15. The Proposal (2009)
Sandra Bullock plays a boss so terrifying her assistant would rather marry her than get deported. The Proposal gets its laughs from forced proximity, Betty White's unhinged energy, and Ryan Reynolds slowly losing his composure. The Alaska setting does a lot of quiet work, turning a fake engagement into something that actually sticks. By the time the wedding almost happens, you're rooting for it to. | © Walt Disney Studios
14. The Princess Bride (1987)
A grandfather reading to his sick grandson should not work as a framing device, but The Princess Bride makes it the whole point. Sword fights, giants, and true love get delivered with a wink, never once talking down to the fairy tale it's telling. Andre the Giant and Mandy Patinkin bring real weight to what could've stayed a joke. Few movies manage to be this funny and this sincere in the same breath. | © 20th Century Studios
13. Chef (2014)
Carl Casper loses his restaurant job and finds himself again behind the wheel of a food truck. Chef spends as much time on Cubano sandwiches as it does on fatherhood, and somehow both feel equally urgent. Jon Favreau directs and stars, clearly more interested in grilled cheese technique than plot mechanics. It's a movie that makes you hungry and a little wistful at the same time. | © Open Road Films
12. Practical Magic (1998)
Two witch sisters, a cursed bloodline, and a Massachusetts house full of candles and dried herbs. That's the setup Practical Magic runs with, leaning hard into autumn light and sisterly bickering instead of horror. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman carry the whole thing on chemistry alone, making the magic feel almost beside the point. The margarita scene alone is worth returning for every October. | © Warner Bros.
11. Mamma Mia! (2008)
Nobody asked for ABBA songs to carry a plot about a wedding and three possible fathers, and yet here we are. Mamma Mia! throws Meryl Streep onto a Greek hillside and lets her sing like she's got nothing to lose. The island setting alone makes winter feel very far away. It's loud, silly, and completely unbothered by its own ridiculousness. | © Universal Pictures
10. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)
A man who daydreams his whole life away finally gets a reason to stop. That's the setup for The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and it turns a missing photo negative into an excuse for glaciers, skateboards, and a longboard ride down an Icelandic highway. Ben Stiller plays Walter as someone who's spent years editing his own life down to nothing. Watching him finally step into the frame feels like permission to do the same. | © 20th Century Fox
9. About Time (2013)
Time travel in About Time isn't used for anything flashy. No one stops an assassination or fixes history, they just get to relive dinners, arguments, and ordinary Tuesdays a little more carefully. Domhnall Gleeson's character eventually stops rewinding altogether, because he realizes the trick was never the time travel. It was paying attention the first time around. | © Universal Pictures
8. Notting Hill (1999)
Hugh Grant runs a travel bookshop in Notting Hill, the kind that seems to exist only in movies and maybe one real street in London. Julia Roberts walks in as the most famous actress in the world, and somehow the film never lets that fact overpower the two people figuring out if they actually like each other. The walk through the market, season changing with every step, says more than the dialogue does. Some romances age because they're clever, this one ages because it's patient. | © Universal Pictures
7. The Intern (2015)
Robert De Niro plays a 70-year-old intern at a fashion startup in The Intern, and the joke writes itself until the movie decides not to make it. Instead it becomes a quiet case for slowing down and actually listening to people. Anne Hathaway's character, drowning in a company she built too fast, finds something steadying in a coworker who isn't trying to prove anything. It's a workplace movie that argues experience and youth aren't actually at war. | © Warner Bros. Pictures
6. Julie & Julia (2009)
Two women separated by fifty years both find themselves saved by butter and determination in Julie & Julia. Meryl Streep's Julia Child fumbles through a Paris kitchen with the kind of joy that makes mistakes look like part of the plan. Amy Adams, blogging her way through the same recipes decades later, finds the same thing waiting on the other side of failure. Few films make boeuf bourguignon feel like an act of self-discovery. | © Sony Pictures
5. When Harry Met Sally... (1989)
Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan spend twelve years proving friendship and romance don't follow a schedule. The diner scene gets quoted so often people forget how much quiet conversation surrounds it, years of walks through Central Park and late night phone calls about nothing. When Harry Met Sally... trusts that falling in love can look like talking for a decade before anyone admits it. New Year's Eve has never felt like such a fair deadline. | © Sony Pictures
4. Paddington 2 (2017)
Prison movies do not usually involve marmalade sandwiches, but Paddington ends up running the kitchen anyway. Paddington 2 takes a small bear with impeccable manners and puts him through a heist plot, a wrongful conviction, and a prison softened by his sheer decency. Hugh Grant plays a vain actor villain with the kind of commitment that makes the whole thing funnier. By the end even the toughest inmate is tending a garden because kindness, it turns out, is contagious. | © Warner Bros. Pictures
3. Little Women (2019)
Four sisters crammed into one house during a cold Massachusetts winter shouldn't feel this comforting, yet Little Women makes the chaos look like something worth missing. Greta Gerwig cuts between past and present so the warmth of childhood keeps bleeding into the ache of growing up. Saoirse Ronan's Jo spends the whole film resisting the ending everyone expects of her. It's a story about sisters that somehow makes solitude look like its own kind of victory. | © Sony Pictures
2. You've Got Mail (1998)
An email inbox used to feel like a small miracle, and You've Got Mail remembers exactly why. Meg Ryan runs a tiny bookshop, Tom Hanks runs the chain store putting her out of business, and neither one knows the other behind the screen name. Their anonymous messages carry more honesty than their face to face arguments ever do. Autumn in New York has rarely looked this good or felt this much like a second chance. | © Warner Bros. Pictures
1. The Holiday (2006)
Two women swap houses across an ocean and somehow swap their entire lives in the process. The Holiday pairs Kate Winslet's cozy English cottage against Cameron Diaz's glass box in Los Angeles, and both women find exactly what the other was missing. Jack Black and Jude Law show up to make sure neither swap stays simple for long. It's a movie built for the shortest days of the year, when starting over sounds like the best idea in the world. | © Sony PicturesWhen the sun sets before dinner, a warm and easy movie goes a long way.
