The 15 Worst Movies Based On TV Shows

1-15

Ignacio Weil Ignacio Weil
Entertainment - October 23rd 2026, 15:30 GMT+2
The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas 2000

15. The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas (2000)

Bedrock has a functioning economy of rock puns, but apparently nobody invested in a decent dating scene. This prequel follows Fred and Barney’s courtship of Wilma and Betty, with Mark Addy and Stephen Baldwin stepping into the animal skins. The elaborate sets give you plenty to inspect whenever the romantic misunderstandings stall, which is often. Turning these familiar married couples into young lovers mostly reveals how much their comedy depended on already being married. | © Universal Pictures

Land of the Lost 2009

14. Land of the Lost (2009)

Will Ferrell arguing with a dinosaur should be an easy sell. Whether it belongs in an adaptation of a children’s adventure series is a separate conversation that Land of the Lost barrels past. Danny McBride brings his reliably grubby energy, while the Sleestaks retain their wonderfully ridiculous appearance. Yet the expensive prehistoric playground mostly hosts loose comic riffs and bodily-function jokes. You can enjoy individual bits without ever feeling that anyone figured out the whole movie. | © Universal Pictures

Inspector Gadget 1999 cropped processed by imagy

13. Inspector Gadget (1999)

Go-go Gadget origin story! Matthew Broderick’s transformation from security guard into mechanical crimefighter supplies an explanation for practically everything except why this needed explaining. The cartoon let a spectacularly incompetent detective stumble through cases while his niece quietly solved them; the movie gets distracted by superhero business, a robotic double, and a romance. Rupert Everett’s fully visible Dr. Claw adds another questionable upgrade. All those extendable limbs, and the adaptation still struggles to grasp the joke. | © Walt Disney Pictures

Cropped a night at the roxbury

12. A Night at the Roxbury (1998)

Those synchronized head bobs deserve their place in comedy history. The family business, romantic complications, and brotherly falling-out attached to them are harder to defend. Expanding the Butabi brothers’ Saturday Night Live appearances into A Night at the Roxbury means making their nightclub rejection routine sustain an actual emotional journey. Will Ferrell and Chris Kattan commit admirably to the idiocy, but the movie keeps interrupting its best asset—gloriously pointless behavior—to insist these men have somewhere to grow. | © SNL Studios

The Honeymooners 2005 cropped processed by imagy

11. The Honeymooners (2005)

Buying a home gives Ralph Kramden a perfectly sensible ambition; trusting his latest money-making scheme remains considerably less sensible. Cedric the Entertainer and Mike Epps bring warmth to Ralph and Ed, whose financial rescue plan involves greyhound racing. The disappointment is how comfortably everything settles into an ordinary underdog comedy. Gabrielle Union and Regina Hall deserve sharper exchanges, and a property once powered by domestic friction now spends too much time finding excuses to visit the racetrack. | © Paramount Pictures

Blumhouses fantasy island msn

10. Blumhouse's Fantasy Island (2020)

A resort that grants your deepest wish has horror built into the brochure. Blumhouse’s Fantasy Island initially understands that, particularly when a guest’s revenge fantasy turns uncomfortably real. Then the separate stories start tangling together, and every explanation demands another explanation to keep it standing. Michael Peña’s Mr. Roarke should be an unsettling guide through other people’s desires. Instead, he’s left managing a holiday package whose supernatural terms and conditions grow more exhausting than its actual dangers. | © Blumhouse Productions

Mr Magoo 1997 cropped processed by imagy

9. Mr. Magoo (1997)

Leslie Nielsen could make a straight face funnier than another actor’s entire pratfall. Putting him under Mr. Magoo’s exaggerated squint wastes that advantage before the jewel-theft plot even gets moving. Pursued by criminals and investigators, this oblivious millionaire wanders through increasingly elaborate hazards while the film practically elbows us to announce each gag. Cartoon physics can make such accidents feel effortless; here, the elaborate staging exposes the labor involved. Nielsen works awfully hard to look unaware of everything. | © Walt Disney Pictures

Baywatch 2017 cropped processed by imagy

8. Baywatch (2017)

The lifeguards know they’re behaving like cops. Other characters point out that they aren’t cops. Then Baywatch proceeds with its criminal investigation anyway, apparently satisfied that acknowledging the absurdity counts as a running joke. Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron make an entertaining pair of competing egos, but their sparring gets buried beneath drug-smuggling business and prolonged gross-out detours. An R rating opens up the vocabulary without doing much for the wit. Even the slow-motion running feels comparatively efficient. | © Paramount Pictures

The Avengers 1998 cropped processed by imagy

7. The Avengers (1998)

Sean Connery threatens the world with weaponized weather, and somehow the forecast still looks dull. Adapting the British spy series gives Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman impeccable clothes and precious little spark as John Steed and Emma Peel. A meeting of villains in giant teddy-bear costumes briefly suggests the right appetite for absurdity. Elsewhere, the disconnected storytelling leaves eccentric details floating without comic purpose. You can reproduce the bowler hat; the flirtation and timing require rather more attention. | © Warner Bros.

