All Resident Evil Movies Ranked From Best to Worst

1-12

Some of these are top-tier...

Entertainment - October 4th 2026, 15:00 GMT+2
Resident Evil Afterlife 2010

12. Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010)

Resident Evil: Afterlife has loads of the ridiculous action fans have come to expect from the Milla Jovovich era, but the movie often feels more interested in slow-motion gunfights and spectacle than actually telling an interesting story. We'll offer some credit to the film for the prison setting, as it provides some memorable moments with the Executioner Majini. Still, the movie struggles to give its characters much to do beyond surviving one set piece after another. | © Constantin Film/Davis Films/Impact Pictures

Resident Evil Apocalypse 2004

11. Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)

Resident Evil: Apocalypse tries at least to bring the story into Raccoon City. It also introduces recognizable characters such as Jill Valentine and Carlos Oliveira. As a whole, the movie is packed with zombies, monsters, and action, but the plot is fairly thin, and it rarely captures the spine-tingling atmosphere of the games. | © Constantin Film/Davis Films/Impact Pictures

Resident Evil Retribution 2012

10. Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)

Resident Evil: Retribution goes completely overboard with the franchise's action-heavy direction. Alice wakes up inside an underwater Umbrella facility, which leads to a series of strange scenarios that feel more like video-game levels than a traditional movie. The 2012 film is certainly stylish and entertaining, but the story becomes really difficult to take seriously at times. | © Constantin Film/Davis Films/Impact Pictures

Resident Evil The Final Chapter 2016

9. Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016)

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter attempts to wrap up the long-running Alice saga by returning to the Hive, where everything began. It moves at a rather frantic pace and delivers plenty of violence, but the editing and constant action make the movie somewhat difficult to follow. As a conclusion to the six-movie story, however, it does offer a decent sense of finality. | © Constantin Film/Davis Films/Impact Pictures

Resident Evil Welcome to Raccoon City 2021

8. Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City (2021)

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City tries to take the franchise closer to its video game source material. It does a decent job of combining elements from the first two games and bringing characters such as Leon Kennedy, Claire Redfield, Chris Redfield, and Jill Valentine into the same story. The 2021 film has some recognizable locations and creatures, but its rushed storytelling prevents the fan service from having as much impact as it should have. | © Constantin Film International/Davis Raccoon Film

Resident Evil Vendetta 2017

7. Resident Evil: Vendetta (2017)

Resident Evil: Vendetta is essentially Resident Evil turned into an animated action movie, and it embraces that idea completely. Leon, Chris Redfield, and Rebecca Chambers face another bioterrorist threat in a story filled with zombies, monsters, and some really absurd action sequences. It is not particularly subtle, but fans looking for the games' characters and lore will find plenty to enjoy. | © Marza Animation Planet/Kadokawa

Resident Evil Extinction 2007

6. Resident Evil: Extinction (2007)

Resident Evil: Extinction takes the series away from Raccoon City and into a post-apocalyptic desert. As a result, the 2006 film has a noticeably different visual identity from its predecessors. Alice's greater presence and the introduction of a barren wasteland provide some fun ideas, although the story itself is fairly predictable. Still, the film remains one of the more recognizable installments from the original live-action run. | © Constantin Film/Davis Films/Impact Pictures

Resident Evil Degeneration 2008

5. Resident Evil: Degeneration (2008)

Resident Evil: Degeneration is much closer to the games than the original live-action movies. It brings Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield together after a recent T-virus outbreak. Yes, the 2008 film's animation may look dated today, but the movie understands the tone of Resident Evil remarkably well. For fans who wanted a proper game-style story on film, this is the one to watch. | © Capcom/Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan

Resident Evil Death Island 2023

4. Resident Evil: Death Island (2023)

Resident Evil: Death Island is one of the biggest celebrations of the game universe in movie form. Jill Valentine, Chris Redfield, Leon Kennedy, Claire Redfield, and Rebecca Chambers all appear together, which makes it a pretty engaging watch for longtime fans. The plot is fairly straightforward, but seeing so many major characters share the screen is quite a thrill. | © Quebico/TMS Entertainment

Resident Evil 2002

3. Resident Evil (2002)

The original Resident Evil movie remains one of the most distinctive entries in the franchise. Instead of simply adapting one of the games, the film created a completely new protagonist in Alice and placed her alongside familiar elements such as the Umbrella Corporation, the Hive, and the T-virus. Its claustrophobic setting, creepy atmosphere, and memorable laser hallway sequence make it arguably the most entertaining movie in the series. | © Constantin Film/Davis Films

Resident Evil Damnation 2012

2. Resident Evil: Damnation (2012)

Resident Evil: Damnation takes the animated approach even further, putting Leon Kennedy in a war-torn Eastern European setting filled with bioweapons and infected. It has a much stronger connection to the games than most of the live-action movies and gives Leon plenty of room to show off his personality. The action can be somewhat excessive at times, but that is part of what makes it such an entertaining movie. | © Digital Frontier/Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan

Resident Evil 2026

1. Resident Evil (2026)

The latest Resident Evil movie takes the franchise in a completely different direction. It returns to its horror roots that defined the original games rather than continuing the previous live-action storyline. The 2026 film follows medical courier Bryan Hodukavich on his journey to deliver a package to Raccoon City. Its combination of scares, dark humor, and video-game-inspired mechanics makes it phenomenal and arguably the best Resident Evil film of all time. | © Columbia Pictures/Constantin Film/Davis Films

1-12

The Resident Evil franchise has had a long-standing history on the big screen. Since the first movie arrived in 2002, the series has produced Milla Jovovich-led action movies, various CGI adventures featuring original characters, and a new live-action reboot that takes the franchise in a very different direction. With so many movies to choose from, which ones are truly worth a watch? We'll help you out by ranking all the Resident Evil movies from best to worst.
