An alternate America divided between Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan was already a fantastic hook, and The Man in the High Castle somehow made things stranger once parallel worlds entered the equation. The trouble was explaining what any of it ultimately meant. John Smith's story receives a suitably grim conclusion, but the closing scene sends mysterious people walking through the portal without giving viewers much idea who they are or why they've arrived. The cruel joke of Merlin is that its entire premise promises a future the audience barely gets to see. Season after season, Merlin hides his magic while viewers wait for Arthur to finally discover the truth and usher in the legendary Camelot everyone keeps talking about. Arthur does eventually learn his friend's secret — and then promptly dies in the finale. Dexter Morgan getting away with murder was always part of the fun, but there was an obvious question waiting at the end: what happens when he finally has nowhere left to hide? Apparently, he becomes a lumberjack. After Deb is left brain-dead, Dexter removes her from life support, takes her body out to sea, fakes his own death and disappears into self-imposed exile. It avoided both the expected punishment and any real confrontation with what Dexter had become, turning eight seasons of moral reckoning into one deeply strange beard reveal. | © Showtime Networks
Early Sherlock episodes made viewers feel clever just for keeping up with Holmes as he tore through clues at impossible speed. The fourth season decided ordinary murder mysteries were apparently no longer dramatic enough. Killing Eve spent four seasons turning Eve and Villanelle’s obsession into one of television’s strangest, funniest, and most dangerous love stories. The finale finally lets them drop the games long enough to share a genuinely happy moment — and then Villanelle is abruptly shot dead while the pair are swimming in the Thames. Eve survives, screaming into the night, before the enormous words “THE END” appear on screen. Subtle it was not. Fans of Pretty Little Liars spent seven seasons treating every suspicious glance and background prop like evidence in a murder trial. Their reward was Alex Drake: Spencer's previously unknown identical twin from England, secretly operating as A.D. The reveal is gloriously ridiculous television, right down to Troian Bellisario's enthusiastic British accent, but that's exactly the problem. This one hurts precisely because Mindhunter never suffered the creative collapse that usually earns a place on lists like this. David Fincher's serial-killer drama remained methodical, unnerving and unusually confident through two seasons, while quietly building a long-running subplot around the BTK killer. Then it simply stopped. Fincher later explained that its audience didn't justify the show's considerable cost, effectively killing hopes for a third season. No, everyone on Lost was not dead the entire time. The island happened, the crash happened, and the survivors really did spend six seasons pushing buttons, meeting Others and wondering why a smoke monster was judging them. The controversial part was the final season's flash-sideways storyline, revealed as a sort of afterlife where the characters reunite before moving on. Rory Gilmore was once the hyper-organized kid who carried multiple books everywhere because choosing just one apparently constituted poor planning. Watching her drift through A Year in the Life — professionally lost and having an affair with an engaged Logan — therefore landed strangely for viewers who had grown up alongside her. Then came Amy Sherman-Palladino's long-promised final four words: Rory is pregnant. “Not Fade Away” is either a brilliant ending or an act of psychological warfare depending on how badly you wanted another season of Angel. The finale sends Angel and his surviving allies into an alley as an apocalyptic army approaches, only to cut to black just as the battle begins. Thematically, that's perfect: Angel's entire philosophy is about continuing the fight even when victory is impossible. Imagine spending virtually an entire final season at Barney and Robin's wedding only for the finale to announce that they divorced a few minutes later. How I Met Your Mother wasn't finished twisting the knife, either. Tracy, the woman viewers had waited nine seasons to meet and quickly came to adore, dies after building a life with Ted, who ultimately returns to Robin with the blue French horn. Death became remarkably negotiable in Mystic Falls. Vampires returned, witches found loopholes, supernatural rules acquired exceptions, and characters could receive heartbreaking funerals while viewers quietly wondered how permanent this one really was. Nina Dobrev's departure created an even bigger problem, forcing Elena into a magically induced sleep linked to Bonnie's life while the series continued without its original protagonist. Loving Grey's Anatomy has always required accepting that Seattle is apparently the most dangerous place on Earth to practice medicine. Derek died, Cristina left, George died, Lexie and Mark were killed, and Meredith eventually stepped away from being a full-time presence. Yet Alex Karev's departure may remain the most infamous: after years of character growth and a marriage to Jo, he vanished and explained through letters that he had reunited with Izzie and their children. At its peak, The Walking Dead understood that killing a major character only worked because viewers desperately wanted that person to survive. Eventually, the show started treating that anxiety like a renewable resource. Glenn's dumpster fake-out was followed by a season finale that hid Negan's victim until the next premiere, Carl was killed despite remaining central much longer in the comics, and Rick later disappeared from the flagship series altogether.