Car 54 Where Are You 1994 cropped processed by imagy

6. Car 54, Where Are You (1994)

Protecting a mob witness puts officers Toody and Muldoon into a bigger plot than their old neighborhood sitcom ever needed. David Johansen plays the chaotic half of the partnership opposite John C. McGinley’s rigid straight man, with Jeremy Piven as their endangered charge. That setup could support a scrappy police farce. Instead, the broad characterizations leave little room for surprise, and the frantic business around them substitutes commotion for comic rhythm. Dispatch should probably have sent another unit. | © Orion Pictures

Sex and the City 2 2010 cropped processed by imagy

5. Sex and the City 2 (2010)

Miranda and Charlotte sharing their frustrations about motherhood offers a glimpse of the movie this could have been: funny, candid, and interested in its characters beyond their wardrobes. Unfortunately, their conversation belongs to a sprawling Abu Dhabi vacation dominated by conspicuous luxury and clumsy cultural comedy. Carrie’s encounter with Aidan adds manufactured romantic jeopardy to an already overpacked itinerary. The friendship still has value, but watching it compete with the scenery for attention becomes an unexpectedly tiring holiday. | © HBO Films

Jem and The Holograms 2015 cropped processed by imagy

4. Jem and The Holograms (2015)

Why borrow Jem if you’re embarrassed by the outrageous part? Jon M. Chu’s adaptation turns Jerrica Benton into a shy teenage singer discovered through an online video, leaning heavily on sisterhood, sudden fame, and music-industry manipulation. Aubrey Peeples gives the emotional material some sincerity, and the musical performances offer occasional pleasure. But the cartoon’s extravagant identity games shrink into a much more familiar pop-star journey. Even Synergy becomes a little robot, as though the original needed help being marketable. | © Blumhouse Productions

Knights of the Zodiac 2023 cropped processed by imagy

3. Knights of the Zodiac (2023)

Mackenyu looks ready to carry a martial-arts fantasy; the screenplay seems determined to keep him waiting for one. His Seiya discovers mystical powers and a destiny protecting Athena’s reincarnation, but the adventure spends so much energy establishing its rules that the promised spectacle feels rationed. Saint Seiya thrives on extravagant emotion and mythological grandeur. This version keeps dragging those qualities toward familiar origin-story machinery, leaving its star to supply physical excitement whenever the explanations finally take a breather. | © Toei Animation

Dragon Ball Evolution 2009 cropped processed by imagy

2. Dragon Ball Evolution (2009)

Goku worrying about fitting in at high school tells you how dramatically Dragonball Evolution has misunderstood its assignment. Justin Chatwin’s teenage hero inhabits a conventional coming-of-age adventure decorated with Dragon Balls, familiar character names, and occasional martial arts. Akira Toriyama’s peculiar comic imagination barely survives the translation. Chow Yun-fat injects some playfulness as Master Roshi, but the hurried quest gives everyone little room to register. Even without demanding absolute fidelity, expecting a recognizable personality hardly seems unreasonable. | © 20th Century Fox

The Last Airbender 2010 cropped processed by imagy

1. The Last Airbender (2010)

Aang’s great gift was never just his command of the elements; it was the mischievous warmth that made an enormous responsibility bearable. M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender drains away much of that personality while cramming the animated show’s opening season into a procession of explanations. Friendships get announced rather than developed, and elaborate bending movements struggle to produce convincing excitement. Dev Patel gives Zuko some welcome urgency, but he can’t supply an entire ensemble’s missing emotional life. | © Nickelodeon Movies

1-15

A familiar theme tune can sell a movie ticket, but it can’t do much about the next two hours. Hollywood keeps turning TV shows into movies, hoping our affection for the originals will survive new casts, bigger explosions, and scripts that barely recognize the characters. Sometimes we get a great night at the cinema. These 15 adaptations left us wondering why we’d paid to watch something we wouldn’t have finished at home.
