15 Incredibly Unique Games Everyone Needs To Play

1-15

Nothing else like them.

Superliminal

15. Superliminal (2019)

Perspective is the only tool you get in Superliminal, and the game bends it until a tiny chess piece becomes a full staircase just by walking toward it. Pillar Studios built the whole thing around forced perspective puzzles, the kind M.C. Escher would have loved. Clissa Games and its small team shipped it in 2019 after years as a student project called See. Nothing about the physics makes sense, and that's the entire point. | © Pillow Castle
Scribblenauts Unlimited

14. Scribblenauts Unlimited (2012)

Object creation in Scribblenauts Unlimited runs on a dictionary of over 20,000 words, and typing almost any noun spawns it instantly. Need a ladder, a dragon, or a jetpack made of cheese? Type it and it appears on screen, ready to solve whatever puzzle is in front of Maxwell. 5th Cell built the sequel around Maxwell's sister Lily, giving the sandbox an actual reason to exist beyond chaos. | © Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment
Kenshi

13. Kenshi (2018)

Kenshi throws away the usual RPG safety net entirely. There's no main quest, no chosen one, and Lo-Fi Games spent over a decade building it that way before release in 2018. Characters can lose limbs permanently and keep fighting on prosthetics, or get enslaved and have to work their way free. Chris Hunt made most of the game solo for years before he ever hired a team. | © Lo-Fi Games
Tunic

12. TUNIC (2022)

A fox in a green hood wakes up on a beach with no memory and no language it can read. That's the setup for TUNIC, a 2022 release from Andrew Shouldice that hides its real instruction manual inside the game itself, written in a font nobody can translate. It took Shouldice roughly seven years to finish, working mostly alone before Finji came on to publish. Players had to piece the manual's meaning together collectively online just to understand basic combat. | © Finji
Noita

11. Noita (2019)

Every pixel in Noita is simulated, which means fire spreads, water fills rooms, and acid eats through stone in real time. Nolla Games built the whole world out of falling sand physics, with over a million individually tracked cells reacting to whatever the player does. Mixing wands and spells can kill you just as easily as any enemy can. The developers have a running joke that the real final boss is the player's own build. | © Nolla Games
Return of the Obra Dinn

10. Return of the Obra Dinn (2018)

Sixty corpses and sixty ways to die make up the puzzle at the center of Return of the Obra Dinn. Lucas Pope built the whole game around a pocket watch that replays the moment of each death in frozen monochrome. You're never told anything directly, only shown a body and left to work backward. The 1-bit visual style was modeled on 1980s Macintosh graphics, which makes the murders look almost gentle.
Hi Fi RUSH

9. Hi-Fi Rush (2023)

Chai believes he's the chosen hero the moment an MRI machine fuses a music player into his chest. Hi-Fi Rush ties every hit, dodge, and footstep to the beat without ever announcing it as a rhythm game. Tango Gameworks kept the project secret until its own reveal during the January 2023 Xbox Developer Direct. It shipped the same day it was announced, which almost never happens with games this polished. | © Xbox Game Studios
Mirrors Edge

8. Mirror's Edge (2008)

Faith Connors runs across Glass City rooftops in a world painted almost entirely white, red, and blue. That color coding wasn't decoration. DICE used it to guide players through "runner vision," marking the path forward in red without a single arrow or waypoint. Mirror's Edge came out in 2008 on EA's own budget, a rare first-person game built around not shooting anything. | © Electronic Arts
SUPERHOT

7. SUPERHOT (2016)

A gun sits on the floor of an empty white room, and picking it up is the only tutorial SUPERHOT gives you. Time moves only when you move, so standing still turns a room full of red glass enemies into a frozen puzzle. The idea started as a submission to the 2013 7 Day FPS Challenge before becoming a full release in 2016. Superhot Team funded it partly through a Kickstarter that raised over $250,000.
Cropped Baba is You

6. Baba Is You (2019)

Push the word "rock" next to "is" and "push," and suddenly rocks can be shoved around the level. Baba Is You turns its own rules into physical blocks you shove and rearrange in real time. Arvi Teikari, working under the name Hempuli, built the concept out of a 2017 game jam prototype. Winning becomes less about skill and more about rewriting what winning even means.
Inscryption

5. Inscryption (2021)

Daniel Mullins hid three separate games inside Inscryption, and the card game is the smallest part of it. The first act was built as a standalone demo called Sacrifices Must Be Made before it grew into something stranger. A camera on the cabin wall watches you the entire time, and it's not decoration. By the time the rules change for the second time, "deck builder" stops being an accurate description. | © Devolver Digital
Papers Please

4. Papers, Please (2013)

A stamp reading "DENIED" gets more emotional weight in Papers, Please than most games manage with a full cast. Lucas Pope built the entire thing around a border checkpoint in the fictional country of Arstotzka. Each shift means comparing passports line by line while a family waits on the other side of the glass. The game shipped in 2013 and somehow made bureaucracy feel like a moral trap. | © 3909 LLC
The Stanley Parable

3. The Stanley Parable (2013)

Two endings became nineteen by the time Davey Wreden finished expanding his original 2011 mod into a full release. The narrator never stops talking, and that's the whole joke and the whole threat at once. Walking into the wrong door gets you scolded by a voice that clearly knows more than it should. William Pugh co-designed the 2013 remake, and the two of them built a game whose real subject is the player's own obedience. | © Galactic Cafe
Disco Elysium

2. Disco Elysium (2019)

Harry Du Bois wakes up with no memory of his own name, and that's just the first thing Disco Elysium takes away from him. ZA/UM built the whole game around dialogue and skill checks instead of combat, which was almost unheard of in 2019. Your own intelligence stats argue with you in your head, sometimes literally interrupting mid-thought. Robert Kurvitz wrote the game as a novelist first, and it reads like one. | © ZA/UM
Outer Wilds

1. Outer Wilds (2019)

Twenty-two minutes is all the time you get before the sun exits Outer Wilds' solar system and swallows it whole. Mobius Digital built the entire game around that explosion, then made you live through it on a loop. There's no leveling up and no new gear, just questions about a dead civilization called the Nomai. Alex Beachum first prototyped the time loop as an MIT student project years before it became this. | © Annapurna Interactive
