Ranking All 30 One Piece Arcs (So Far) From Worst to Best

1-31

Ignacio Weil Ignacio Weil

About

About this ranking

As always, I want to remind you that this list is subjective, and many of these arcs might not be in the position you would like them to be, but I promise to be as objective as possible.

Additionally, I decided not to include some of the "Post-War" arcs, as I believe they function more as pauses between arcs or epilogues to some of them. But trust me, I decided to include very short arcs anyway, because we classify them not by their length but by their quality; otherwise, Wano would win... | © Toei Animation

Syrup Village

30. Syrup Village

It’s a reality that Usopp is one of the least beloved members of the Straw Hats, although I loved him. However, his introductory arc is heavy and slow, not to mention that it introduces characters who seem like they won’t reappear or have any future impact on the plot. Definitely the kind of arc that we have to "endure" rather than "enjoy." | © Toei Animation

Little Garden

29. Little Garden

If there's something most fans can agree on, it’s that Little Garden is... well, a bit hard to digest. Not only does its plot feel unnecessary and irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, but it also features villains who are more weird than funny or intimidating, and the story between the two giants feels forced and somewhat ridiculous, to be honest. | © Toei Animation

Fish Man Island

28. Fish-Man Island

Oh, how I hate Fish-Man Island, from Sanji’s joke about drowning in his own blood because of the many mermaids, which starts off funny but overstays its welcome, to a villain who feels like “we have Arlong at home.” Seriously, at this point, the Straw Hats are so overpowered that the danger from past arcs doesn’t really feel present. I think it was a bad arc to show us what our heroes are capable of after the 2-year skip. | © Toei Animation

Skypiea

27. Skypiea

Oh, how I hate Skypiea. Wait, didn’t I say that before? It’s as sluggish and heavy as Fish-Man Island, and although its main villain is (barely) more interesting, mostly because he has one of the best expressions in the entire series, the reality is that the color palette and the world around it feel so uninspired, and that says a lot considering it’s an island in the sky. | © Toei Animation

Orange Town

26. Orange Town

The truth is, Orange Town is right in the middle of classic One Piece, and that’s not a bad thing. It introduces minor dangers for characters who haven’t been fully developed yet, the classic comedy that is characteristic of the early series, and of course, it introduces us to Buggy. There’s not much more to add, as it’s still a very short arc, and if it has such a low rating, it’s due to its limited relevance. | © Toei Animation

Loguetown

25. Loguetown

Loguetown suffers from the same issues as Orange Town, but there are some standout moments that make it worth watching, such as Zoro's encounter with the cursed katana, and we also meet Smoker. But the most important thing for me is that, at the moment of being almost executed, we get a deeper insight into Luffy's personality and his attitude towards death. | © Toei Animation

Baratie

24. Baratie

I have to admit that I'm not a big fan of Baratie, mainly because Don Krieg is one of those villains who could have been more interesting than he actually was. However, not only are we introduced to Sanji, but also to Mihawk, which gives Zoro a clear goal of the level he needs to reach, something that we are still seeing how it will unfold to this day. | © Toei Animation

Reverse Mountain

23. Reverse Mountain

It’s true that Reverse Mountain is not very memorable in retrospect, but try to think about the first time you watched this arc and how exciting it was to reach the Grand Line for the first time. Additionally, the mystery of having a giant hollow whale with a doctor living inside is interesting, not to mention that it’s the beginning of what will soon be the Alabasta arc. And this arc will pay off later with the relationship between Brook and Laboon! | © Toei Animation

Arlong Park

22. Arlong Park

I think that, of all the classic One Piece arcs, none manage to capture those moments of tension, danger, and depravity in the pirate world like Arlong Park. Although it can be heavy in retrospect and might not have the best fights, it’s the first time in the series that we realize One Piece can be deep and devastating when it wants to be, something that Syrup Village attempted and failed to achieve. | © Toei Animation

One piece romance dawn

21. Romance Dawn

I promise I'm not placing Romance Dawn as the best arc of the East Blue to pay homage to the first arc of the first saga of One Piece, but I believe that both Luffy's and Zoro's introductions are among the best in the entire crew. Short, simple, and showcasing their entire personalities in just a few actions. | © Toei Animation

Drum Island

20. Drum Island

I believe the value of Drum Island lies not only in the introduction of Chopper, but also in how it immediately tells us about his past and his relationship with medicine. However, although the villain in this arc is funny, we were reaching a point where we needed more threatening and intimidating dangers, especially considering how serious Don Krieg and Kuro were. | © Toei Animation

