idea for the character's menace. | © Warner Bros.
Halle Berry

11. Halle Berry

Halle Berry almost walked off X-Men over how little Storm had to do. Berry has said she told director Bryan Singer she'd quit unless the character got more weight on screen. Twentieth Century Fox released the film in 2000 with an ensemble cast built around Wolverine. Storm's role grew across the sequels, and Berry kept the part through three more films. | © 20th Century Fox
Cropped Bryce Dallas Howard

10. Bryce Dallas Howard

Running from a T-Rex in heels looked absurd, and Bryce Dallas Howard knew it while filming Jurassic World in 2015. She pushed back when directors suggested swapping them for flats, arguing Claire would never stop to change shoes mid-crisis. Universal kept the heels in for the entire chase sequence. The internet argued about it for months, which was sort of the point. | © Universal Pictures
Chris Hemsworth

9. Chris Hemsworth

Four words changed the tone of an entire franchise: "make Thor funnier, please." Chris Hemsworth pushed Taika Waititi toward improvisation on the set of Thor: Ragnarok in 2017, pulling the character away from the brooding version seen in earlier Marvel films. Whole chunks of dialogue came from unscripted takes between Hemsworth and Waititi himself. The gamble paid off enough that Marvel never wrote Thor as a straight dramatic lead again. | © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
Michelle Rodriguez

8. Michelle Rodriguez

Letty Ortiz was written to cheat on Dominic Toretto in an early draft of The Fast and the Furious. Michelle Rodriguez refused the storyline outright in 2001, telling producers it didn't fit a character built on loyalty. Universal cut the subplot rather than lose her from the cast. Letty's devotion to Dom became the emotional spine of the entire franchise afterward. | © Universal Pictures
Emma Watson

7. Emma Watson

A corset seems like standard costume drama gear, but Emma Watson said no to one for Beauty and the Beast in 2017. She argued Belle needed to move, run, and ride a horse without being cinched into period-accurate stiffness. Costume designer Jacqueline Durran redesigned the dress around function instead of tradition. Disney's version of Belle ended up closer to the animated original than anyone expected. | © Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures
Tom Cruise

6. Tom Cruise

Nick Morton wasn't supposed to carry quite this much screen time in The Mummy. Tom Cruise, also a producer on the 2017 film, pushed for expanded scenes that widened his own role within Universal's planned Dark Universe. The studio had envisioned an ensemble franchise stretching across multiple monster movies. Cruise's reshaped part unbalanced the film so badly that the entire Dark Universe plan collapsed before a second installment. | © Universal Pictures
Robin Hood Prince of Thieves

5. Alan Rickman

Alan Rickman turned the Sheriff of Nottingham into something closer to a tantrum than a threat in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. He improvised lines like "cancel Christmas" on set, against the script's straighter villain. Kevin Costner reportedly wasn't thrilled at getting upstaged in his own movie. Warner Bros kept every bit of it in the final cut. | © Warner Bros
Cropped Kramer vs Kramer

4. Meryl Streep

Three words changed the ending of Kramer vs. Kramer: "give me time." Meryl Streep pushed Robert Benton to rewrite Joanna Ramsey's courtroom monologue so the character sounded less like a villain and more like a woman drowning. Dustin Hoffman clashed with Streep constantly during filming in 1979. The rewritten scene became the emotional center Columbia Pictures built the marketing around. | © Columbia Pictures
Samuel L Jackson

3. Samuel L. Jackson

Mace Windu carries a lightsaber no other Jedi in the franchise ever gets. Samuel L. Jackson asked George Lucas for a color that would let him spot himself in crowded battle scenes. Purple made the cut for Attack of the Clones in 2002 and stayed through Revenge of the Sith. Lucasfilm had never given a single character that kind of visual claim before. | © 20th Century Fox
Leonard Nimoy

2. Leonard Nimoy

A gesture with no dialogue ended up defining half of Vulcan culture. Leonard Nimoy invented the nerve pinch for a 1966 episode of Star Trek because he thought Spock punching people looked wrong for the character. Gene Roddenberry never wrote it into any script. NBC's writers simply started building scenes around it once Nimoy had done it once. | © NBC
Mike Myers

1. Mike Myers

Mike Myers walked away from Shrek after recording the entire role with his own voice. He'd already finished a full pass before deciding Shrek needed a Scottish accent instead, inspired partly by his mother. DreamWorks had to scrap those sessions and start over at real expense. The reshoot cost the studio an extra four million dollars. | © DreamWorks Pictures
