1. The Hangover (2009)

The blueprint seemed unbeatable: three hopeless men, one missing groom, and a Las Vegas hotel room that looked like it had survived a military coup. The Hangover became a phenomenon, but years of imitation and endless “wolf pack” quoting have drained much of its surprise. The darker jokes now feel meaner than mischievous, while its women barely exist outside the roles of stripper, girlfriend, or furious obstacle. 2. American Pie (1999)

That warm slice of pastry may have entered pop-culture history, but American Pie serves plenty of material that has become harder to swallow. Its infamous webcam sequence turns Nadia’s private moment into entertainment without her knowledge, then punishes her rather than the boys responsible. Other scenes treat sexual humiliation as a necessary teenage ritual, leaving the characters’ occasional sweetness fighting against the movie’s own instincts. 3. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994)

Jim Carrey attacks every scene with the flexibility of a rubber toy possessed by a demon, and that physical commitment remains impressive. Unfortunately, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective builds its climax around revealing its villain’s identity and inviting an entire room to react with disgust. The prolonged vomiting gag once passed as outrageous comedy; today it overwhelms the mystery and leaves an especially ugly aftertaste. 4. There’s Something About Mary (1998)

A zipper accident, an unfortunate substitute for hair gel, and Ben Stiller’s spectacular discomfort made There’s Something About Mary a defining gross-out comedy. Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt sell the glossy romantic fantasy, but the screenplay’s observations about women rarely travel beyond shoes, waxing, insecurity, and male approval. Eddie Murphy playing nearly every member of the Klump family was a technical and comic achievement, especially during the gloriously unrestrained dinner sequence. Yet The Nutty Professor repeatedly turns Sherman’s body into public property, inviting characters and viewers to judge, mock, and discuss it. The story eventually defends his dignity, but only after extracting an enormous number of fat jokes, flatulence gags, and humiliations from him. 13. Sixteen Candles (1984)

The forgotten birthday at the center of Sixteen Candles captures teenage loneliness with the sensitivity that made John Hughes famous. Almost everything surrounding it is considerably harder to defend. Long Duk Dong is reduced to an accent, a gong sound, and a stack of racist clichés, while the intoxicated Caroline is casually handed over to another boy who cannot obtain meaningful consent.
