The Toy — 15. The Toy (1982)
A rich man buying a Black employee as a birthday present for his son is the actual plot of The Toy. Richard Pryor plays the man being purchased, and the movie treats the arrangement as heartwarming rather than horrifying. Jokes about wealth and class get built on top of an ownership premise nobody involved seemed to question. Splash — 14. Splash (1984)
Tom Hanks falls for a mermaid in Splash, and scientists immediately want to dissect her once they find out what she is. That's played for laughs, along with plenty of gawking at Daryl Hannah's body the moment she grows legs and loses her clothes. The whole rescue-the-girl-from-the-government plot leans on her having zero say in her own fate until a man decides to intervene. Mannequin — 13. Mannequin (1987)
Kim Cattrall plays a mannequin who comes to life only for the man who built her, which tells you everything about whose fantasy Mannequin is really serving. She has no family, no past, no say in the arrangement, just devotion to the guy who sculpted her. Andrew McCarthy gets a manic pixie dream woman who was literally constructed to please him. Short Circuit — 12. Short Circuit (1986)
Five million dollars of military funding built Johnny Five, and Short Circuit spends its runtime asking us to root for government property escaping its own government. The comedy stakes it own emotional bet on a robot's right to personhood, then never lets the humans around it reckon with what that actually means. Ally Sheedy's character falls for a machine's innocence without much thought for the weapons lab it came from. It's a cute idea wrapped around a premise that gets darker the longer you sit with it. | © TriStar Pictures

Romancing the Stone — 11. Romancing the Stone (1984)
Joan Wilder gets kidnapped, threatened, and nearly assaulted throughout Romancing the Stone, and the movie keeps asking audiences to find it charming. Michael Douglas plays a mercenary who bullies her through the jungle, and the script frames his pushiness as chemistry rather than coercion. Kathleen Turner sells the fear and the attraction so well that the imbalance barely registers on first watch. Slow down on a rewatch, though, and the romance looks a lot more like Stockholm syndrome with better scenery. | © 20th Century Fox

Weird Science — 10. Weird Science (1985)
Two teenage boys build a woman on a computer, and that sentence alone tells you where Weird Science is headed. Kelly LeBrock shows up as their creation with zero say in the matter, designed strictly to fix their social lives. The movie plays it as harmless fantasy, but the premise treats a grown woman as a gadget two kids assembled for personal use. White Palace — 9. White Palace (1990)
James Spader plays a rich college graduate who falls for a waitress twice his age in White Palace. The class gap and the age gap both get treated as spice rather than the actual point of friction. Susan Sarandon brings real weight to a role that the script mostly uses for its shock value. The Last Dragon — 8. The Last Dragon (1985)
Bruce Leroy wants to become a martial arts master, and The Last Dragon hands him a plot that borrows heavily from Black culture while filtering it through a very white idea of what that culture should look like. Taimak plays him as sincere and a little goofy, chasing glowing hands and old kung fu movies instead of any real connection to his own neighborhood. Vanity shows up as the love interest running a music video show, which is the most grounded part of the whole thing. Cropped trading places — 7. Trading Places (1983)
A bet between two rich men decides to ruin a stockbroker and elevate a homeless con artist just to settle an argument, and Trading Places treats that as comedy gold. Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd carry it well, but the setup reduces both of their lives to a science experiment run by bored billionaires. Nobody involved faces any consequence for orchestrating financial ruin as entertainment. C. Thomas Howell spends most of Soul Man in blackface, and no amount of context makes that premise easier to sit through. His character darkens his skin to qualify for a scholarship meant for Black students, treating an entire lived experience as a costume he can remove later. The movie frames it as a lesson in empathy, but the mechanism it uses to get there is the exact thing it should be criticizing. A group of Florida teenagers spend the entire runtime scheming to see girls naked in a shower. Porky's treats every woman on screen as either a punchline or a target, and the coach subplot plays statutory stuff for laughs. Twentieth Century Fox had a hit on its hands, and a wave of copycat sex comedies followed right behind it. Revenge of the Nerds — 4. Revenge of the Nerds (1984)
Nerds get bullied, then the movie hands them a hidden camera and calls it justice. Revenge of the Nerds spends its final act on secretly filmed footage of a woman used without her consent, framed as triumph instead of assault. Booger and the gang get the girl, the frat gets humiliated, and nobody in 1984 seemed to blink at what actually happened to get there. Navin Johnson stumbles through The Jerk as a man raised by a Black family who never quite figures out he's white. Steve Martin plays him as pure innocence, but the joke keeps circling back to a Black household treated as a punchline generator. Universal Pictures let the gag run for the whole first act before the plot even gets moving. Sixteen candles and one very unconscious plot point. Molly Ringwald's Sam spends the movie chasing a boy who barely notices her, while a subplot lets the Geek borrow his drunk, passed-out crush for the night and brag about it after. Universal Pictures sold this as sweet teenage romance, and the soundtrack and the mall-era charm made it easy to ignore what the Geek actually does. Five students sit in detention and somehow end up mapping out an entire high school caste system. The Breakfast Club gets credit for taking teenagers seriously, and most of that credit is earned. But Bender's treatment of Claire slides from cruel to predatory and the film asks you to read it as chemistry anyway, right down to that closet scene.
