15 Christmas Sitcom Episodes That Became Classics

1-15

The sitcom season starts.

TV Shows & Movies - November 7th 2026, 19:00 GMT+1
Parks and Recreation 22 Citizen Knope

15. Parks and Recreation — "Citizen Knope" (2011)

Leslie Knope gets suspended from city hall and immediately throws herself into helping a friend instead. Parks and Recreation uses the Christmas episode to prove its real engine was never government bureaucracy, it was people who show up for each other. The handmade scrapbook gift at the end still gets people in the chest. Nobody does earnest quite like this show did. | © NBC
30 Rock 22 Christmas Special

14. 30 Rock — "Christmas Special" (2008)

Dysfunctional holiday specials are their own genre, and "Christmas Special" leans all the way in. 30 Rock turns the production of a TV Christmas show into a disaster involving Kabletown executives, a. puppet, and Jack's frozen family dynamics. Tina Fey keeps the jokes fast enough that you barely notice how sharp the satire actually is. It mocks network Christmas specials while somehow becoming a genuinely good one. | © NBC
The Honeymooners 22 Twas the Night Before Christmas22

13. The Honeymooners — "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" (1955)

A pawn shop window holds the saddest, warmest twist in fifties sitcom history. Ralph Kramden sells his bowling ball to buy Alice a present, only to learn she pawned her own gift to buy him a bowling bag. The Honeymooners rarely slowed down for sentiment, which is exactly why this moment hits as hard as it does. Jackie Gleason plays the realization on Ralph's face like it costs him something. | © CBS
Cheers 22 Christmas Cheers

12. Cheers — "Christmas Cheers" (1987)

Bar regulars don't stop being regulars just because it's Christmas Eve. "Christmas Cheers" keeps the gang at their usual stools, trading gifts and insults in equal measure. Sam's half-hearted scrambling for a present and Diane's quiet disappointment say more about their relationship than any grand gesture could. Cheers understood that the best holiday episodes don't need snow or miracles, just the regular cast being themselves. | © NBC
Schitts Creek 22 Merry Christmas Johnny Rose

11. Schitt's Creek — "Merry Christmas, Johnny Rose" (2018)

Johnny Rose wants one normal family Christmas, and the universe of Schitt's Creek has other plans. Alexis flakes, Moira disappears into a community theater crisis, and David handles stress by overcorrecting into chaos. What saves the episode is how it ends, with the family actually choosing to be in the same room. Four seasons of growth from the Roses, and this is where you can finally feel it. | © Pop TV
Ted Lasso 22 Carol of the Bells

10. Ted Lasso — "Carol of the Bells" (2021)

Ted Lasso spends this episode making sure nobody on his list of sad people stays sad for long. He shows up at Rebecca's door, drags Sam into a surprise reunion, and turns a biscuit box into something that actually means something. The episode leans hard into sincerity instead of jokes, and it works because the show already earned that trust. Christmas specials usually chase a big moment, but Ted Lasso just lets kindness pile up in small ones. | © Apple TV+
South Park 22 Mr Hankey the Christmas Poo22

9. South Park — "Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo" (1997)

A singing piece of poop teaching South Park about the true meaning of Christmas sounds like a dare more than a premise. Mr. Hankey shows up only to Kyle at first, which gets him labeled delusional and nearly institutionalized before the rest of town catches on. The show uses the gross-out joke to sneak in actual commentary about censorship and holiday phoniness. Twenty-six seasons later, this is still the mascot people remember first. | © Comedy Central
Frasier 22 Merry Christmas Mrs Moskowitz

8. Frasier — "Merry Christmas, Mrs. Moskowitz" (1998)

Frasier Crane lies about being Jewish to impress a woman, which is exactly the kind of mess this show built its whole premise around. The lie snowballs into a full fake Hanukkah dinner, with Niles and Martin recruited to keep the act going. Nobody on this show tells a small lie when a disastrous one is available. The dinner collapses in the specific, cringing way only Frasier could stage it. | © NBC
Modern Family 22 Undeck the Halls

7. Modern Family — "Undeck the Halls" (2009)

Phil Dunphy cancels Christmas, or tries to, after discovering the family's been faking excitement over his traditions for years. That one confession sets off a chain reaction through the whole Dunphy-Pritchett clan, each of them hiding some version of the same resentment. Claire's secret, Cam's wrapping paper meltdown, Mitchell's obligation gift, it all piles up into one loud holiday mess. By the end they're back under one roof, proving the chaos was the tradition all along. | © ABC
Community Abeds Uncontrollable Christmas cropped processed by imagy

6. Community — "Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas" (2010)

Stop-motion takes over Greendale for twenty-two minutes, and somehow it's one of the saddest things Community ever filmed. Abed's Christmas breakdown gets treated like a real psychological case, with the study group literally entering his mind to figure out why he sees the world in claymation. Underneath the rubber-hose animation is a genuine question about why some people need the holidays to mean something. The show answers it without ever dropping the bit. | © NBC
The One With the Holiday Armadillo

5. Friends — "The One with the Holiday Armadillo" (2000)

An armadillo costume was the only thing left at the store, so that's how Ross ends up explaining Hanukkah dressed as a giant armored rodent. Then Chandler shows up as Santa, and Joey crashes in full Superman gear because why not. The whole thing should collapse under its own absurdity, but Ben just wants to hear about the gelt. Friends turns a scheduling mess into one of its weirdest, warmest bits, and "Happy Armadillo Day" still gets quoted for a reason. | © NBC
The Office 22 Christmas Party22

4. The Office — "Christmas Party" (2005)

Secret Santa rules exist for a reason, and Michael Scott breaks every one of them. He swaps his cheap gift for an expensive one the moment Jim pulls out an iPod, then acts wounded when everyone calls him out on it. Phyllis dressed as Santa, Meredith's eggnog, Angela's seating chart for Jesus's birthday, it all piles into one of the show's most quietly chaotic hours. The Office never needed a big twist to make Christmas funny, just a room full of people who can't let anything go. | © NBC
The Simpsons 22 Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire22

3. The Simpsons — "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire" (1989)

Homer Simpson has exactly $13 and no Christmas bonus, so he takes a second job as a mall Santa to cover presents. The job barely pays, the tips are worse, and a trip to the dog track leaves him walking home with a failed racing greyhound instead of cash. Marge frosts her hair green to afford gifts, which somehow feels like less of a disaster than the dog. The episode that started the entire show still holds up as the most sincere thing The Simpsons ever did with Christmas. | © Fox
Seinfeld 22 The Strike22

2. Seinfeld — "The Strike" (1997)

Frank Costanza invented a holiday to avoid the commercialism of Christmas, and somehow it stuck. Festivus comes with an unadorned pole, feats of strength, and an airing of grievances that gets more uncomfortable with every name on the list. George only brings it up because it gets him out of donating to a fake charity. Decades later, people still put up poles in December because of a plot device meant to be a joke. | © NBC
I Love Lucy 22 The I Love Lucy Christmas Show22

1. I Love Lucy — "The I Love Lucy Christmas Show" (1956)

Lucille Ball was visibly pregnant again by the time this one aired, so the writers built an entire episode out of old footage instead of a new story. Lucy and Ricky sit by the fire, watching clips of Little Ricky's first years play out like a home movie. There's no new plot, no fresh jokes, just a family looking back at itself. It was a budget-saving shortcut that turned into the warmest thing the show ever put on screen. | © CBS