Thriller Bark

19. Thriller Bark

Listen, I'm a goth at heart, and everything about Thriller Bark pointed to it being the ideal arc for me. But I think it's one of those cases where it's more about presentation and concept than execution, because they could have done something cool with the resurrected pirates like Captain John, and although Moria's power is terrifying, the character is... well, let's say a bit annoying. But you know what? At least it gave us a new katana for Zoro and the crew's musician, Brook. | © Toei Animation

Amazon Lily

18. Amazon Lily

I think Amazon Lily suffers from being somewhat irrelevant, serving more as a pause between two arcs with emotionally devastating moments. However, the introduction of Boa Hancock and her complicated relationship with the Marines gives us a look at the morality of this world that, unlike conventional shonen, is not black and white. There are nuances where difficult decisions must be made to save your loved ones. | © Toei Animation

Whiskey Peak

17. Whiskey Peak

Are you asking me why Whiskey Peak is ranked so high? Easy! Although in retrospect it has little relevance, don’t let that distract you from how fun and fast-paced it is. Here we get a glimpse of how extensive the criminal organization Baroque Works is, and seeing Zoro fight against hundreds of bandits is awesome. Not only that, but we also get a real showdown between Luffy and Zoro. | © Toei Animation

Punk Hazard

16. Punk Hazard

Caesar Clown’s laugh will haunt me forever. I’ve gone from hating it, to loving it, to hating it again. But putting this annoying part of Punk Hazard aside, what’s great about this island is the constant mystery, from the reason why Kin'emon is there, to the creation of the artificial devil fruits in Vegapunk’s laboratory, and the reason why the island is divided into ice and fire... or, rather, magma. | © Toei Animation

Long Ring Long Land

15. Long Ring Long Land

Of all the transitional and less plot-relevant arcs in all of One Piece, none are as fun as Long Ring Long Land. The basis for this arc is the Davy Back Fight, where pirate crews compete to win and lose members of their crew, and each of the activities keeps us on the edge of our seats. It's always fun to see what new event will come next. | © Toei Animation

Jaya

14. Jaya

Jaya is the first One Piece arc that I would call "transcendental" because of its importance to the overarching story of the series. Not only do we have the introduction of Blackbeard and many foreshadows that will become more significant later, but it is also the first island that truly feels like a pirate’s den. It gives you the sense from the start that something bad will happen to Luffy and his friends... | © Toei Animation

Arabasta

13. Alabasta

Alabasta is great. Yes, some people hate it, but don't let those detractors stop you from enjoying this saga. In particular, because it’s the first time the Straw Hats manage to change the course of history and the world permanently. Additionally, even though Crocodile may be one of the weaker Warlords, he remains an intimidating and ruthless villain, much more so than the villains that had appeared up to that point. From the desert aesthetic to the top criminals of Baroque Works, and even the arrival of Nico Robin, everything makes this arc feel like the first cohesive story in One Piece. | © Toei Animation

Levely

12. Reverie

To be honest, what I enjoy most about One Piece is not the journey of the Straw Hats, the epic fights, or even its great comedy, but the world, the political system, and the various connections between nations and characters in this vast universe. That’s where the importance of Reverie lies, an arc where our beloved Straw Hats are not the main focus, but it is very necessary to understand everything that is happening behind the scenes, and how the pieces are moving. | © Toei Animation

Return to Sabaody

11. Return to Sabaody

One of the shortest arcs in One Piece, and honestly it almost cannot be called an arc, but Return to Sabaody shows us the reunion of the Straw Hats after two years of being separated. Seeing the transformation of each member, both in their design and their power levels, is something comforting and exciting at the same time, hard to explain. Additionally, the whole situation with the Straw Hat copycats is very funny and serves as a reflection of what they were before, and how much they have grown. | © Toei Animation

Water 7

10. Water 7

What makes Water 7 stand out above many of the arcs in the Grand Line is the introduction of the government's and the Navy's power, not in their most obvious members, but in how far their hand reaches in the shadows. The revelation that some of the shipwrights were actually CP9 agents who had been infiltrated for years is terrifying, and it makes you doubt many of the characters we have met so far. Not only that, but the division between Usopp and Luffy is the first time there is a real conflict between two crew members. Oh, and this is where we are introduced to Franky. | © Toei Animation

Sabaody Archipelago

9. Sabaody Archipelago

Up to the point of the Sabaody Archipelago, everything has been happy-go-lucky for the Straw Hats. Sure, they have had tough moments and dangerous opponents, but they have come out victorious in all their encounters so far. But the confrontation with the Celestial Dragons puts our beloved crew in a predicament for the first time, with consequences that will forever change who they are, and bring a terrible tragedy for Luffy. The events of this arc will cause them to not see each other for two years! | © Toei Animation

Zou

8. Zou

Besides being a testament to the resilience and loyalty of the Minks, the Zou arc is as mythical and mysterious as it is important to the plot. Although I think Jack deserved better as a villain, being more intimidating in concept than in execution, as it was the first time we saw someone with such an absurdly high bounty, we have the true introduction to the Wano plot and the Poneglyphs. And all of this on top of a giant elephant! | © Toei Animation

Enies Lobby

7. Enies Lobby

Once you’re a Straw Hat, you never stop being one. Nothing demonstrates this like the events of Enies Lobby, where Robin, who has tried to keep the Straw Hats away from her to avoid involving them with the government, breaks down in tears when she realizes that for the first time she is part of a family that will not abandon her. Additionally, it introduces us to the best character in all of One Piece: The immortal Sogeking, or Sniper King, who is definitely not Usopp in disguise. | © Toei Animation

Dressrosa

6. Dressrosa

Ah, Dressrosa, how could I not love you? Besides being a clear reference to Spain, it features possibly the best villain in One Piece, Donquixote Doflamingo. Additionally, the whole plot with the coliseum and its various participants is excellent, being one of the best ways to introduce many characters and their abilities at once. But above all, the reunion between Luffy and Sabo is enough to bring a tear to your eye. | © Toei Animation

Whole Cake Island

5. Whole Cake Island

The reason why Whole Cake Island works is that Big Mom is a terrifying villain. Not just intimidating or dangerous, as we’ve seen before, but the first Emperor of the Sea that the Straw Hats face is certainly something straight out of a horror story, especially with how creepy all the living things dancing around her are. But the greatest value of this arc lies in the devastating story of Sanji, a character I personally wasn’t a big fan of (team Zoro forever), but after Whole Cake Island, I respect and love him like never before. | © Toei Animation

Impel Down

4. Impel Down

The reason why I have Impel Down ranked so high is that it’s a mix of everything that makes One Piece great, from the micro story of escaping a prison to the macro of how it will affect the universe. It’s filled with comedy through the interactions between Buggy and the prisoners, it’s deep and emotional with the relationship between Jinbe and Ace, and it introduces us to a villain that, in all honesty, Luffy was never able to defeat. And although we don’t know what happened to him, he’s probably invincible under the right circumstances. | © Toei Animation

Egghead

3. Egghead Island

Well, it’s a bit of a cheat to put Egghead Island in third place when it hasn’t finished yet, so this arc comes with an asterisk. But why rank it so high? With all the improvements in One Piece animation, and with the revelations that will come according to the manga, this arc promises to be one of the most important and a great start to the final saga. In fact, with what has been revealed so far, we can already see how things are moving... | © Toei Animation

Wano

2. Wano Country

What Wano Country did was set the bar for physical quality in the shonen genre. Not only has the color palette and fluid animation made a huge technical leap, but it’s perfect considering this arc is one of the longest and has the most fights, giving us many opportunities to appreciate it. And that killer theme with Kozuki’s guitar! But even putting all that aside, if we focus on the story, it’s marvelous. A plot that breaks our hearts with certain unexpected betrayals from characters we’ve come to love through various arcs, an unexpected union and division of several captains from the Worst Generation, and a confrontation against not one, but TWO Emperors of the Sea. Wano is the most epic saga so far with all the content it has. | © Toei Animation

Marineford

1. Marineford

But of course, the arc that has touched the hearts of all fans and changed One Piece forever is Marineford. The great battle of the Emperor of the Sea Whitebeard against the Navy to rescue Ace, Luffy’s brother, is as brutal in its fights as it is in its emotional moments. And if I may spoil it, it was the first time we were shown a main character dying, something no one expected. As we tend to divide the series into before and after the 2-year skip, Marineford is the perfect way to end this first part, and it gives us a glimpse of how the series will end. It makes me think that if the ending of the first part feels this epic, obtaining the One Piece won’t be a narrative disappointment. | © Toei Animation
